The Pyrenees! (whose name I hope I’ll be able to write in English before the end of this race). The peloton leaves the flat for an already hard day, with an 183 km race, two category 2 climbs (the Alto de Vió and the Alto de Petralba), and the category 3 Alto de Fanto in between. After the last summit though, it’s 17 km of downhill and a flat finish.
Though the real climbing only begins after 100 km, these are certainly not flat either.
As one would expect, the favorites are (already) the best climbers and GC favorites, though organization seems to favor the punchier climbers over the pure climbers.
All the classifications except the green jersey should see a change of shoulder today, so this will be an exciting stage!
The first kilometers are restless, and with 25 km done, we have a 7 men breakaway only 40’’ ahead of the pack. The attackers are:
Johannessen, Gladysh, Rosskopf, Stroll, Dewulf, Beltran and Morin.
In the pack, King Power, Isostar, Evonik, Aker and cycleYorkshire are working.
No wait! My mistakes: the Brits wanted for Romo to try and get to the break, but the local is not let go.
Some sprinters are at the front. Probably more do not be dropped too early than for the intermediate sprint, 55 km ahead on the road. Plus, all the points should go the break.
With 130 km to go, the gap is now 3’18. And in this tranquil moment, it’s time to tell you tha the best climber in the break is Johannessen, but Rosskopf has some more punch.
You would have guessed that the break would be more interested in the best climber competition, but knowing that the peloton keeps them on a tight leash, they sprint in Ainsa, former capital of an ancient kingdom, and one of the most beautiful villages in Spain.
Morin is the strongest at this game. Behind are Gladysh, Johannessen, Stroll and Beltran.
The peloton is 2’41 behind, with Huski and Aegon joining the chase.
75 km to go, and in 5 km the leaders will attack the Alto de Vió (cat. 2, 12 km, 4,9%). A good appetizer for the stage and for the race!
Sweeny leads the climbing for the pack. Higuita, Blums and Preidler are near the head of the peloton.
And we are our first dropped! Lutsyshyn, whose sprinting performance made think of a bad form, Cisse and Munyaneza are the first to get behind, 9 km from the top.
In the break, Morin, Dewulf and Beltran are dropped. Hard to think they’ll be able to join back in the short descent. The peloton is on their tail anyway.
Stroll takes the 10 points. Only Johannessen was able to contest them.
Not much rest, and then the two leaders are in the Alto de Fanlo (cat. 3, 3,1 km, 6,5%). They have a 22’’ gap on Rosskopf and Gladysh and 1’12 on a 54 men peloton. Some favorites like Warchol or helpers like Chamorro missed the split, but their 108 men group should make it back.
Most sprinters and time-trialists have been dropped.
As the two leaders make their way up, Dina attacks from the pack. Nobody follows.
He easily overcomes the remnants of the breakaway and take the 6 points at the top. Stroll is 2nd and now has 14 points in the best climber competition.
In the pack, Degenkolb is dropped. He might come back in the 16 next kilometers, before the last climb, but his red jersey is doomed anyway.
The white jersey has been dropped too. 108 riders in the pack for now, 1’12 behind the head of the race.
The said leaders are brought back with 35 km to go thanks to the work of Isostar and Aker.
It’s a 144 riders strong peloton at the foot of our last climb of the day, the Alto de Petralba (cat. 2, 8,8 km, 5,5%).
No movement in the first 6 km, but the climbing is brutal: 3,4 km from the summit, only 53 guys in the pack. Bol is still here, and was seen near the front.
Eastman and Formolo are attentive – or ready to go.
But there are no attacks ahead of the KoM sprint, won by Quita ahead of Bettiol and Petelin. Stroll will wear the best climber jersey tomorrow.
17,6 km to go, 49 men in the pack. Now it’s downhill and flat to Sabiñánigo, where there is a small bump.
5,8 km to go, and Burke attacks on the flat!
2 km to go, and the Zwift rider was nearly brought back, but not quite. He’s got a slight lead on Sosa, who’s a bit ahead of the 44 men group lead by Formolo.
Last kilometer! Sosa and Burke are together, 12’’ ahead of the pack. A group of 8, with Carboni, Chamorro or Vingegaard is behind.
800 m. Not much change, but hard to think that one of the late attackers will have this one.
600 m. The two leaders don’t even seem able to sprint anymore.
400 m. Formolo now has a clear lead. Dina, Dombrowski, Latour and Kudus are behind, but faster.
200 m. Formolo worked too much to catch the late attackers. Latour and Dina are the best placed for now, but the road is stacked.
Inkelaar is the 2nd Aker rider. Vosekalns and Blums are here for Evonik.
In the last 100 meters, Latour is the fastest.
Dina takes it for a wheel! Finally a victory for MOL after a strong beginning in the sprints. Latour is 2nd.
The battle for the 3rd place is quite as hard, and it’s race favorite Dombrowski who takes it, ahead of Barthe and the other favorite Kudus.
Gaps are given after the 36th rider. Vingegaard’s group is 1’ late.
In the GC, Latour takes the lead, as Dina was caught in the split yesterday. Dombrowski and Yates complete the podium.
As said earlier, Stroll is the best climber. Inkelaar leads the young rider classification, in the same time as Higuita and Sosa. Gazelle takes the lead in the team classification.
Well, things are certainly shaping up! Rendezvous tomorrow for another hard and exciting stage.
