Vuelta a Espana - Stage 2
Imladrik
Welcome back for the 2nd stage of the 2022 Vuelta a Espana. We’re today in Castrillo del Val, a nice name for a village in the vicinity of Burgos, 200 km North of the country’s capital, Madrid. Not much else to say about it, except maybe that it’s part of the Camino Frances, the most used road to Santiago de Compostella.

I’m, as always, Imladrik, and I’ll accompany you and the peloton during the 160 km to Aguilar de Campoo.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2022/Reports/GTM/Vuelta%20a%20Espana/S2/20230102182842_1.jpg

Today’s stage should still go to a sprinter, despite the small bumps at the end. Still, riders like pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2022/Micros/duo.png Van Stayen or pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2022/Micros/dsc.png Bol might have an interest in this stage and a slight advantage.
The biggest favorite remains red jersey pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2022/Micros/isa.png Degenkolb, who has to want to add a 2nd stage win to his perfect debut.

As soon as the race is on, the breakaway candidates begin to attack. Not a very friendly weather today, but that doesn’t discourage the sprinters’teams to organize.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2022/Reports/GTM/Vuelta%20a%20Espana/S2/20230102183536_1.jpg

15 km are already done, and pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2022/Micros/isa.png Ferreyra shot down another breakaway attempt, too numerous for the leader’s team.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2022/Reports/GTM/Vuelta%20a%20Espana/S2/20230102183812_1.jpg

And finally, with 136 km left to ride, the peloton seems to have settled for a 2 men break.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2022/Reports/GTM/Vuelta%20a%20Espana/S2/20230102185130_1.jpg

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2022/Micros/kng.png Salazar wears the white jersey. He was in the break yesterday already, and should hope to keep his young rider competition lead thanks to the bonus seconds in Herrera de Pisuerga, later down the road. Or maybe he only wants more TV time, who could say.
pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2022/Micros/afr.png Van Heerden is with him, as it’s beginning to rain. I’m happy to be in my car, if you want to know.
The two riders have a minute over the peloton, where pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2022/Micros/mol.png MOL, pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2022/Micros/isa.png ISA and pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2022/Micros/tti.png Tinkoff are working.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2022/Reports/GTM/Vuelta%20a%20Espana/S2/20230102185459_1.jpg

They shot down every other attack, though pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2022/Micros/grm.png Hulgaard managed to get out. He was with Salazar yesterday.
The three quickly come together and have a 2’ gap with 115 km to go. In the peloton, the sprinting teams bring more force in front to discourage any other attack.

With 90 km to go, the fog is coming. It’s thick, and that could be dangerous.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2022/Reports/GTM/Vuelta%20a%20Espana/S2/20230102190536_1.jpg

The leaders are approaching the intermediate sprint with a 2’15 lead. The peloton never let the gap get over 3 minutes.

The sprint will take place in Herrera de Pisuerga. The city in itself is not particularly interesting, but it’s worth to note that a wisigothic necropolis of the 6th and 7th centuries was discovered there. Most of the findings are in the archeological museum in Madrid, though.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2022/Micros/afr.png Van Heerden is the first to cross the sprint linen ahead of pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2022/Micros/kng.png Salazar and pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2022/Micros/grm.png Hulgaard. The King Power rider will keep his white jersey, if the U25 sprinters can’t get bonus seconds like yesterday.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2022/Reports/GTM/Vuelta%20a%20Espana/S2/20230102191017_1.jpg

Behind, in the peloton, the sprinters are ready. pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2022/Micros/dsc.png Bol and pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2022/Micros/mol.png Petit (in green) are the best positioned.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2022/Reports/GTM/Vuelta%20a%20Espana/S2/20230102191148_1.jpg

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2022/Micros/tti.png Banaszek is the best of the pack, ahead of pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2022/Micros/pum.png Steimle, pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2022/Micros/isa.png Degenkolb, pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2022/Micros/mol.png Petit and pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2022/Micros/pol.png Philipsen.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2022/Reports/GTM/Vuelta%20a%20Espana/S2/20230102191213_1.jpg

83 km to go with a 1’45 lead, which quickly comes back up to 2’ as the domestiques come back in front of the peloton. We come back to you with a small break.

The break is over, and the breakaway will be also, as the gap is under the minute. The pack can be seen emerging from the fog.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2022/Reports/GTM/Vuelta%20a%20Espana/S2/20230102191545_1.jpg

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2022/Micros/kng.png Salazar tries to grab some more TV time.
The catch is made by pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2022/Micros/mol.png Dina with 14 km to go and two small bumps to go.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2022/Reports/GTM/Vuelta%20a%20Espana/S2/20230102191816_1.jpg

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2022/Micros/isa.png Ferreyra with a fast pace in front.

The peloton is disorganized by the fog – one could ask whether it was a good idea to maintain the stage in this conditions, and with 1,8 km to go, we have two ISA riders in front, but they are not Degenkolb: these are pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2022/Micros/isa.png Baska and Santos. Seems like the red jersey couldn’t take the wheel of his train…

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2022/Reports/GTM/Vuelta%20a%20Espana/S2/20230102192114_1.jpg

Last kilometer, and in the fog all is quite messy. Santos dropped back, but Baska is still ahead, barely visible.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2022/Reports/GTM/Vuelta%20a%20Espana/S2/20230102192344_1.jpg

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2022/Micros/tti.png Vlasov has pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2022/Micros/duo.png Van Stayen and pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2022/Micros/isa.png Degenkolb in his wheel.
pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2022/Micros/tti.png Banaszek follows the red jersey.
pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2022/Micros/mos.png Swift, pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2022/Micros/lph.png Abdul Halil, pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2022/Micros/mol.png Petit and pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2022/Micros/dsc.png Bol are a line behind. The other sprinters are further back.

700 m and pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2022/Micros/isa.png Baska has a small gap. Santos is leading out pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2022/Micros/duo.png Van Stayen.
pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2022/Micros/tti.png Vlasov is followed by pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2022/Micros/tti.png Kanerva, while his sprinter still his behind pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2022/Micros/isa.png Degenkolb.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2022/Reports/GTM/Vuelta%20a%20Espana/S2/20230102192540_1.jpg

500 m. The sprinters are now coming way faster than the Slovakian champion.
The first line has Swift, Banaszek, Degenkolb and Van Stayen.
Bol and Abdul Hallil are right behind.
Petit and Steimle are on a third row, with the Tinkoff domestiques.
And then we have Cisse, Rodenberg, Philipsen and Bouglas, who don’t have much space.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2022/Reports/GTM/Vuelta%20a%20Espana/S2/20230102192848_1.jpg

300 m and Baska is still leading! Van Stayen and Degenkolb are already fading behind.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2022/Reports/GTM/Vuelta%20a%20Espana/S2/20230102192954_1.jpg

100 m, and that should be good for Baska! Not sure how his team will take this victory though. Not much change behind him, with Bol trying to find space to pass Swift.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2022/Reports/GTM/Vuelta%20a%20Espana/S2/20230102193125_1.jpg

Baska celebrates quite a strange victory!
His leader still has a small edge for the 2nd place, which would be a great result for ISA nonetheless.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2022/Reports/GTM/Vuelta%20a%20Espana/S2/20230102193235_1.jpg

But Van Stayen is the first (well, the second really) to cross the line, ahead of the red jersey.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2022/Reports/GTM/Vuelta%20a%20Espana/S2/20230102193317_1.jpg

Banaszek settles for 4th and Swift closes the top 5.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2022/Reports/GTM/Vuelta%20a%20Espana/S2/20230102193416_1.jpg

Abdul Halil takes a satisfying 6th, given the circumstances. Bol 7th place will be disappointing, seeing his good positioning at the beginning of the sprint. Cisse comes back strongly to take the 8th place, ahead of Steimle and Petit, who couldn’t repeat yesterday performance.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2022/Reports/GTM/Vuelta%20a%20Espana/S2/20230102193501_1.jpg

In the GC, Degenkolb keeps a gap on his teammate, who is 2nd. Petit and Van Stayen share the same time, 18’’ behind the red jersey. Exactly the same situation in the point classification, as you could expect.
Thanks to the fact that all the young sprinter are not on the podium,
pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2022/Micros/kng.png Salazar keeps his young rider jersey.

As I’ll be heading for dinner in Aguilar de Campoo – one of the oldest marquisate in Spain – I thank you for following this race with me, and I’ll see you tomorrow for the 3rd stage of the 2022 Vuelta a Espana.
