Race Profile

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2022/Reports/GTM/Liege/profile.jpg

The 4th monument of the season is upon us. The riders will face almost 250 km of up and down terrain throughout the day. The weather is a bit nicer than at Fleche a few days ago, so let's begin!

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2022/Reports/GTM/Liege/PCM0001.jpg

A 5 man group is quickly away with pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2022/Micros/isa.png Parra Bustamente, pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2022/Micros/eav.png Johannessen, pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2022/Micros/dsc.png Elosegui, pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2022/Micros/pol.png Oldani and pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2022/Micros/mol.png Filutas.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2022/Reports/GTM/Liege/PCM0002.jpg

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2022/Micros/iso.png Verschaeve and pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2022/Micros/gct.png Roson join them.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2022/Reports/GTM/Liege/PCM0003.jpg

Another big group is on the way:

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2022/Reports/GTM/Liege/PCM0004.jpg

17 riders was too much for the peloton to let go, so they brought them all back. A new breakaway of 10 riders made it up the road and established their lead with about 50 km into the race.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2022/Micros/eav.png Johannessenpcmdaily.com/images/mg/2022/Micros/pum.png Zwiehoffpcmdaily.com/images/mg/2022/Micros/yor.png Rodenberg

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2022/Reports/GTM/Liege/PCM0005.jpg

A number of teams from pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2022/Micros/gzl.png Gazelle to pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2022/Micros/zpc.png Zwift have a rider working in the peloton.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2022/Reports/GTM/Liege/PCM0006.jpg

90 km to go, the race really begins now as the riders will face all the hardest hills in short succession. The breakaway has only a 2 minute gap.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2022/Reports/GTM/Liege/PCM0007.jpg

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2022/Reports/GTM/Liege/map.jpg

The pace of the peloton has been quite tame. With 50 km left the breakaways gap has extended to 3 minutes.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2022/Reports/GTM/Liege/PCM0008.jpg

Pouring rain now for the riders with 35 km to go. The pace has gone up and there are only around 40 riders left in the main group. The breakaway is 1'29'' ahead.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2022/Reports/GTM/Liege/PCM0009.jpg

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2022/Micros/lph.png Kelderman is trying a long range attack with 32 km still left in the race.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2022/Reports/GTM/Liege/PCM0010.jpg

Not many domestiques left for the favourites at this point. pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2022/Micros/isa.png Vakoc, pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2022/Micros/gzl.png Lutsenko and pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2022/Micros/tti.png Skujins have decided to go after the Dutchman who is about to reach the original breakaway.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2022/Reports/GTM/Liege/PCM0011.jpg

20 km to go. The gap between the two groups is minimal at best, not sure this early attacking has done much for the likes of pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2022/Micros/lph.png Kelderman.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2022/Reports/GTM/Liege/PCM0012.jpg

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2022/Micros/evo.png Lopez now accelerated over a short sharp climb. pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2022/Micros/gzl.png Lutsenko is on his case though.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2022/Reports/GTM/Liege/PCM0013.jpg

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2022/Micros/gzl.png Lutsenko says he's not doing all the chasing and pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2022/Micros/evo.png Lopez starts opening a small gap on the next climb.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2022/Reports/GTM/Liege/PCM0014.jpg

But pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2022/Micros/gzl.png Lutsenko decides he needs to chase anyway. He has pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2022/Micros/ela.png Koretzky with him. The duo have a 15'' gap over the others. 11 km to go and two more climbs.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2022/Reports/GTM/Liege/PCM0015.jpg

The 3 attackers join up. They have a decent gap over the others where pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2022/Micros/hsk.png Formolo is at the front right now.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2022/Reports/GTM/Liege/PCM0016.jpg

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2022/Micros/ela.png Koretzky couldn't keep up, only the two in front now.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2022/Reports/GTM/Liege/PCM0017.jpg

Meanwhile another group back we have pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2022/Micros/aeg.png De Bie and pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2022/Micros/mos.png Sagan two of the biggest favourites.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2022/Reports/GTM/Liege/PCM0018.jpg

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2022/Micros/evo.png Lopez and pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2022/Micros/gzl.png Lutsenko start the final climb to the line.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2022/Reports/GTM/Liege/PCM0019.jpg

The others are coming back though, led by pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2022/Micros/akm.png Mohoric!

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2022/Reports/GTM/Liege/PCM0020.jpg

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2022/Micros/akm.png Mohoric sails past them under the flamme rouge! pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2022/Micros/zpc.png Yates is the danger man now with perfect position behind the Slovenian.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2022/Reports/GTM/Liege/PCM0021.jpg

But it's pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2022/Micros/dsc.png Turgis and pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2022/Micros/gct.png Eiking who are surging ahead with 500 m to go.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2022/Reports/GTM/Liege/PCM0022.jpg

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2022/Micros/voy.png Kinoshita is making up ground now!

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2022/Reports/GTM/Liege/PCM0023.jpg

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2022/Micros/voy.png Tomohiro Kinoshita with a tremendous victory! Winner of La Doyenne 2022! A wildcard team takes the win!

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2022/Micros/dsc.png Turgis finishes 2nd, fantastic performance for De Stijl. Rounding out the podium is pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2022/Micros/isa.png Vakoc who really likes this race the last couple of years.
pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2022/Micros/akm.png Mohoric looked strong at one point, but he started his sprint too early, he's 4th. pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2022/Micros/duo.png Bobridge not showing his age in 5th. pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2022/Micros/gct.png Eiking places 6th, he's been great throughout the Ardennes. 7th goes to pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2022/Micros/kng.png Gidich.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2022/Reports/GTM/Liege/PCM0024.jpg

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2022/Micros/mol.png Kwiatkowski is 8th. pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2022/Micros/zpc.png Yates 9th, he just ran out of gas with what looked like the perfect finish for him. Finishing out the top 10 is pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2022/Micros/ela.png Koretzky.

Some of the top favourites had a disappointing day with pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2022/Micros/gzl.png Lutsenko 12th, pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2022/Micros/mos.png Sagan 14th, pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2022/Micros/evo.png Lopez 16th and pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2022/Micros/aeg.png De Bie 17th.
