Here it is! Today’s stage is the longest of the 2022 Vuelta a Espana. It surely is not the hardest, but four category 3 climbs are a bit more difficult when you had one week of racing and put them in 202 long kilometers.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2022/Reports/GTM/Vuelta%20a%20Espana/S10/20230122161417_1.jpg

It should be a calm day for the favorites – until the last climb, at least. Guys like pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2022/Micros/mos.png Kudus and pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2022/Micros/aeg.png Olivier have to continue their climbing through the GC – or to keep their leg for the big third week.

Only 24 mountains points to take, so pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2022/Micros/pum.png Schinnagel should be safe one more day, but what do I know?

The stage begins in Aragon, already above 1000 m, and will head north-east to the Comunitat Valenciana. Before the race begins, you have to enjoy the magnificient Mora de Rubielos and its historical heritage.

The first climb (cat. 3, 15 km, 4,7%] begins only 10 km after the departure, so the breakaway candidates will have to be fast.

And we’re in, with the breakaway still forming.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2022/Reports/GTM/Vuelta%20a%20Espana/S10/20230122162044_1.jpg

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2022/Micros/grm.png Hulgaard (36th, 4 points for the mountain classification) and pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2022/Micros/eav.png Rutsch open the road.
pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2022/Micros/ubs.png Reichenbach and pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2022/Micros/ela.png Kelly are 300 m behind.
Then there is a group of seven: pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2022/Micros/tti.png Trakhov, pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2022/Micros/lph.png Beltran, pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2022/Micros/iso.png Sweeny (38th, 4 points), pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2022/Micros/eav.png Munton, pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2022/Micros/afr.png Munyaneza (22nd, 10 points), pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2022/Micros/ela.png Morin and pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2022/Micros/pum.png Egger. They are 48 seconds behind the leaders.
pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2022/Micros/pum.png Zwiehoff (4th, 28 points), pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2022/Micros/ela.png Delco and pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2022/Micros/yor.png Romo (21st, 10 points) are a minute behind the leaders.
The pack is one more minute behind, with Huski, Duolingo, Aker, Gazelle, Evonik, Polar and King Power working.

The attacks are still coming, though. The 14 previsously named are together 10 km from the top.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2022/Reports/GTM/Vuelta%20a%20Espana/S10/20230122162652_1.jpg

They are joined by a group of 5: pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2022/Micros/ubs.png Abreu, pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2022/Micros/eav.png Geniets, pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2022/Micros/grm.png Rosskopf (35th, 4 points), pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2022/Micros/ela.png Kastrantas and pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2022/Micros/lph.png Lopez Nolasco (45th, 2 points).
Zwiehoff is the best placed GC wise (32nd, +10’13).

The peloton is 1’30 behind.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2022/Micros/ela.png Kastrantas is the first to accelerate, 1 km from the top.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2022/Reports/GTM/Vuelta%20a%20Espana/S10/20230122163012_1.jpg

He takes his first 6 points, ahead of his teammate Morin, and of pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2022/Micros/tti.png Trakhov. Now it’s downhill for 6 km, and then the Puerto de Linares (5,9 km, 7,1%). Despite it being a category 3 climb, we are above the 1600 m line…
The gap with the peloton is 4’30, as it reaches the first summit.

This time, it’s pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2022/Micros/lph.png Lopez Nolasco who is the first to attack, 1200 m before the summit.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2022/Reports/GTM/Vuelta%20a%20Espana/S10/20230122163110_1.jpg

He’s easily beaten by pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2022/Micros/tti.png Trakhov, pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2022/Micros/pum.png Zwiehoff and pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2022/Micros/pum.png Egger.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2022/Reports/GTM/Vuelta%20a%20Espana/S10/20230122163522_1.jpg

6 riders were dropped by the acceleration, but they should be able to make it back.

Now it’s 120 km of bumps before the next categorized climbs.

150 km to go and pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2022/Micros/grm.png Hulgaard is still alone, 40 seconds behind the front 13. After him, pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2022/Micros/eav.png Rutsch, Munton, pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2022/Micros/ela.png Kelly, Morin and Delco don’t seem able to catch him either.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2022/Reports/GTM/Vuelta%20a%20Espana/S10/20230122163552_1.jpg

10 km later, the 19 are together in the end at the front. The gap with the peloton is 3’21. Delco is barely hanging up at the back of the break.

80 km to go, and the peloton clearly has accelerated, with Husky and Aker working hard. The gap is down to 1’50.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2022/Reports/GTM/Vuelta%20a%20Espana/S10/20230122164523_1.jpg

No sprint in Cati. The peloton can be seen, 1 km behind the leaders.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2022/Reports/GTM/Vuelta%20a%20Espana/S10/20230122164756_1.jpg

Feeling the peloton on their tail, pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2022/Micros/yor.png Romo, pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2022/Micros/afr.png Munyaneza, pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2022/Micros/iso.png Sweeny and pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2022/Micros/tti.png Trakhov attack. T he Puerto de Culla (14 km, 3,9%) begins in 5 km.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2022/Reports/GTM/Vuelta%20a%20Espana/S10/20230122165012_1.jpg

They are caigjt wotj 9 km left to climb, but Trakhov and Sweeny accelerate again!

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2022/Reports/GTM/Vuelta%20a%20Espana/S10/20230122165203_1.jpg

We have our first dropped in the pack: pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2022/Micros/lph.png Sterbini, pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2022/Micros/mol.png Dina (who worked hard in the front to control the race), pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2022/Micros/p4e.png Lutsyshyn and Redecker.

The remains of the breakaway are scattered, with pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2022/Micros/ela.png Kastrantas, pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2022/Micros/grm.png Rosskopf and pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2022/Micros/tti.png Trakhov leading.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2022/Reports/GTM/Vuelta%20a%20Espana/S10/20230122165434_1.jpg

It’s the Greek champion who taks the 6 points. Behind, pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2022/Micros/pum.png Zwiehoff and pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2022/Micros/eav.png Geniets make a huge come back to take 2nd and 3rd.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2022/Reports/GTM/Vuelta%20a%20Espana/S10/20230122165641_1.jpg

The peloton is down to 133 men as the sprinters have been dropped. Also, pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2022/Micros/grm.png Vingegaard.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2022/Reports/GTM/Vuelta%20a%20Espana/S10/20230122165847_1.jpg

The peloton is stretched, and that won’t get better in the last 23 km.

20 km to go, and there are 3 men up the road:

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2022/Reports/GTM/Vuelta%20a%20Espana/S10/20230122170225_1.jpg

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2022/Micros/pum.png Zwiehoff
pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2022/Micros/ela.png Kastrantas on his tail
pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2022/Micros/ubs.png Abreu, 16 seconds behind
The 77 men peloton is 30 seconds behind, and a group of 32 with pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2022/Micros/p4e.png Spilak, pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2022/Micros/isa.png Parra Bustamente, pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2022/Micros/pum.png Schinnagel and pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2022/Micros/hsk.png Tolhoek, 1 minute from the leader.

With 10 km to go, the last climb (5,5 km, 5,9%) comes soon. Zwiehoff and Kastrantas are together. The red jersey group is 30 seconds behind them.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2022/Reports/GTM/Vuelta%20a%20Espana/S10/20230122170416_1.jpg

6 km to go and Kastrantas gives it a last go!

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2022/Reports/GTM/Vuelta%20a%20Espana/S10/20230122170527_1.jpg

The two leaders are spent, but so are the domestiques in the pack! pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2022/Micros/akm.png Preidler and pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2022/Micros/evo.png Blums feel like it’s the right moment to attack.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2022/Reports/GTM/Vuelta%20a%20Espana/S10/20230122170702_1.jpg

3 km to go and they have a 20’’ gap, after having easily overcome the break. pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2022/Micros/gzl.png Tratnik, pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2022/Micros/eav.png Geniets and pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2022/Micros/pol.png Barthe lead the chase.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2022/Reports/GTM/Vuelta%20a%20Espana/S10/20230122170817_1.jpg

2 km. pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2022/Micros/evo.png Blums is caught, pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2022/Micros/akm.png Preidler still has a short lead.
pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2022/Micros/kng.png Sosa (2nd young rider, +0’50) is in a bad position. pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2022/Micros/mol.png Inkelaar is even further back.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2022/Reports/GTM/Vuelta%20a%20Espana/S10/20230122171022_1.jpg

Red kite! Preidler will soon be caught.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2022/Reports/GTM/Vuelta%20a%20Espana/S10/20230122171412_1.jpg

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2022/Micros/iso.png Higuita (5th GC), Sosa (10th), pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2022/Micros/mos.png Warchol (15th) are dropped. With Inkelaar, pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2022/Micros/zpc.png Lopez and pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2022/Micros/evo.png Vosekalns, there are those of the top 20 who are not in the red jersey’s group.
pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2022/Micros/pum.png Schinnagel made it back.

800 m. Tratnik leads the red jersey uphill.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2022/Reports/GTM/Vuelta%20a%20Espana/S10/20230122171452_1.jpg

500 m. pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2022/Micros/dsc.png Yates tries his luck. The last hundred meters are the hardest.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2022/Reports/GTM/Vuelta%20a%20Espana/S10/20230122171542_1.jpg

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2022/Micros/aeg.png Olivier seems to be dropped.

300 m. Yates has a lead.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2022/Reports/GTM/Vuelta%20a%20Espana/S10/20230122171643_1.jpg

100 m. Nobody is able or wants to contest Yates the 2nd victory in a row.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2022/Reports/GTM/Vuelta%20a%20Espana/S10/20230122171732_1.jpg

And yes, he does it again!

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2022/Reports/GTM/Vuelta%20a%20Espana/S10/20230122171833_1.jpg

Great victory for Yates, who will take 8 more seconds to Dombrowski, 2nd of the day.

We have to wait for the photofinish to have a confirmation, but yes, Eastman is 3rd. Formolo is 4th.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2022/Reports/GTM/Vuelta%20a%20Espana/S10/20230122171858_1.jpg

Kudus has a slightly better margin against Tratnik. The Eritrean has found back is legs. Chiarello is 7th.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2022/Reports/GTM/Vuelta%20a%20Espana/S10/20230122171945_1.jpg

Bongiorno storms in 8th.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2022/Reports/GTM/Vuelta%20a%20Espana/S10/20230122172050_1.jpg

Schelling and Carthy rounds the top 10.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2022/Reports/GTM/Vuelta%20a%20Espana/S10/20230122172132_1.jpg

Yates is given a 4’’ gap, and Dombrowski 5’’. The duo strengthen his advance.
Godoy, Latour and Olivier lose 33’’. Higuita loses 1’50.

In the GC, Dombrowski’s lead on Yates is down to 11’’, but it’s over one minute on the rest of the top 7? Kudus is 2 minutes down, but is in the top 10 again.
Higuita loses 6 places and is 11th.
Dombrowski is now 4th in the point competition. Yates 8th.
Zwiehof climbs up to 2nd in the mountain classification.
The leading trio for the young rider competition remains the same.
And Gazelle is back as the best team.

What an eventful day! And we’ll have another uphill finish tomorrow. So yes, tomorrow should also be exciting. See you there.
