Stage 18 Report

Stage 18 is the second time-trial of the race, this one is a completely flat ride in the streets of Milan. Despite the flat parcours, as Stage 18, this stage favors the GC riders with their powers of recovery over the pure TT riders. And indeed the top 3 favorites are all GC riders. pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2022/Micros/pol.png Bernal has been losing time steadily over the second week so today is his chance to reverse that. pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2022/Micros/evo.png Lecuisinier will be hoping for his second stage win while riders like pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2022/Micros/kng.png Mano and pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2022/Micros/eav.png Hepburn will hope they can upset the GC contenders.

The First 99 Riders

Overview

The first group covered will include 99 riders. Most of the pure TT riders are clustered near the bottom of the GC so they will go early. The last rider in this group, pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2022/Micros/kng.png Mano, is one of the favorites for the stage, He is a little more well-rounded than the other TT riders.

Recap

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2022/Micros/lph.png Sterbini is one of the outside favorites and the first to start so not surprisingly he is the first occupant of the hot seat with a time of 41’11.

But that doesn’t last long as pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2022/Micros/yor.png Viviani goes 12 seconds better. pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2022/Micros/grm.png Norsgaard puts in a solid ride and takes over 2nd, 8 seconds behind Viviani but then pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2022/Micros/mos.png Turek knocks the Italian off the hot seat matching his time in the first two segments and then gaining 5 seconds over the third segment.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2022/Micros/hsk.png Goldstein, a similar rider to Turek, moved into 3rd, 8 seconds off the pace.
pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2022/Micros/eav.png Hepburn is a disappointment for EA, managing only 6th, but his teammate pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2022/Micros/eav.png Pelikan is much better and takes over the stage lead

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2022/Micros/grm.png Bazhkou went close finishing just 4 second off the pace but then pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2022/Micros/dsc.png De Bod went 2 seconds better than Pelikan to become the new leader.

De Bod still led when pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2022/Micros/kng.png Mano rolled off the startline. But the Thai champion quickly made his intentions clear, taking a 3 second lead at the first ime check, expanding it to 6 at the second and finishing with a 9 second advantage.

The Next 72 Riders

Overview

This group goes finishes with another King Power rider, pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2022/Micros/kng.png Smith, who is 18th on GC, exactly 17 minutes off the pace. The strongest candidates for this stage are some of the GC outsiders who hold positions in the 20’s.

Recap

Early in the group pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2022/Micros/pol.png Izagirre took over 2nd, 8 seconds off the pace, and pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2022/Micros/kng.png Bevin raised the possibility of another upset by setting the best time at the first check. The Kiwi couldn’t hold it this time but still finished with a strong time, also 8 seconds off the pace.

But that proved to be the biggest excitement as none of the GC outsiders made much noise. pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2022/Micros/aeg.png Goos was the best of them finishing 6th, 16 seconds off the pace.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2022/Micros/aeg.png Goos passes the 2nd time check.

GC Positions 10 to 17

Overview

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2022/Micros/dsc.png Meintjes, 9th on the GC started the day with about 2’30 over pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2022/Micros/isa.png Bongiorno in 10th. So before focusing on the top contenders we cover the riders between Bongiorno and 17th placed pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2022/Micros/kng.png Roglic, who started the day 14 minutes down on GC.

Among these the best TT riders are pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2022/Micros/iso.png Geoghegan Hart, in 16th And pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2022/Micros/zpc.png Powless, in 11th. Geoghegan Hart should pass pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2022/Micros/grm.png Nesset who was ahead of him by just 2 seconds and maybe gain the 46 seconds he needs to challenge pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2022/Micros/duo.png Almeida for 14th. Powless, who is one of the stage favorites, will hope to gain the 1’02 he needs on Bongiorno to move back into the top 10. pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2022/Micros/gzl.png Karnulin and pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2022/Micros/eav.png Kirsch will have their own private battle for 12th as they start the day 2 seconds apart.

Recap

Geoghegan Hart finishes 40 seconds off the pace in 23rd, not a great time given the times put in by Goos and Bevin but it is 30 seconds better than Nesset and they switch places. But Almeida’s time isn’t great either and loses 1’34 to the stage leader and 54 seconds to the Isostar rider meaning Geoghegan Hart moves up to 14th.

Kirsch easily beats Karnulin to take over 12th.

Then pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2022/Micros/zpc.png Powless becomes the first rider to challenge Mano for the stage lead. But a weak 2nd segment, where he lost 7 seconds, undermines him, and despite a better final segment he finishes 1 second behind Mano. But he does put 1’47 into Bongiorno easily moving back into the top 10.

The Top 9 Riders

Overview

The last group includes the two stage favorites in pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2022/Micros/pol.png Bernal and pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2022/Micros/evo.png Lecuisinier as well as a number of intriguing GC battles. Bernal will hope to pass pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2022/Micros/mos.png Hirt for 7th as he needs just 35 seconds. And pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2022/Micros/brs.png Madrazo is only 39 seconds ahead. But making up the 1’39 Bernal needs on pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2022/Micros/tti.png Sivakov for 5th and the White Jersey is probably a stretch.

Sivakov has another battle to worry about as just 27 seconds separates him and pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2022/Micros/mol.png Galta in 2nd with pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2022/Micros/lpu.png Oomen and pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2022/Micros/ubs.png Barguil in between. Sivakov and Oomen are best among these 4 on the TT bikes and will hope to make gains.

One rider won’t be worrying about his GC position, pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2022/Micros/evo.png Lecuisinier has a lead of over 3 minutes, his entire focus can be on a second stage win.

Recap

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2022/Micros/pol.png Bernal is the first of the group to finish as he passes pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2022/Micros/dsc.png Meintjes before the end. And the Colombian lays down a marker, after trailing Mano by 3 seconds at the second check he gains 10 in the last section to take over the hot seat and put the pressure on. Meintjes loses 2’05 not a great time, but he was not likely to move up or down and is probably locked into GC 9th now.

Hirt loses 1’14 and Madrazo 46 seconds, both solid results but both will drop behind Bernal in the GC although the gaps will be close enough that they can still change in the two mountain stages to come.

Sivakov was just 11 seconds down at the 2nd time check, which means he is minimizing his losses to Bernal and giving himself a good shot at getting back on the podium. At the finish he loses just 17 seconds to his White Jersey rival, 5th on the day at the moment.

1’21 for Barguil. He will drop behind Sivakov. Bernal and Madrazo will both br nipping at his heels in the GC.

47 second time loss for Oomen. He will drop behind Sivakov but holds his own against the rest, he could still pass Galta.

Galta is the last man to finish as Lecuisinier passes him just before the line. More on the Frenchman in a moment. Up until now Galta has been incredibly consistent in this race, but not today. A loss of 2’05 is by far the weakest time among the big contenders. He drops to 5th and has just a 13 second cushion on Bernal. He is probably the big loser from today. It also means pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2022/Micros/tti.png Sivakov becomes the 8th different rider to sit in 2nd place in the race.

And the big winner is going to be pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2022/Micros/evo.png Lecuisinier, not only does he win the stage and extend his GC lead to 4’18 but he generates the largest improvement in the stage time we have seen all day, beating Bernal by 13 seconds.

King Power another big winner as Mano gets his second podium and they put two in the top 10 again and extend their team lead back to 8’16.

No action in the other jerseys.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2022/Micros/pol.png Bernal passes pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2022/Micros/dsc.png Meintjes on his way to stage 2nd and big GC gains.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2022/Reports/GTM/Giro/S18/03.jpg

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2022/Micros/evo.png Lecuisinier passes pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2022/Micros/mol.png Galta and claims his 2nd stage win of the race.
