Vuelta a Espana - Stage 11
Imladrik
Back up to the mountains! We’re halfway to the race, and once again in the surroundings of Valencia. Today’s stage begins at the foot of Onda’s castle, and will bring the riders up to the Mas de la Costa, at the border between the communities of Aragon and Valencia.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2022/Reports/GTM/Vuelta%20a%20Espana/S11/20230122173520_1.jpg

After a flat first half, the riders will have to tackle two category 3 and two category 2 climbs, before ending on a category 1 finish, all of that with 177 km of race.
So yes, with an uphill finish, it has to be a battle of the GC favorites, isn’t it? Or maybe the break will make it to the end.
Well, we’ll find soon enough.

With 30 km done, the peloton didn’t really let go for now:
– A group of 6 is leading the race: the mountain classification leader, pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2022/Micros/pum.png Schinnagel was the first to attack. He’s accompanied by pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2022/Micros/pol.png Malori, pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2022/Micros/yor.png Suter (32nd, 6 points), pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2022/Micros/evo.png Khodayari, pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2022/Micros/lph.png Sterbini and pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2022/Micros/p4e.png Tanovitchii (37th, 4 points).
– 28 seconds behind, we have a group of 14! pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2022/Micros/grm.png Lastra, pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2022/Micros/akm.png Bravo (50th, 2 points), pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2022/Micros/iso.png Jaramillo, pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2022/Micros/kng.png Chiu, pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2022/Micros/eav.png Munton, pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2022/Micros/pum.png Cemazar, pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2022/Micros/zpc.png Carr, pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2022/Micros/afr.png Main, pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2022/Micros/ela.png Kastrantas (18th, 12 points), pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2022/Micros/p4e.png Gladysh (19th, 12 points), Topchanyuk (6th, 23 points), pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2022/Micros/evo.png Gavars, pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2022/Micros/lph.png Lopez Nolasco (49th, 2 points) and pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2022/Micros/ubs.png Natarov.
– 35 seconds late, the peloton, with the sprinters at the front.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2022/Reports/GTM/Vuelta%20a%20Espana/S11/20230122174618_1.jpg

The peloton nearly caught the 20 escapists, but they gave another push, and the peloton cut the chase.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2022/Reports/GTM/Vuelta%20a%20Espana/S11/20230122174845_1.jpg

130 km to go, and the gap is going back up, at one minute for the moment.

Nothings happens during the 50 next kilometers, and we are halfway to the race, as the climbing begins with the Puerto de Marianet (cat. 3, 3,6 km, 5,7%).

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2022/Reports/GTM/Vuelta%20a%20Espana/S11/20230122175252_1.jpg

The gap is close to 6 minutes, with Aegon, Duolingo, De Stilj, Huski and Gazelle working.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2022/Micros/eav.png Munton is the first to attack!

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2022/Reports/GTM/Vuelta%20a%20Espana/S11/20230122175408_1.jpg

He’s able to hold on and to take the 6 points, ahead of pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2022/Micros/p4e.png Topchanyuk and pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2022/Micros/pum.png Schinnagel.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2022/Reports/GTM/Vuelta%20a%20Espana/S11/20230122175448_1.jpg

The next climb, the Puerto de Eslida (cat. 2, 5km, 5,8%), in 4 kilometers, in the Serra d'Espadà Natural Park.
pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2022/Micros/lph.png Sterbini is already dropped from the breakaway.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2022/Micros/ela.png Kastrantas is the next to accelerate, in the last 2 km of the climb.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2022/Reports/GTM/Vuelta%20a%20Espana/S11/20230122175718_1.jpg

But it’s pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2022/Micros/grm.png Lastra who takes 10 points, next the Greek champion, pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2022/Micros/afr.png Main, pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2022/Micros/eav.png Munton and pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2022/Micros/pum.png Schinnagel, who’s probably happy to see the points so spread out.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2022/Reports/GTM/Vuelta%20a%20Espana/S11/20230122175756_1.jpg

The next climb begins right after, it’s the Puerto de Ain (cat. 3, 5,8 km, 4,4%). The gap to the pack is 6’ and Moser is working in the pack, which probably means that Kudus feels well.
pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2022/Micros/yor.png Suter, pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2022/Micros/evo.png Gavars and pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2022/Micros/pol.png Malori are dropped from the break. The former might make it back, though.

Once again, pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2022/Micros/ela.png Kastrantas is the first to accelerate, but the 6 points are for the white-and-blue jersey, pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2022/Micros/pum.png Schinnagel. pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2022/Micros/eav.png Munton is third.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2022/Reports/GTM/Vuelta%20a%20Espana/S11/20230122180238_1.jpg

The German is 38 points clear on the Greek. 26 left to take in the stage, 16 being at the finish.
It’ll be another of these days for pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2022/Micros/p4e.png Lutsyshyn, who is dropped from the pack.

No sprint in Onda (yes, the same town where the race began). With 48 km to go, the leaders still have a 6 minutes gap. pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2022/Micros/lph.png Munoz seems in a very bad shape, he’s at the back of a 17 men group, 1’45 behind the peloton.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2022/Reports/GTM/Vuelta%20a%20Espana/S11/20230122180649_1.jpg

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2022/Micros/yor.png Suter and pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2022/Micros/pol.png Malori are once again dropped from the break. They won’t make it back, this time.

The leaders begin the Puerto del Salto (cat. 2, 7,8 km, 5,9%). Aegon is strong at the head of the pack.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2022/Reports/GTM/Vuelta%20a%20Espana/S11/20230122181030_1.jpg

There are 30 km left to ride.

Feeling that pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2022/Micros/pum.png Schinnagel isn’t in a great position, pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2022/Micros/ela.png Kastrantas attacks!

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2022/Reports/GTM/Vuelta%20a%20Espana/S11/20230122181150_1.jpg

This time, nobody can catch him.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2022/Reports/GTM/Vuelta%20a%20Espana/S11/20230122181239_1.jpg

The remaining points are for pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2022/Micros/iso.png Jaramillo, pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2022/Micros/kng.png Chiu, Schinnagel and pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2022/Micros/p4e.png Topchanyuk.
pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2022/Micros/akm.png Bravo, pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2022/Micros/p4e.png Gladysh, pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2022/Micros/evo.png Gavars, pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2022/Micros/p4e.png Tanovitchii and pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2022/Micros/pum.png Cemazar are dropped.

The peloton is down to 104 men, with pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2022/Micros/tti.png Kanerva the most notable to be dropped. Munoz’ group is down 7 minutes to the leaders.

And pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2022/Micros/ela.png Chiarello goes for stage glory and attacks!

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2022/Reports/GTM/Vuelta%20a%20Espana/S11/20230122181632_1.jpg

It leads nowhere, but the pack loses 14 more riders, pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2022/Micros/dsc.png Bettiol and pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2022/Micros/p4e.png Spilak being the best of them.

10 km to go for the leaders, who have one minute on the chasing 5 and 3’40 on the favorites. The final climb begins in 6,5 km.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2022/Reports/GTM/Vuelta%20a%20Espana/S11/20230122182006_1.jpg

Isostar, Huski and Duolingo lead the chase.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2022/Reports/GTM/Vuelta%20a%20Espana/S11/20230122182116_1.jpg

5 km to go and the gap is still 4 minutes. The last climb is 3,5 km long, with an average slope of 12,2%!

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2022/Reports/GTM/Vuelta%20a%20Espana/S11/20230122182229_2.jpg

Yeah, I can already tell you it’s terrible.

2,5 km to go. pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2022/Micros/p4e.png Topchanyuk, pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2022/Micros/evo.png Khodayari, pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2022/Micros/zpc.png Carr, pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2022/Micros/kng.png Chiu and pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2022/Micros/ela.png Kastrantas have a gap.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2022/Reports/GTM/Vuelta%20a%20Espana/S11/20230122182331_1.jpg

1,5 km to go. pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2022/Micros/evo.png Khodayari has 14 seconds on 11 survivors of the break. Schinnagel made it back once again!

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2022/Reports/GTM/Vuelta%20a%20Espana/S11/20230122182524_1.jpg

The peloton begins to climb.

Flamme rouge! The gap is up to 22 seconds. The slopes are a bit easier at the end.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2022/Reports/GTM/Vuelta%20a%20Espana/S11/20230122182704_1.jpg

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2022/Micros/ela.png Kastrantas is being dropped.

500 m for pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2022/Micros/evo.png Khodayari. Will he succeed where Vosekalns couldn’t? He’s 200 m ahead of the others.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2022/Reports/GTM/Vuelta%20a%20Espana/S11/20230122182820_1.jpg

No attacks in the favorites’ group for now. They are in slopes near to 20%!

Meanwhile, 200 m to ride for pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2022/Micros/evo.png Khodayari. That should be it!

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2022/Reports/GTM/Vuelta%20a%20Espana/S11/20230122183033_1.jpg

And yes, another great victory from the break! Schinnagel comes in 2nd and strengthen his best climber jersey with another amazing stage.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2022/Reports/GTM/Vuelta%20a%20Espana/S11/20230122183107_1.jpg

Last kilometer for the pack, with pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2022/Micros/mos.png Kudus, pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2022/Micros/hsk.png Tolhoek and pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2022/Micros/gzl.png Dombrowski at his head.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2022/Reports/GTM/Vuelta%20a%20Espana/S11/20230122183238_1.jpg

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2022/Micros/iso.png Jaramillo is 3rd, pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2022/Micros/zpc.png Carr 4th, pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2022/Micros/p4e.png Tanovitchii 5th, pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2022/Micros/p4e.png Topchanyuk 6th.

In the peloton, nobody wants to go, with 700 m left to climb.
One has to wait the last 300 m to see Kudus and Dombrowski launch their sprint!

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2022/Reports/GTM/Vuelta%20a%20Espana/S11/20230122183445_1.jpg

And it’s the red jersey who’s best of the pack, showing his autority.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2022/Reports/GTM/Vuelta%20a%20Espana/S11/20230122183504_1.jpg

Kudus is 15th, Yates 16th.

In the GC, Eastman comes back in 3rd. He’s in the same time as Formolo.
Kudus is now 7th, but still 2’30 behind Dombrowski.
The Puma duo of Schinnagel and Zwiehoff still leads the mountain classification. Schinnagel as even furthered is advance by 8 points.
Kastrantas is 5th.
Higuita is still well in white.
In the team competition, Isostar is now only 2 seconds down to Gazelle.

Well, today certainly wasn’t the battle we thought, but still an exciting stage following the breakaway feats. Tomorrow should be calmer.
But, you know. We’ll see there.
