Tour of Missouri - Stage 2
niconico
Stage 2 is about a 200-kilometres ride from Clinton to Springfield. There are no KoM Sprints en route, which means that Frischkorn will ride in his KoM Jersey today and at least two more stages as tomorrow’s stage is a time trial. The finale today looks interesting though with a quite bumpy approach to the finish line, maybe this could be the day of a powerful rider like Hincapie.

Today’s breakaway were Dean (Procycling), Godfrey (Gatorade), O’Neill (British Airways), Wren (American Suzuki B), Hungerbühler (Slipstream B) and Torres (Fed-Ex).

i285.photobucket.com/albums/ll76/A_Schleck/MG09/PCM0003-1.jpg

The first Points Sprint was won by Dean ahead of Godfrey and Hungerbühler. This sprint also resulted in Wren not being able to keep up as he was doomed to chase for the rest of the day.

With 130 kilometres to go the pack upped the pace with the deficit at 10 minutes, so it looked like the pack was in control of things. Only problem was that there were only 2 riders chasing. Sonnery of White Bear Steyr and Velo of Fed-Ex.

i285.photobucket.com/albums/ll76/A_Schleck/MG09/PCM0009-1.jpg
Brown in the yellow jersey only wanted to invest one of his team-mates in the chase, and that team-mate happened to be his best lead-out man.

The advantage was coming down steadily, but not fast enough as Godfrey took one back on Dean winning the seconds Points Sprint.

Dean would end up winning this battle with 2 to 1 as he claimed the third Points Sprint on the day.

The teams back in the pack were still not cooperating properly and with just under 90 kilometres to go the break was still over 9 minutes ahead.

Blaise Sonnery and Marco Velo trying to singlehandedly bring back the breakaway.

This could be a decisive moment in this race with the gap not coming down at all. If it continued like this the overall winner of this race will most likely come from the 5-man leading group and today’s stage winner should be Godfrey or Dean.

But!

Finally the teams came to an agreement back in the pack as a lot of teams chipped in to chase the leaders down. But have they reacted too late?

With 30 kilometres to go the break still had 4 and a half minutes on the pack, but at this point Torres and O’Neill had been dropped, leaving only Dean, Godfrey and Hungerbühler up front. This might shatter the chances of the breakaway.

Godfrey, Dean and Hungerbühler digging deep to hold off the pack.

The gap is coming down dramatically. With 14 kilometres left it’s down to 1’42. The break is not going to last. With 8 kilometres to go it’s all over for the three leaders.

Jason Donald preparing for tomorrow by leading the pack the final distance to bridge up with the early break.

The sprint was slightly uphill and as no trains managed to get to the front, Brammeier has a small gap.

Haselbacher has Brown and Davis in his wheel and he goes past Brammeier, it’s going to be one of these three riders. Brown takes the lead as we enter the final kilometre.

i285.photobucket.com/albums/ll76/A_Schleck/MG09/PCM0027.jpg

This should be a perfect position for Allan Davis to grab a win.

i285.photobucket.com/albums/ll76/A_Schleck/MG09/PCM0029-1.jpg

But Graeme Brown could not be matched today. Superior win as he was simply faster than Davis today. Haselbacher takes 3rd, as Brown extends his lead in the GC. Dean and Godfrey managed to stay with the pack in the final kilometres, so they will move up considerably in the GC after a great ride from both.
