A hilly stage to follow Angliru

David George went on a solo breakaway

His lead was 6 minutes when Jorge Giacinti set off in solo pursuit

George predictably won the first KoM, with Giacinti taking 2nd

But surprisingly, Gomez Marchante attacked to take 3rd

It was a similar story on the next climb - although this time Marchante was not good enough. Ardila beat him to 3rd with ease

Between the 2nd and 3rd climbs, Giacinti caught George

Barredo and Gutierrez Cataluna have attacked behind them but Nintendo are setting a tough pace in the peleton

Giacinti won the 3rd climb, and by the 4th the climb, George was dropped, replaced by Barredo and Gutierrez Cataluna

Giacinti couldnt keep up for long, while Mercado joined the front group

Gutierrez Cataluna took the climb but things really went up a gear on the 5th climb as Plaza attacked from the peleton

Gil, Gesink and Mancebo responded but Gesink chose an inopportune time to drink, and doesnt get away

Then on the 6th (uncategorised) climb, they leave the 3 behind, and there is more action behind

Gesink doesnt drink this time and has attacked strongly to join Mercado, he has a small gap over 9 others: Barredo, Contador, Gomez Marchante, Gutierrez Cataluna, Menchov, Intxausti, Marzano, Castano and Moreno

Mancebo and Plaza do their best to catch Gil - but is it too late?

Victory for Koldo Gil! There is consolation for Mancebo though, the 2007 Vuelta winner takes the race lead - with Plaza just 20 seconds behind him. Gil is up to 4th overall.
