Vuelta a Espana - Stage 9
Imladrik
Ongi etorri Euskal Herrira! We’re in the Basque country, in Irun, on the gasconian gulf and on the french border, for the 9th stage of the Vuelta a Espana. No crossing today, as we’ll head south-east, to Arrate.

Climbing comes back! Two category 3 and two category 2 summit, including an uphill finish, await the riders today.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2022/Reports/GTM/Vuelta%20a%20Espana/S9/20230121193829_1.jpg

Two favorites lost time two days ago in the Tourmalet: pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2022/Micros/mos.png Kudus and pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2022/Micros/aeg.png Olivier. Today could be a good day to begin their chase to a higher GC position.
But surely, the leading trio, and first of all the red jersey pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2022/Micros/gzl.png Dombrowski, does not intend to let them do it.
The battle for the white jersey is quite similar, only we really only have three contenders, as pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2022/Micros/zpc.png Lopez will probably not repeat his breakaway feat too soon. pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2022/Micros/kng.png Sosa and pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2022/Micros/mol.png Inkelaar didn’t have their best legs the other day, but surely they didn’t say their last word.
Last but not least, with 32 points to take in the mountain competition today, pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2022/Micros/pum.png Schinnagel might have work to do to keep his white and blue jersey and to continue a nice series of result for Puma.

We catch the race with 23 km done , and the peloton seems to have settled for a breakaway of 6 with pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2022/Micros/p4e.png Gladysh, pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2022/Micros/tti.png Trakhov, pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2022/Micros/yor.png Romo, pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2022/Micros/akm.png Vangstad, Bravo and pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2022/Micros/afr.png Visser.
Only Romo and Gladysh already have best climber points, and it’s 10 each, so Schinnagel didn’t bother. Surely coming days are more of interest to him.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2022/Reports/GTM/Vuelta%20a%20Espana/S9/20230121195054_1.jpg

These 6 only have 1 minute or so on the peloton, as other teams still try to be in the breakaway.
Speaking of that, pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2022/Micros/afr.png Gebrezgabihier, pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2022/Micros/p4e.png Tanovitchii and pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2022/Micros/lph.png Lopez Nolasco were authorized to go too.
De Stijl, Huski, Aegon, EA Vesuvio, UBS and King Power are the teams controlling right now.

115 km to go, it’s raining again, and the 9 leaders are together, with a 2’20 lead on the peloton.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2022/Reports/GTM/Vuelta%20a%20Espana/S9/20230121195508_1.jpg

It will now be more or less uphill to the mountain sprint, in 24 km. The lead didn’t went over 2’30. But first, there is an intermediate sprint in Zumarraga… which interests nobody. Well, so be it. There are still 8 km to go for the summit, and gap is under the 2 minutes mark.

Aker and Popo4Ever are the first teams to accelerate, with 600 m to climb.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2022/Reports/GTM/Vuelta%20a%20Espana/S9/20230121200037_1.jpg

The points are for pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2022/Micros/akm.png Vangstad, pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2022/Micros/p4e.png Tanovitchii and Gladysh.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2022/Reports/GTM/Vuelta%20a%20Espana/S9/20230121200127_1.jpg

In the pack, Gazelle (and Moser) still keep it easy. It’s worth to note that the best climber jersey pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2022/Micros/pum.png Schinnagel and it’s runner-up pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2022/Micros/evo.png Vosekalns are with the favorites, near the front of the pack.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2022/Reports/GTM/Vuelta%20a%20Espana/S9/20230121200305_1.jpg

With 61 km to go, the gap is 1’40.

Not long after the first climb, the leaders begin the Alto de Karpaza (cat. 3, 9,7 km, 3,8%) with a 1’30 lead.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2022/Reports/GTM/Vuelta%20a%20Espana/S9/20230121200636_1.jpg

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2022/Micros/akm.png Bravo is quickly dropped, with the peloton not far.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2022/Micros/p4e.png Gladysh is the next to be dropped. The gap is under a minute.

1,4 km from the summit, it’s pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2022/Micros/yor.png Romo and pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2022/Micros/afr.png Visser who can’t follow pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2022/Micros/akm.png Vangstad’s acceleration.
The 6 points are for pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2022/Micros/afr.png Gebrezgabihier, though. Vangstad and pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2022/Micros/p4e.png Tanovitchii are next.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2022/Reports/GTM/Vuelta%20a%20Espana/S9/20230121201508_1.jpg

40 km to go and the break has exploded. Gebrezgabihier and Vangstad are alone, 40 seconds ahead of pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2022/Micros/lph.png Lopez Nolasco, 52’’ ahead of pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2022/Micros/tti.png Trakhov and Tanovitchii, who will be brought back by the peloton led by pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2022/Micros/aeg.png Denz, pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2022/Micros/eav.png Geniets and pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2022/Micros/dsc.png De Bod.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2022/Reports/GTM/Vuelta%20a%20Espana/S9/20230121201801_1.jpg

35 km to go – 17 flat, and then the two category 2 climbs, with a short descent in between.
In the pack, pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2022/Micros/lph.png Sterbini, pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2022/Micros/eav.png Munton, pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2022/Micros/aeg.png Kooistra, pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2022/Micros/afr.png Cisse and pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2022/Micros/p4e.png Lutsyshyn are dropped.

There are splits in the pack.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2022/Reports/GTM/Vuelta%20a%20Espana/S9/20230121202052_1.jpg

A warning only for now for pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2022/Micros/iso.png Higuita, pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2022/Micros/mos.png Kudus, pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2022/Micros/ela.png Chiarello and pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2022/Micros/mol.png Inkelaar, as it finally gets back together.

At the head of the race, pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2022/Micros/akm.png Vangstad dropped pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2022/Micros/afr.png Gebrezgabihier. The favorites are 48 seconds behind.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2022/Reports/GTM/Vuelta%20a%20Espana/S9/20230121202300_1.jpg

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2022/Micros/akm.png Vangstad is finally taken, and the peloton will begin the Alto de Karabieta (cat. 2, 4,9 km, 7,3%). All the favorites are near the front.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2022/Reports/GTM/Vuelta%20a%20Espana/S9/20230121202427_1.jpg

A group of 16 is dropped in the first slopes. The sprinters who are still in the main group will follow very soon.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2022/Reports/GTM/Vuelta%20a%20Espana/S9/20230121202633_1.jpg

1,8 km to the summit, and there are new splits in the peloton, with a group of nearly 150 riders who loses contact. pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2022/Micros/iso.png Chamorro, pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2022/Micros/pum.png Schinnagel and pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2022/Micros/evo.png Vosekalns are in this group.
pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2022/Micros/tti.png Kanerva is in between, trying to come back.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2022/Reports/GTM/Vuelta%20a%20Espana/S9/20230121203006_1.jpg

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2022/Micros/dsc.png Bettiol takes the 10 points at the top, without much competition. The leading group is down to 19. pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2022/Micros/aeg.png Carboni and pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2022/Micros/yor.png Williams have been dropped.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2022/Reports/GTM/Vuelta%20a%20Espana/S9/20230121203116_1.jpg

12,5 km to go, of which 6 are downhill. Of the Top 20 in the GC, pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2022/Micros/zpc.png Lopez, pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2022/Micros/isa.png Bongiorno, pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2022/Micros/evo.png Vosekalns, pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2022/Micros/zpc.png Burke and pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2022/Micros/p4e.png Spilak are not in the red jersey’s group.

6,6 km to go, and the descent is over. Betiiol has been leading the group since he took the KoM sprint.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2022/Reports/GTM/Vuelta%20a%20Espana/S9/20230121203636_1.jpg

5 km to go. No attack for the moment. pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2022/Micros/aeg.png Olivier is setting the pace.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2022/Reports/GTM/Vuelta%20a%20Espana/S9/20230121203740_1.jpg

3 km. Only Bettiol has been dropped and caught by the chasers.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2022/Reports/GTM/Vuelta%20a%20Espana/S9/20230121203837_1.jpg

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2022/Micros/kng.png Quita is dropped with 2 km to climb. Worth to note that the last kilometer is flat and downhill.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2022/Micros/eav.png Godoy and pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2022/Micros/dsc.png Yates attack at the red kite!

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2022/Reports/GTM/Vuelta%20a%20Espana/S9/20230121204056_1.jpg

800 m. They got a small gap and nobody is willing to go!

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2022/Reports/GTM/Vuelta%20a%20Espana/S9/20230121204146_1.jpg

600 m. Yates patiently waits in Godoy’s wheel.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2022/Reports/GTM/Vuelta%20a%20Espana/S9/20230121204208_1.jpg

Olivier leads the race behind them.

Yates begins his sprint with 400 m to go. He’s much faster.
Behind them, the red jersey pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2022/Micros/gzl.png Dombrowski begins his sprint.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2022/Reports/GTM/Vuelta%20a%20Espana/S9/20230121204321_1.jpg

200 m. Yates is still faster than Godoy, but he’s slowing.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2022/Reports/GTM/Vuelta%20a%20Espana/S9/20230121204427_1.jpg

100 m. Nothing stands in the way of the Brit.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2022/Reports/GTM/Vuelta%20a%20Espana/S9/20230121204502_1.jpg

In the back, pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2022/Micros/hsk.png Formolo is now the fastest, 400 m from the line.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2022/Reports/GTM/Vuelta%20a%20Espana/S9/20230121204531_1.jpg

And Yates can celebrate a strong victory! He and Godoy attacked at the right moment and thank their teammate with a very good result.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2022/Reports/GTM/Vuelta%20a%20Espana/S9/20230121204531_2.jpg

Formolo is third, best of the rest, ahead of Olivier and Dombrovski.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2022/Reports/GTM/Vuelta%20a%20Espana/S9/20230121204804_1.jpg

Sosa comes in 6th.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2022/Reports/GTM/Vuelta%20a%20Espana/S9/20230121204831_1.jpg

The Moser pair comes next, with Warchol first.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2022/Reports/GTM/Vuelta%20a%20Espana/S9/20230121204857_1.jpg

Then it’s Eastman, and Schelling to close the top 10.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2022/Reports/GTM/Vuelta%20a%20Espana/S9/20230121204914_1.jpg

Yates and Godoy are given an 11 seconds gap, which brings Yates only 23’’ on the red jersey. Formolo is 44 seconds down. Godoy wins two places and is now 7th.
Latour was dropped at the end and he loses 30 seconds and 3 places in the GC.
Inkelaar takes back the 3rd place for the young rider classification.
And thanks to a strong stage, Gazelle s back up at the 2nd place in the team classification, still 2’ down to Isostar.
