Imladrik
Welcome to the 2022 Vuelta a Espana! The 2nd of the 3 PT Grand Tours, after a fantastic Giro reported by fellow Ulrich Ulriksen, and won by Pierre-Henri Lecuisinier, for Evonik.

But let’s leave Italy alone, as we are in Spain. I’m Imladrik, and I’ll be your reporter for the next three weeks.
More precisely, we’re in Castilla y Leon, in the ancient ruins of Numancia, one of the last city to resist to Rome’s conquest. But enough said about Italy, we said. We’ll head East, toward the aragonian city of Ejea de los Caballeros. You’ll have to ask the locals about this name.

Our first stage is the a sprinter’s stage. Or at list it should be, with its 191 km of descent and flattish road, its only intermediate sprint and its uncategorized bump. Nothing should stop the main teams to control the race, and that shows on the favorites’ list.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2022/Reports/GTM/Vuelta%20a%20Espana/S1/20221224173037_1.jpg

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2022/Micros/isa.png Degenkolb is our day’s favorite, but we can bet than pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2022/Micros/duo.png Van Stayen and pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2022/Micros/mol.png Petit will not give up the idea to wear the first leader’s jersey that easily.

And here we go! Three weeks of intense riding begin now! As one could expect for a first stage, the attacks are numerous, and the sprinters’ teams are not to keen on letting a larger group go.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2022/Reports/GTM/Vuelta%20a%20Espana/S1/20221224173725_1.jpg

After 15 km, only 3 riders are out: pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2022/Micros/grm.png Hulgaard, pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2022/Micros/iso.png Andersen and pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2022/Micros/kng.png Salazar.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2022/Reports/GTM/Vuelta%20a%20Espana/S1/20221224173848_1.jpg

They have a 1’30 lead on the peloton, lead by pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2022/Micros/tti.png Tinkoff, pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2022/Micros/dsc.png De Stijl, pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2022/Micros/isa.png ISA and pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2022/Micros/mol.png MOL.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2022/Reports/GTM/Vuelta%20a%20Espana/S1/20221224174103_1.jpg

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2022/Micros/evo.png Evonik really are trying to put someone in the break, but the peloton doesn’t let that happen. pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2022/Micros/iso.png Sweeny also tries to go, but he is equally shot down.

In the break, Salazar has had a problem and is 0’45 behind the other two.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2022/Reports/GTM/Vuelta%20a%20Espana/S1/20221224174149_1.jpg

With 80 km to go to the intermediate sprint, the leaders have a 2’40 gap. Salazar could join the head of the race, but he seems spent. He takes his relays like the others nonetheless.

Fast forward to the intermediate sprint in Facite. The gap is 2’30, after having hit a maximum of 3 minutes. pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2022/Micros/kng.png Salazar took the maximum points, ahead of pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2022/Micros/grm.png Hulgaard, but we missed the action due to an impromptu closing of our eyes. Can’t promise it won’t happen again though. Anyway, there are two ranking spots to take for the peloton. Let’s see if they fight for it.

They do, and pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2022/Micros/isa.png Degenkolb makes a statement by taking the first spot ahead of pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2022/Micros/ela.png Bouglas.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2022/Reports/GTM/Vuelta%20a%20Espana/S1/20221224174814_1.jpg

70 km to go, and ISA is strong at the head of the pack. You all can get back to sleep for one hour or so, or you can keep up with us and admire the beautiful landscape of Northern Spain.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2022/Reports/GTM/Vuelta%20a%20Espana/S1/20221224174922_1.jpg

The attacks begin in the break with more or less 30 km to go and the pack on their tail. pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2022/Micros/grm.png Hulgaard and pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2022/Micros/iso.png Andersen manage to get a small gap.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2022/Reports/GTM/Vuelta%20a%20Espana/S1/20221224175221_1.jpg

But they can’t keep it up, and the three leaders are back together, the peloton 1’15 behind, with the same teams working to catch them.

A surprise at the 15 km mark as there are some splits in the peloton! They seem only due to ISA fast pace, are there is barely any wind.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2022/Reports/GTM/Vuelta%20a%20Espana/S1/20221224175659_1.jpg

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2022/Micros/aeg.png Olivier and pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2022/Micros/pol.png Latour seem to have been caught on the wrong side, as well as pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2022/Micros/dsc.png Yates and pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2022/Micros/yor.png Carthy. With many leaders in the back, it should all come back together, shouldn’t it?
The situation is more worrying for pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2022/Micros/p4e.png Lutsyshyn, who shouldn’t be at the back of pack at this point of the race…

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2022/Micros/tti.png Tinkoff doesn’t care and they relay ISA to put on a strong pace at the head of the peloton.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2022/Reports/GTM/Vuelta%20a%20Espana/S1/20221224175748_1.jpg

The catch is made with 10,5 km to go, and the trains already seem ready to set.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2022/Reports/GTM/Vuelta%20a%20Espana/S1/20221224180110_1.jpg

A strange one for Tinkoff though, as pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2022/Micros/tti.png Foliforov is already in the wind ahead of Banaszek. pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2022/Micros/mol.png Petit is trying to catch their wheel.
The ISA riders are working way better together. pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2022/Micros/isa.png Baska and Santos are leading out Degenkolb. pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2022/Micros/afr.png Cisse and pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2022/Micros/dsc.png Bol are looking for a wheel to take. pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2022/Micros/ela.png Bouglas, pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2022/Micros/lph.png Abdul Halil and pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2022/Micros/pol.png Philipsen seem decided for the ISA train.

Did they not see that they still are a long way to the finish line?

3 km to go and the teams seemed to have realized they are not done yet. After a moment of incomprehension, all is back together. pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2022/Micros/tti.png Vlasov replaced is teammate to protect Banaszek, and pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2022/Micros/yor.png Rodenberg and pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2022/Micros/mos.png Swift are following pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2022/Micros/lph.png Abdul Halil.
pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2022/Micros/duo.png Van Stayen is far back, behind pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2022/Micros/grm.png Trondsen and pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2022/Micros/zpc.png Sureda.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2022/Reports/GTM/Vuelta%20a%20Espana/S1/20221224180549_1.jpg

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2022/Micros/p4e.png Lutsyshyn is at the head of an 115 riders group, still with a small gap...

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2022/Reports/GTM/Vuelta%20a%20Espana/S1/20221224180601_1.jpg

Red kite!
The trains have been messed up in the roads of Ejea. pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2022/Micros/isa.png Santos is now leading out Degenkolb, pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2022/Micros/mol.png Petit and pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2022/Micros/afr.png Cisse.
pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2022/Micros/ela.png Bouglas already is in the wind, with pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2022/Micros/pol.png Philipsen behind him.
pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2022/Micros/tti.png Banaszek abandoned his train to take Cisse’s wheel.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2022/Reports/GTM/Vuelta%20a%20Espana/S1/20221224180945_1.jpg

500 m. Degenkolb is in the wind. Petit is trying to pass him on the left. Cisse, Banaszk and Bouglas are some meters behind. Philipsen, Rodenberg and the others more behind.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2022/Reports/GTM/Vuelta%20a%20Espana/S1/20221224181107_1.jpg

300 m. The German champion still has a slight advantage, but the others are faster and already catching on Petit.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2022/Reports/GTM/Vuelta%20a%20Espana/S1/20221224181207_1.jpg

100 m. Everyone is losing speed, for Abdul Halil in the back.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2022/Reports/GTM/Vuelta%20a%20Espana/S1/20221224181326_1.jpg

And it’s a very solid victory for pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2022/Micros/isa.png Degenkolb! His train worked perfectly to bring him at the finish line. He’ll wear the first leader’s jersey of the 2022 Vuelta.
There sure will be a big battle for the podium.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2022/Reports/GTM/Vuelta%20a%20Espana/S1/20221224181425_1.jpg

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2022/Micros/mol.png Petit followed the right wheel and can take a satisfying second place. He resists to pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2022/Micros/afr.png Cisse.
pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2022/Micros/ela.png Bouglas and pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2022/Micros/tti.png Banaszek round off the top 5.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2022/Reports/GTM/Vuelta%20a%20Espana/S1/20221224181438_1.jpg

As I said, Degenkolb takes the leader’s and the points’ jersey after this first stage.
Thanks to his win at the intermediate sprint, pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2022/Micros/kng.png Salazar is the best U25, ahead of his two breakaway companions.

Come back tomorrow, for a bumpier, but still flattish stage, to witness whether Degenkolb can keep his jerseys. Thanks to be with us, have a good night.
