Vuelta a Espana - Stage 6
Imladrik
Welcome in Lodosa for the 6th stage of the 2022 Vuelta a Espana. After some mountains yesterday, the stage should be easier today, with the category 2 Alto de Oncala and the category 1 finish at La Laguna Negra de Viunesa.
We’re back a bit south of yesterday, in this area between Burgos and Saragossa we visited earlier this week.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2022/Reports/GTM/Vuelta%20a%20Espana/S6/20230117220853_1.jpg

As yesterday, we have the punchy climbers as the favorites – and so the GC favorites, with some outsiders. All should play in the last climb!

We catch the transmission with 20 km done. The break is scattered in the road for now:
– pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2022/Micros/eav.png Rutsch and pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2022/Micros/akm.png Bravo are leading the race;
– The mountain classification leader pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2022/Micros/zpc.png Stroll is 24 seconds behind them. He has pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2022/Micros/p4e.png Gladysh coming back at him, only 7’’ after;
– Then we have the peloton, 17 more seconds behind.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2022/Reports/GTM/Vuelta%20a%20Espana/S6/20230117221848_1.jpg

A small break, and we come back 15 km later. Things has changed a bit: pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2022/Micros/akm.png Bravo and pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2022/Micros/zpc.png Stroll have been caught, and the race is now lead by pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2022/Micros/p4e.png Topchanyuk, Gladysh, pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2022/Micros/pum.png Meiler and pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2022/Micros/yor.png Romo.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2022/Reports/GTM/Vuelta%20a%20Espana/S6/20230117222333_1.jpg

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2022/Micros/eav.png Rutsch is alone, 30’’ downhill. With good eyes, you could also see pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2022/Micros/evo.png Ansons coming out of the pack, 40’’ after the Vesuvio rider.

The official climb doesn’t start until 25 km, but the road is certainly not flat at the moment.

And 25 km later, the riders begin the Alto de Oncala (cat. 2, 11 km, 4,4%). Though we’re not as high as yesterday, we’re still above 1000 meters, in the commune of Soria, the second highest provincial capital of Spain!

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2022/Reports/GTM/Vuelta%20a%20Espana/S6/20230117222820_1.jpg

The four leaders have a 35’’ lead on Rutsch, himself 2 minutes ahead of the peloton. In the break, only Gladysh has mountain points (6 points, 8th).

Rutsch was close to coming back to the front group, but he was finally caught in the climb. Meanwhile, pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2022/Micros/yor.png Romo attacks the break 2 km from the summit.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2022/Reports/GTM/Vuelta%20a%20Espana/S6/20230117223108_1.jpg

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2022/Micros/pum.png Meiler leads the two Ukrainian rider to chase the Spanish. pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2022/Micros/p4e.png Topchanyuk can’t do better than 2nd, though, and Gladysh only takes 4 points.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2022/Reports/GTM/Vuelta%20a%20Espana/S6/20230117223145_1.jpg

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2022/Micros/kng.png Quita attacks the peloton to take 2 points. He’s now only 2 points behind Stroll in the best climber classification.
The gap is 1’40 with 90 km to go, and a sprint in the center of Soria in 30 km.

In the peloton, Huski, Tinkoff, King Power and Project: Africa are the main chasing teams.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2022/Reports/GTM/Vuelta%20a%20Espana/S6/20230117223345_1.jpg

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2022/Micros/yor.png Romo is on fire and he also takes the sprint. pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2022/Micros/p4e.png Topchanyuk and pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2022/Micros/pum.png Meiler follow.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2022/Reports/GTM/Vuelta%20a%20Espana/S6/20230117223821_1.jpg

Gladysh seems spent.

And when you’d thought that the two last points would go to pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2022/Micros/hsk.png Vader at the head of the peloton, pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2022/Micros/pum.png Steimle storms out and win them without any competition. I’m quite not sure that they we’re interesting enough to burn energy.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2022/Reports/GTM/Vuelta%20a%20Espana/S6/20230117224251_1.jpg

56 km to go, the lead is 2’30. The road ahead is a bit more flat, till the last 6 kilometers.

We make a small break and are back with 25 km to go, and a gap around 30 seconds.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2022/Reports/GTM/Vuelta%20a%20Espana/S6/20230117224629_1.jpg

The fast pace of the peloton bears splitting menace, though it stays together for now, as we’re crossing the Rio Revinuesa.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2022/Micros/pum.png Meiler and pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2022/Micros/yor.png Romo can stay ahead till the last 12 km, but then the catch is made. It’ll play between the favorites. There are still 6 km of flat road, and then the final category 1 climb (6,3 km, 6,9% up to 11%) to the finish line above the village of Vinuesa and the black lagoon.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2022/Reports/GTM/Vuelta%20a%20Espana/S6/20230117224911_1.jpg

As we hit the foot of the climb, the same team as before are setting the pace.
As we approach the 5 km line, pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2022/Micros/mos.png Kudus and pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2022/Micros/gzl.png Dombrowski are near the head of the race. The red jersey pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2022/Micros/pol.png Latour is further back.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2022/Reports/GTM/Vuelta%20a%20Espana/S6/20230117225151_1.jpg

3,5 km to go and the pack is still together, except for pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2022/Micros/hsk.png Vader and pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2022/Micros/afr.png Cisse who are dropped after a hard working day.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2022/Reports/GTM/Vuelta%20a%20Espana/S6/20230117225426_1.jpg

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2022/Micros/hsk.png Majka is setting the pace, closely followed by pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2022/Micros/kng.png Salazar. Behind them are pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2022/Micros/gzl.png Dombrowski, pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2022/Micros/hsk.png Formolo and pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2022/Micros/kng.png Quita.

Last kilometer! pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2022/Micros/gzl.png Dombrowski has been setting the pace for quite some time. He has pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2022/Micros/hsk.png Formolo, pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2022/Micros/mos.png Kudus and pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2022/Micros/dsc.png Bettiol behind him.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2022/Reports/GTM/Vuelta%20a%20Espana/S6/20230117225609_1.jpg

The hardest slopes begin now!

400 last meters, and Dombrowski is still leading. Formolo tries to pass him, but Kudus stays in the American’s wheel. The stage will play between these 3.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2022/Reports/GTM/Vuelta%20a%20Espana/S6/20230117225741_1.jpg

Stroll, who wears the best climber jersey, has been dropped. pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2022/Micros/evo.png Vosekalns is the main rider in his group.

200 m and still a tight fight. Dombrowski is a bit slower than the guys behind him, but he still leads.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2022/Reports/GTM/Vuelta%20a%20Espana/S6/20230117230023_1.jpg

100 m. Dombrowski and Formolo are quickly losing speed, while Kudus is still strong!

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2022/Reports/GTM/Vuelta%20a%20Espana/S6/20230117230206_1.jpg

Behind, pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2022/Micros/duo.png Eastman, pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2022/Micros/yor.png Carthy and pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2022/Micros/pol.png Latour accelerate!

And… it’s a great victory for Kudus! The race favorite already shows his strength!

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2022/Reports/GTM/Vuelta%20a%20Espana/S6/20230117230255_1.jpg

Dombrowski manages to fend off Formolo and to take the 2nd place. Still a good podium for Huski, who worked all day.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2022/Reports/GTM/Vuelta%20a%20Espana/S6/20230117230410_1.jpg

Carthy has half a wheel ahead of Eastman, who shows he’s a race favorite indeed.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2022/Reports/GTM/Vuelta%20a%20Espana/S6/20230117230500_1.jpg

The red jersey is 6th, Higuita 7th.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2022/Reports/GTM/Vuelta%20a%20Espana/S6/20230117230533_1.jpg

Olivier is 8th, Yates 9th, and Preidler closes the top 10.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2022/Reports/GTM/Vuelta%20a%20Espana/S6/20230117230609_1.jpg

The judges are quite generous with the gaps! Kudus is awarded a 5’’ gap, and 12’’ are given between the 5th and the 6th.
Due to bad placing, Munoz and Inkelaar lose up to 1’30 to the winner, even though the gaps didn’t seem that big…
So Ludus takes the GC lead with 5’’ over Dombrowski and 17’’ over Formolo. Nothing that can’t be taken back.
He also takes the mountain classification lead. Stroll will wear it on his behalf one more day.
Due to Inkelaar bad placing, it’s Sosa who now leads the young rider classification, in the same time as Higuita.
Gazelle is still leading the team competition.
