Vuelta a Espana - Stage 8
Imladrik
Hello everyone and welcome in Spain, most precisely in Ibi, for the second week of the 2022 Vuelta a Espana. I’m Imladrik and very happy to meet you here.
We’re on for a transition stage, which should see a hard fight between the maybe tiring sprinting teams and the breakaway, even though the escapist already had their moment to shine yesterday.
And if the final to Alicante is quite flat, even though there’s a nasty bump really close the finish line, the 144 first kilometers aren’t flat.
There are only 12 best climber and 40 best sprinters points to take today, so the classifications shouldn’t see much change. Transition stage, we said.

Organization favors the sprinters! Let’s see how that translates into facts. Will this be another amazing victory for pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2022/Micros/isa.png Degenkolb and ISA?

17 km are done, and we seem to have a breakaway satisfying the peloton. pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2022/Micros/afr.png Munyaneza, pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2022/Micros/kng.png Menten, pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2022/Micros/iso.png Sweeny and pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2022/Micros/akm.png Kamp are out. None has any mountain points, or does threaten any leader.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2022/Reports/GTM/Vuelta%20a%20Espana/S8/20230121154714_1.jpg

ISA, Tinkoff, MOL and Gazelle are at the head of the peloton to control the race.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2022/Reports/GTM/Vuelta%20a%20Espana/S8/20230121154804_1.jpg

The lead is 1’30.

With 140 km to go, the gap is up to three minutes and it’s raining again.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2022/Reports/GTM/Vuelta%20a%20Espana/S8/20230121155058_1.jpg

Hell of a spring.

The leaders arrive to Villena, which is still today the seat of a marquisate. Maybe the marquess is here to see the sprint! Anyway, yes, intermediate sprint incoming.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2022/Reports/GTM/Vuelta%20a%20Espana/S8/20230121155401_1.jpg

The lead is down to 1’52, and there will be only one point to take for the sprinters in the peloton. The escapists don’t sprint. I hope the marquess won’t be to disappointed.
The peloton, in the contrary, fight hard for the lone point! And at this exercice, it’s pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2022/Micros/mol.png Petit who’s the better.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2022/Reports/GTM/Vuelta%20a%20Espana/S8/20230121155438_1.jpg

It’s worth to note that we saw pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2022/Micros/p4e.png Lutsyshyn sprinting, which is good news after the first week he had. Let’s hope the Ukrainian is feeling better and will be able to make something of his team’s wildcard.
After everything settles down, we see the same team as earlier get back to work. The red jersey is attentive, close to the front.

78 km to go, and the gap is back up to 2 minutes. The peloton doesn’t intend to let this one go to the break, as the leaders will begin to ascend the Puerto de Biar (cat. 3, 6,5 km, 3,8%).

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2022/Reports/GTM/Vuelta%20a%20Espana/S8/20230121155730_1.jpg

The castle of Biar, that you can see on the left, was built by the Almohades, and was, after the Reconquista, at the border between the realms of Aragon and Castille.
In the climb, pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2022/Micros/kng.png Menten is the first to accelerate, 1 km from the top.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2022/Reports/GTM/Vuelta%20a%20Espana/S8/20230121155843_1.jpg

He can’t extend his effort till the end though, and it’s pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2022/Micros/afr.png Munyaneza who takes the 6 points. pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2022/Micros/iso.png Sweeny is 2nd.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2022/Reports/GTM/Vuelta%20a%20Espana/S8/20230121155935_1.jpg

The 2nd climb of the day comes not too long after. It’s the Puerto de Tibi (cat. 3, 4,3 km, 5,5%). If you are in the surroundings, go visit Tibi’s barrage, which was built in the 16th century.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2022/Reports/GTM/Vuelta%20a%20Espana/S8/20230121160158_1.jpg

This time, it’s pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2022/Micros/akm.png Kamp – and the pack in the back – who accelerates.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2022/Reports/GTM/Vuelta%20a%20Espana/S8/20230121160307_1.jpg

The Dane is a better puncher, so that works for him.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2022/Reports/GTM/Vuelta%20a%20Espana/S8/20230121160401_1.jpg

No, wait, forget what I said! I didn’t see well, it’s pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2022/Micros/afr.png Munyaneza again who’s here to take the points! Kamp is only 2nd, and pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2022/Micros/kng.png Menten 3rd.

We’re in the last 35 km now, and the gap is 1’30. There’s another bump halfway to the finish, but the rest is all downhill.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2022/Micros/isa.png Ferreyra leads a very stretched peloton.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2022/Reports/GTM/Vuelta%20a%20Espana/S8/20230121160557_1.jpg

Fast forward to the last 10 km, where pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2022/Micros/akm.png Kamp is leading a still resisting break. The gap is down to 30 seconds.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2022/Reports/GTM/Vuelta%20a%20Espana/S8/20230121160852_1.jpg

5 km later, and the catch will probably be made very soon. ISA is working hard to that end, with its train already set up.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2022/Reports/GTM/Vuelta%20a%20Espana/S8/20230121161124_1.jpg

3,5 km and it’s done in the streets of Alicante, the city which is the seat of The European Union Intellectual Property Office (EUIPO). Yes, that’s an acronym weirdly related to cycling. Anyway, we have to thank the four escapists for the show they made today, and their hard resistance, but now it’s time for the sprinters! And we now they’ve been waiting for today in the mountains the last few days.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2022/Reports/GTM/Vuelta%20a%20Espana/S8/20230121161217_1.jpg

2 km to go. Seems like pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2022/Micros/isa.png Sagiv put in a late attack in the small bump. He’s 8 seconds ahead of his teammates, Baska and Santos. Degenkolb is further back, already in the wind.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2022/Reports/GTM/Vuelta%20a%20Espana/S8/20230121161446_1.jpg

On his left, we have pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2022/Micros/dsc.png Bol, pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2022/Micros/tti.png Banaszek, pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2022/Micros/duo.png Van Stayen and the other sprinters.

At the flamme rouge, Sagiv still has a gap, with his team chasing. The sprinters are further back, with only pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2022/Micros/pum.png Steimle in Degenkolb’s wheel.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2022/Reports/GTM/Vuelta%20a%20Espana/S8/20230121161615_1.jpg

800 m. Sagiv cut his effort. Was it some elaborate tactic from ISA? Santos is leading out the green jersey at high speed. Steimle is well set in his wheel. The other sprinters are further back, the MOL rider at the front being pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2022/Micros/mol.png Moricz, while the Project: Africa rider is pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2022/Micros/afr.png Munyaneza.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2022/Reports/GTM/Vuelta%20a%20Espana/S8/20230121161850_1.jpg

600 m. Degenkolb is in the wind! Steimle tries to pass him on the right.
Behind, pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2022/Micros/mos.png Swift is in the wind and will be passed by pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2022/Micros/pol.png Philipsen and pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2022/Micros/lph.png Abdul Halil.
On the right, pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2022/Micros/duo.png Van Stayen and pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2022/Micros/tti.png Banaszek are slower. pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2022/Micros/ela.png Bouglas is boxed in.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2022/Reports/GTM/Vuelta%20a%20Espana/S8/20230121162050_1.jpg

400 m for Degenkolb. All the other sprinters are faster than him now.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2022/Reports/GTM/Vuelta%20a%20Espana/S8/20230121162138_1.jpg

200 m. The green jersey still has a small lead. Abdul Halil and Van Stayen are the fastest, 100 m behind.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2022/Reports/GTM/Vuelta%20a%20Espana/S8/20230121162253_1.jpg

100 m. Steimle seems unable to pass Degenkolb!

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2022/Reports/GTM/Vuelta%20a%20Espana/S8/20230121162337_1.jpg

And he doesn’t! Another victory for Degenkolb, what a beast, what an example of teamwork by ISA!

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2022/Reports/GTM/Vuelta%20a%20Espana/S8/20230121162503_1.jpg

Thanks to a very good positioning, Steimle is 2nd, which makes a good pair of days for Puma.

Swift finishes on the podium, ahead of Abdul Halil, Philipsen and Van Stayen.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2022/Reports/GTM/Vuelta%20a%20Espana/S8/20230121162520_1.jpg

Banaszek edges Bouglas for the 7th place.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2022/Reports/GTM/Vuelta%20a%20Espana/S8/20230121162550_1.jpg

Lutsychyn is 9th, which makes a first top 10 for him!

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2022/Reports/GTM/Vuelta%20a%20Espana/S8/20230121162625_1.jpg

And finally, Petit closes down the top 10, ahead of the other poor positioned sprinters. That will be a disappointment, for sure.

Well, you can’t really call that a mass sprint, but in the end, it was a sprinter stage! That will not be the same story tomorrow, so stay tuned!
