Vuelta a Espana - Stage 3
Imladrik
Welcome tu Cullera for the 3rd stage of the 2022 Vuelta a Espana. We’ve moved a it and are now in the Communitat Valenciana. And indeed, we’ll stay around Valencia, as our finish line is right north of the local capital. Ut let’s not get ahead of ourselves! Today’s stage should go to a sprinter, as the lone category 3 climb should not be to difficult, and, anyway, it’s far of the end of the stage. But after yesterday, I’m not sure of anything anymore.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2022/Reports/GTM/Vuelta%20a%20Espana/S3/20230102222134_1.jpg

Still, the red jersey pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2022/Micros/isa.png Degenkolb is the best placed to add a second victory to his track record – and a third in a row for ISA-Hexacta.
The other main favorites, pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2022/Micros/mol.png Petit and
pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2022/Micros/duo.png Van Stayen, were runner-up respectively in stages 1 and 2.

You might have noticed that this stage will deliver the first points in the best climber competition, so there’s a lot of interest in the breakaway. But as the previous days, the sprinting teams do not want to let too big a group go, and after 20 km, pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2022/Micros/evo.png Ansons and pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2022/Micros/yor.png O'Loughlin are alone up the road.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2022/Reports/GTM/Vuelta%20a%20Espana/S3/20230102223124_1.jpg

Los Pollos Hermanos and Isostar Specialized are trying very hard to put someone in the break, but ISA, Tinkoff and MOL don’t want any of that and they shut down any new attack.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2022/Reports/GTM/Vuelta%20a%20Espana/S3/20230102223235_1.jpg

There is one they can’t follow though, and as 43 km already have been gobbled up, which roughly make one hour of cycling, pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2022/Micros/iso.png Sweeny could join the two leaders. Not for long though, as the continuous attacks didn’t let the pace dropped, so the peloton can already be seen, 43 seconds behind.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2022/Reports/GTM/Vuelta%20a%20Espana/S3/20230102223515_1.jpg

And yes, with 125 km to go, the breakaway is indeed caught. pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2022/Micros/grm.png Hulgaard and pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2022/Micros/akm.png Stokbro counter.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2022/Reports/GTM/Vuelta%20a%20Espana/S3/20230102223619_1.jpg

The latter can’t follow through, though, and the new break of the day is formed by the former and pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2022/Micros/yor.png Suter. They lead is 1 minute. pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2022/Micros/grm.png Hulgaard is only 4 seconds behind pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2022/Micros/kng.png Salazar in the young rider competition, so he could virtually take the jersey, if he wins the sprint in Riba-roja de Túria. 48 km still to ride for this to happen though.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2022/Reports/GTM/Vuelta%20a%20Espana/S3/20230102223810_1.jpg

As we are headed for the intermediate sprint, don’t hesitate to head for Riba-roja, where you can see the remnants of the medieval fortifications and cycle through the natural park.

But the leaders are already there! pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2022/Micros/yor.png Suter quite easily wins the intermediate sprint and the 6 bonus seconds.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2022/Reports/GTM/Vuelta%20a%20Espana/S3/20230102224125_1.jpg

In the peloton, the trains are setting up. It’s probably the moment to point out that the finish in El Puig only awards 30 points for the green jersey competition.
pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2022/Micros/mol.png Petit times his sprint at perfection and takes 4 points and 2 seconds, ahead of pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2022/Micros/tti.png Banaszek and pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2022/Micros/pum.png Steimle. pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2022/Micros/isa.png Degenkolb either didn’t care enough, either missed completely.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2022/Reports/GTM/Vuelta%20a%20Espana/S3/20230102224357_1.jpg

65 km to go, and the lead is 2’30.

As the breakaway is approaching the Puerto del Oronet (cat. 3, 5,3 km, 4,8%), in another natural park, the Parc Natural de la Serra Calderona, North of Valencia, with it’s multiples cycling roads. The sprinters and some GC favorites are near the head of the peloton, attentive to any split.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2022/Reports/GTM/Vuelta%20a%20Espana/S3/20230102224928_1.jpg

No special event in the climb, where pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2022/Micros/yor.png Suter is once again the strongest. He takes 6 points and will wear the best climber jersey tomorrow.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2022/Reports/GTM/Vuelta%20a%20Espana/S3/20230102225026_1.jpg

43 km to go, the gap is down to 1’20. pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2022/Micros/mol.png Dina takes the remaining points, as he’s leading the pack.

The catch is made with 10 km to go. Now the sprinting teams will have time to organize, and no fog to be seen up the road.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2022/Reports/GTM/Vuelta%20a%20Espana/S3/20230102225426_1.jpg

7 km to go. ISA, Tinkoff and MOL with a high pace now.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2022/Reports/GTM/Vuelta%20a%20Espana/S3/20230102225558_1.jpg

3 km to go and we have our trains !

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2022/Reports/GTM/Vuelta%20a%20Espana/S3/20230102225935_1.jpg

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2022/Micros/isa.png ISA is on the left, with Baska (in green), Santos and Degenkolb. Behind are pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2022/Micros/dsc.png Bol, pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2022/Micros/afr.png Cisse and pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2022/Micros/zpc.png Sureda in their wheel.
pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2022/Micros/tti.png Tinkoff is on the right, with Foliforov, Vlasov and Banaszek. pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2022/Micros/duo.png Van Stayen, pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2022/Micros/mos.png Swift, pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2022/Micros/pol.png Philipsen, pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2022/Micros/pum.png Steimle and pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2022/Micros/ela.png Bouglas behind them.
In the center, pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2022/Micros/mol.png Petit is waiting for his team. To bad for pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2022/Micros/lph.png Abdul Halil and pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2022/Micros/yor.png Rodenberg, who chose his wheel.

1,5 km to go. Petit found his lead-out! Tinkoff train has been disturbed though, and Banaszek is now in Van Stayen’s wheel.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2022/Reports/GTM/Vuelta%20a%20Espana/S3/20230102230043_1.jpg

Flamme rouge! Petit and Degenkolb are quite far from their lead-outs, Van Stayen already is in the wind.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2022/Reports/GTM/Vuelta%20a%20Espana/S3/20230102230152_1.jpg

600 m. Degenkolb, on the left, has a short lead and Philipsen in his wheel. Bol is trying to find space between the lead-outs. Van Stayen already seems to be tiring.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2022/Reports/GTM/Vuelta%20a%20Espana/S3/20230102230337_1.jpg

400 m. Bol and Swift are the fastest in front, but Degenkolb is still leading. Philipsen wait for the right time.
Sureda, Steimle and Rodenberg are fast, but far behind the others.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2022/Reports/GTM/Vuelta%20a%20Espana/S3/20230102230435_1.jpg

200 m. Degenkolb still leads. Philipsen is finally trying to find space, as is Cisse.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2022/Reports/GTM/Vuelta%20a%20Espana/S3/20230102230523_1.jpg

And it’s a second stage win for Degenkolb! The third in a row for ISA.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2022/Reports/GTM/Vuelta%20a%20Espana/S3/20230102230628_1.jpg

Big battle behind the red jersey: Petit finally comes in 2nd, nothing ahead of Bol, Philipsen and Swift.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2022/Reports/GTM/Vuelta%20a%20Espana/S3/20230102230634_1.jpg

Van Stayen is 6th, Cisse 7th.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2022/Reports/GTM/Vuelta%20a%20Espana/S3/20230102230757_1.jpg

Sureda comes in 8th, ahead of Rodenberg.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2022/Reports/GTM/Vuelta%20a%20Espana/S3/20230102230838_1.jpg

Then it’s Steimle, Trondsen, Bouglas, and finally Banasczek. Abdul Hallil finishes with the lead-outs.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2022/Reports/GTM/Vuelta%20a%20Espana/S3/20230102230905_1.jpg

In the GC, Degenkolb wears the red jersey more than ever, with a 22’’ lead on Petit, with his second 2nd place, and his teammate Baska, who still enjoys the result of yesterday’s victory. Same thing in the points competition.
As said previously, Suter will wear the best climber jersey, and Salazar keeps his young rider jersey.

Tomorrow will be the last sprinting day of the week! So be sure to join us up the road to Portugal. We will meet you there.
