Welcome back for the Vuelta 2022. We’re today in Mos, and I am, as always, Imladrik, your fellow reporter.

Last flat stage of the week! Indeed, the next chance for a sprinter will be on stage 8, and then it’ll probably be over until Madrid. But let’s keep that for the upcoming weeks, and concentrate on today’s road. The near to 170 km stage is full of small hills, who should not be too much of a problem for the PT sprinters, but will surely cause a bit of fatigue when it’ll be time to shine.

We’re on the west today, in Galicia, near the ocean and the Portuguese border. And indeed, we will finish in Portugal. A bit of fresh air before the mountains!

Yes, I talk too much. Let’s have a look on the favorites.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2022/Reports/GTM/Vuelta%20a%20Espana/S4/20230104225319_1.jpg

Yup, same as before. Degenkolb is seen as able to keep his red jersey one more day, and Petit (2nd) and Van Stayen (4th) should be is main contenders. Degenkolb’s lead out, Santos, is also seen as having a shot at a good result. Seeing the results of stage 2, everything’s possible, but not sure it’ll be ISA’s strategy.

No mountain points to win today, but some teams mighty want to make the race a bit harder for the sprinters.
And that’s enough predictions for today, as the race is about to begin.

The weather is a bit better today, though still cloudy. And when I thought than, in May, I could have some sunny vacations in Spain! Anyway, the race is on and the usual teams try to take the break, with Isostar, Evonik and Los Pollos.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2022/Reports/GTM/Vuelta%20a%20Espana/S4/20230104230056_1.jpg

We also saw the best-climber-until-the-actual-mountains pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2022/Micros/yor.png Suter try to go, probably wanting to show it around one last time.

After 30 km though, we still can not see a break though: Mol and Tinkoff, with pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2022/Micros/isa.png Ferreyra as always representing ISA in the front, seem to know that the day will be long and they are not keen to let more than one guy upfront. For now, pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2022/Micros/akm.png Stokbro managed to escape, and he has a 40’’ lead.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2022/Reports/GTM/Vuelta%20a%20Espana/S4/20230104230515_1.jpg

117 km left, and we finally have a break weak enough to satisfy the peloton. Stockbro is now with pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2022/Micros/iso.png Sweeny and pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2022/Micros/afr.png Munyaneza.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2022/Reports/GTM/Vuelta%20a%20Espana/S4/20230104230631_1.jpg

None of them threaten the two white jersey contenders. Unless they win the stage, obviously. They have a 2’30 lead over the peloton.

Mol and Tinkoff are the main teams in front of the pack, with De Stilj. Seems like ISA is OK to let the others do the work and, well, who could blame them.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2022/Reports/GTM/Vuelta%20a%20Espana/S4/20230104230949_1.jpg

There is a fierce battle for the intermediate sprint in the break, and it’s taken by pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2022/Micros/akm.png Stokbro ahead of pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2022/Micros/iso.png Sweeny. The peloton can be seen in the back.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2022/Reports/GTM/Vuelta%20a%20Espana/S4/20230104231145_1.jpg

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2022/Micros/isa.png Degenkolb went in the front, lead out by Santos. pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2022/Micros/dsc.png Bol is in Bettiol’s wheel. pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2022/Micros/tti.png Banaszek follows pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2022/Micros/duo.png Van Stayen and is followed by pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2022/Micros/pol.png Philipsen. pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2022/Micros/lph.png Abdul Halil is in pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2022/Micros/mol.png Petit’s wheel.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2022/Reports/GTM/Vuelta%20a%20Espana/S4/20230104231413_1.jpg

Perfect sprint by the latter, who takes the 2 points ahead of Banaszek.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2022/Reports/GTM/Vuelta%20a%20Espana/S4/20230104231432_1.jpg

73 km to go. The lead is around 2 minutes, and the hardest part of the race is beginning. The peloton is attentive: at the front, we have the sprinters as well as the GC rider and the puncheurs who don’t want to be caught in a split. Maybe someone is planning an attack, too. Well, we’re still far from the finish line.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2022/Reports/GTM/Vuelta%20a%20Espana/S4/20230104231843_1.jpg

ISA saw the movements and brings more men to the front. They don’t want to let that one go.

30 km to go. An attack from pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2022/Micros/akm.png Stokbro drops pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2022/Micros/iso.png Sweeny. The pack is 1’10 behind the leaders.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2022/Reports/GTM/Vuelta%20a%20Espana/S4/20230104232242_1.jpg

The turns and the ups and down stretch out the peloton in the residential quarters. There’s a dense crowd here in Portugal!

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2022/Reports/GTM/Vuelta%20a%20Espana/S4/20230104232422_1.jpg

25 km to go and still a 1’30 lead for the two leaders.

The catch is finally made with 14 km to go. pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2022/Micros/afr.png Munyaneza is the last to resist and the peloton is still complete.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2022/Reports/GTM/Vuelta%20a%20Espana/S4/20230104232711_1.jpg

There is one hardish bump to overcome, and then it’s all downhill to the finish.

No attacks, so with 5,6 km to go, we quickly head up for another mass sprint.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2022/Reports/GTM/Vuelta%20a%20Espana/S4/20230104232941_1.jpg

2 km to go and only ISA has a trains. The one in front of pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2022/Micros/isa.png Degenkolb is Baska. pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2022/Micros/duo.png Van Stayen, pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2022/Micros/mos.png Swift, pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2022/Micros/lph.png Abdul Halil and pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2022/Micros/dsc.png Bol already seem far from the front.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2022/Reports/GTM/Vuelta%20a%20Espana/S4/20230104233128_1.jpg

Red kite and there’s again a problem in ISA train, as Santos has a small gap on the red jersey. We saw earlier that the Brasilian was a favorite himself, so maybe he’s hoping for something…

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2022/Reports/GTM/Vuelta%20a%20Espana/S4/20230104233319_1.jpg

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2022/Micros/tti.png Banaszek, pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2022/Micros/pol.png Philipsen, pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2022/Micros/mol.png Petit and pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2022/Micros/zpc.png Sureda are all ready to take of.
pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2022/Micros/ela.png Bouglas might make it back if he can catch Sureda’s wheel. The other sprinters are too far.

800 m. Not much change, Santos seems to be going for himself!

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2022/Reports/GTM/Vuelta%20a%20Espana/S4/20230104233409_1.jpg

600 m. The Brasilian is still head.pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2022/Micros/pol.png Philipsen and pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2022/Micros/mol.png Petit try to overcome pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2022/Micros/isa.png Degenkolb. pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2022/Micros/ela.png Bouglas comes very fast, but he’s already in the wind.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2022/Reports/GTM/Vuelta%20a%20Espana/S4/20230104233511_1.jpg

400 m. Petit is losing speed at an alarming rate. Santos is still strong. Degenkolb and Philipsen are evenly matched.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2022/Reports/GTM/Vuelta%20a%20Espana/S4/20230104233659_1.jpg

200 m. Santos is done, it’ll play between the Belgian and the German.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2022/Reports/GTM/Vuelta%20a%20Espana/S4/20230104233802_1.jpg

100 last meters! Philipsen seems to be tiring.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2022/Reports/GTM/Vuelta%20a%20Espana/S4/20230104233852_1.jpg

And guess what? Yes! Another strong victory for Degenkolb, the third in four stages! The red jersey shows his authority. He has a wheel over Philipsen, who should at least lead the young rider classification.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2022/Reports/GTM/Vuelta%20a%20Espana/S4/20230104234012_1.jpg

ISA brings in another surprise, as Santos finishes 3rd. pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2022/Micros/tti.png Banaszek is at the foot of the podium, ahead of pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2022/Micros/mol.png Petit, pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2022/Micros/zpc.png Sureda and pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2022/Micros/ela.png Bouglas. The Greek was strong, who knows what he could have done with a better position!

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2022/Reports/GTM/Vuelta%20a%20Espana/S4/20230104234134_1.jpg

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2022/Micros/lph.png Abdul Halil is the best of the rest, 8th, with pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2022/Micros/afr.png Cisse and pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2022/Micros/mos.png Swift to close the top 10.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2022/Reports/GTM/Vuelta%20a%20Espana/S4/20230104234230_1.jpg

Surprisingly, the judges give a 1’13 gap after the 80th rider. Let’s hope nobody of importance has been caught in that split.

The GC podium is, rpobably of the last time, still occupied by Degenkolb, Petit and Baska. Philipsen and Van Stayen are 4th and 5th.
The Belgian is now 3rd for the points, but Degenkolb already has a 68 points lead on Petit.
Philipsen will be in white – well, in another white jersey – tomorrow, but that should be the only day.
Five teams have lost time in the split : King Power, Puma, Isostar, Project: Africa and Evonik.
