Tour of Missouri - Stage 4
niconico
It’s the longest and the toughest stage of the race today. We have Jason Donald in yellow so we should see Slipstream try to keep things together today as they are no doubt looking to win this race, which is very important to their sponsors. With riders sitting high up in the GC, Slipstream may expect to see some help from teams like Procycling, Nvidia, Zenmind and White Bear Steyr.

A big group of 11 riders went clear after about 50 kilometres. They were Mourey, Askari, Jacobs, Pfannberger, Esmaeli, Abdallah, Kirsch, Garcia Acosta, Lasri, Vingerling and Agudelo.

i285.photobucket.com/albums/ll76/A_Schleck/MG09/PCM0007-1.jpg

Meanwhile it was Slipstream and Dasani controlling the pack.

i285.photobucket.com/albums/ll76/A_Schleck/MG09/PCM0005.jpg

With 150 kilometres to go Agudelo and Vingerling went off the back of the breakaway group, so we now have 9 riders up front. There were two KoM Sprints today, but only 15 points up for grabs if a rider should win them both, so no matter what, Frischkorn would still be in the KoM Jersey on tomorrow’s penultimate stage. Esmaeli won the first and went second at the second, so he will be within touching distance of Frischkorn. Tomorrow’s stage is the last chance for any rider to take over the jersey though as there are no points to gather on the last stage.

Slipstream began upping the pace with just over 100 kilometres to go. At this point the advantage of the breakaway was about 8 minutes. But with only Bajadali, Frischkorn and Zirbel chasing this could prove difficult.

i285.photobucket.com/albums/ll76/A_Schleck/MG09/PCM0012-1.jpg

The increased pace got to a lot of riders as some large groups were dropped by the pack. The first big name in the GC to let go was Godfrey, who was sitting 9th in the GC before today. He is out of the GC picture.

i285.photobucket.com/albums/ll76/A_Schleck/MG09/PCM0015-1.jpg

Tyler Butterfield who was in 8th place before today also had to let go, he with over 70 kilometres left to race.

i285.photobucket.com/albums/ll76/A_Schleck/MG09/PCM0019-2.jpg

At this point the three riders chasing in the peloton had managed to cut the advantage to just below 6 minutes. 10 kilometres later and it was all over for Agudelo and Vingerling.

i285.photobucket.com/albums/ll76/A_Schleck/MG09/PCM0022-2.jpg

But then the advantage stopped coming down and with 55 kilometres to go the gap was static at 5’45. A few kilometres later and Abdallah couldn’t keep up with front anymore.

i285.photobucket.com/albums/ll76/A_Schleck/MG09/PCM0025-2.jpg

The gap then started going up again and at the last Points Sprint of the day, which was won by Pieter Jacobs, the gap was almost at 7 minutes.

i285.photobucket.com/albums/ll76/A_Schleck/MG09/PCM0026-1.jpg

Askari and Lasri couldn’t keep up after the sprint and a few kilometres later the Front 6 split up into two groups of 3 riders, with the front consisting of Pfannberger, Mourey and Garcia Acosta.

i285.photobucket.com/albums/ll76/A_Schleck/MG09/PCM0031.jpg

The chase was finally organized back in the pack but it seemed to be too late. The advantage was still more than 5 minutes with 25 kilometres to go.

i285.photobucket.com/albums/ll76/A_Schleck/MG09/PCM0033.jpg

Pfannberger was the best placed rider in the break, 2’27 off the lead, so maybe Slipstream still has a slight chance of keeping the lead. But they gotta haul.

i285.photobucket.com/albums/ll76/A_Schleck/MG09/PCM0035.jpg
The Front 3 on their way down the descend towards the finish line.

The three riders in front would fight it out for the win today and looking at the finale it was all about being the first rider to hit the bottom of the descend. If you did that, then you were definitely going to win. Mourey seems to have the advantage.

i285.photobucket.com/albums/ll76/A_Schleck/MG09/PCM0036.jpg

And he wins the stage! Pfannberg takes 2nd and Garcia Acosta is 3rd.

i285.photobucket.com/albums/ll76/A_Schleck/MG09/PCM0037.jpg

Pieter Jacobs leads the next group in at 1’27, to take 4th place.

i285.photobucket.com/albums/ll76/A_Schleck/MG09/PCM0038.jpg

Abdallah managed to catch up with Lasri and Askari as he takes 7th place, 3’44 after.

i285.photobucket.com/albums/ll76/A_Schleck/MG09/PCM0039.jpg

Maarten Tjallingii led in the pack at 4’18. That’s too late Pfannberger and a handful of the breakaway riders will move past Donald in the GC.
