Stage 16 Report

The riders might be justified in feeling some déjà vu with Stage 16 because the finishing climbs match the final climbs on Stage 11. The Finestre and the Sestriere. In fact, the organizers had to change the flat part from the published route to something closer to stage 11, so the whole stage is going to be familiar. A little shorter this time though at just 196k. A single sprint point breaks the monotony before the finishing climbs.

Interesting Giro fact, while only 3 different riders have worn the Maglia Rosa during this Giro, 7 different riders have held 2nd and 6 different riders 3rd. The full list:

The stage favorites are familiar faces:

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2022/Reports/GTM/Giro/S16/favs.jpg

About 12k gone and surprisingly little interest in the break today. The riders out front are some of the regulars. Up front and 2’20 ahead of the peloton are pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2022/Micros/kng.png Smith and pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2022/Micros/duo.png Almeida. 33 seconds behind them are pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2022/Micros/lph.png Munoz, pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2022/Micros/grm.png Nesset, pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2022/Micros/ela.png Giannoutsos, and pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2022/Micros/aeg.png Goos

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2022/Reports/GTM/Giro/S16/01.jpg

That is it for the breakaway. 150k to go and they lead by 4’29. Evonik, Bralirwa, Moser, ISA-Hexacta and De Stilj on the front.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2022/Reports/GTM/Giro/S16/02.jpg

The break passes the sprint point with 84k to go and a 3’19 lead. Same teams chasing except Moser has stopped contributing. Although most of the work seems to be falling to pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2022/Micros/brs.png Samuel Mugisha of Bralirwa.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2022/Reports/GTM/Giro/S16/03.jpg

The break hits the start of the Colle delle Finestre with a lead of 3’25. The climb is 18.4k at 9.1%, 46k left in the stage. The peloton got as close as 2’19 but then Mugisha hit the wall and the lead expanded.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2022/Reports/GTM/Giro/S16/04.jpg

12k to climb for the peloton. De Stijl massed on the front, but not exactly a group of climbers so they are just maintaining the deficit at around 3’45. Not surprisingly Mugisha was the first rider dropped from the peloton, a handful of others also off the back.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2022/Reports/GTM/Giro/S16/05.jpg

6k to climb for the break. pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2022/Micros/lph.png Munoz is the first one dropped. The front 5 lead by 2’54. pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2022/Micros/dsc.png De Bod leading what is now a 91-rider peloton.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2022/Reports/GTM/Giro/S16/06.jpg

With 3.7k to climb, strong work from pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2022/Micros/mos.png Prado has caught Munoz and reduced the gap to the others to 2’12. pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2022/Micros/mos.png Hirt, pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2022/Micros/dsc.png Meintjes, pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2022/Micros/iso.png Geoghegan Hart, and pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2022/Micros/zpc.png Powless attack.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2022/Reports/GTM/Giro/S16/07.jpg

2.2k to climb, Goos is dropped by the front group. They have 1’11 on Meintjes, Hirt and Powless another 25 seconds on pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2022/Micros/iso.png Geoghegan Hart and another 16 seconds on the peloton which is being led by pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2022/Micros/tti.png Rybalkin, pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2022/Micros/mol.png McNulty, and pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2022/Micros/brs.png Ndayisenga. 68 riders still in the peloton.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2022/Reports/GTM/Giro/S16/08.jpg

1k banner on the climb. Meintjes almost up to the front 4. Hirt and Powless at 26 seconds. The Pink Jersey group at 1’10. Geoghegan Hart has been caught. Ndayisenga the last domestique working and he looks spent, but the group is down to 28, all the top 20 still present in, or in front of, the pink jersey group.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2022/Reports/GTM/Giro/S16/09.jpg

Hirt reaches the front group and leads them over the top. Powless at 28 seconds, the Pink Jersey group now at 57 seconds with pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2022/Micros/ubs.png Barguil and pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2022/Micros/pol.png Bernal on the front.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2022/Reports/GTM/Giro/S16/10.jpg

Smith is dropped over the top by the leaders but will pick up a handful more KOM points. Almeida up to 4th in that competition.

The leaders reach the false flat leading to the Sestriere climb, 15k to go. There are 5 riders up front: pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2022/Micros/duo.png Almeida, pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2022/Micros/grm.png Nesset, pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2022/Micros/ela.png Giannoutsos, pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2022/Micros/mos.png Hirt, and pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2022/Micros/dsc.png Meintjes. pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2022/Micros/zpc.png Powless and pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2022/Micros/kng.png Smith at 17 seconds the peloton at 1’23 with pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2022/Micros/brs.png Ndayisenga back on the front.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2022/Reports/GTM/Giro/S16/11.jpg

Just as Powless and Smith reach the front group Almeida, Nesset and Giannoustsos attack.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2022/Reports/GTM/Giro/S16/12.jpg

12.6k to go, Hirt brings the group back together. Peloton at 1’20 with pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2022/Micros/ubs.png Schir haven taken over the chasing from an exhausted Ndayisenga.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2022/Reports/GTM/Giro/S16/13.jpg

10k banner in sight. Evonik helping the chase with pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2022/Micros/evo.png Blums getting involved. Smith dropped from the break and is caught, the gap to the rest of the break is just 28 seconds. pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2022/Micros/tti.png Rybalkin now on the front.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2022/Reports/GTM/Giro/S16/14.jpg

But then the chase group runs out of rested, willing domestiques and the lead stretches to 45 seconds as the 6 frontrunners start the final climb. The climb is 8.1k at 6%.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2022/Reports/GTM/Giro/S16/15.jpg

Meintjes and Almeida launch the first attack, Giannoutsos goes with them.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2022/Reports/GTM/Giro/S16/16.jpg

After a few kilometers of stalemate, with 6.6k to go pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2022/Micros/brs.png Madrazo launches the first attack from the Maglia Rosa group. He trails Meintjes by 1’55, Almeida and Giannoutsos by 1’33 and the rest of the break by 1’03.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2022/Reports/GTM/Giro/S16/17.jpg

4.3k to go for Meintjes. His lead over the next two is up to 40 seconds. Madrazo has only closed 11 seconds to 1’44. The South African has been aggressive all race, maybe today is his reward. Barguil has attacked the main chase group which is 2’48 behind the leader.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2022/Reports/GTM/Giro/S16/18.jpg

4k to go. Madrazo reaches Hirt, Powless and Nesset. Almeida and Giannoutsos just 24 seconds ahead but Meintjes still has another 1’29. Barguil 53 seconds behind this group, the Pink Jersey group at 1’20, but pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2022/Micros/evo.png Lecuisinier and pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2022/Micros/mol.png Galta are on the move now.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2022/Reports/GTM/Giro/S16/19.jpg

2k for Madrazo he has passed and dropped all the breakaway riders except Meintjes who has a 45 second lead. Barguil has reached the Hirt group and is 57 seconds behind Madrazo. The Maglia Rosa group is 2’12 behind Madrazo, he is making up good time on the GC at this point. The attacks stretched that group but have eased off now, among the GC top 20 only pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2022/Micros/aeg.png Goos (19th on GC) has been dropped.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2022/Reports/GTM/Giro/S16/20.jpg

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2022/Micros/eav.png Kirsch and pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2022/Micros/mol.png Galta attack the Pink Jersey group and get a small gap. pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2022/Micros/kng.png Roglic and pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2022/Micros/kng.png Smith, 14th and 18th on GC have been dropped. They are paying for yesterday’s efforts. Gazelle still has 3 riders in the main chase group so they will be gaining time in the team competition.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2022/Reports/GTM/Giro/S16/21.jpg

1k for pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2022/Micros/dsc.png Meintjes, pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2022/Micros/brs.png Madrazo at 21 seconds but looks like might be struggling.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2022/Reports/GTM/Giro/S16/22.jpg

The full race situation:

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2022/Reports/GTM/Giro/S16/sit1.jpg

The other riders in the pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2022/Micros/evo.png Lecuisinier group are: pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2022/Micros/mos.png Prado, pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2022/Micros/eav.png Rucigaj, pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2022/Micros/isa.png Koshevoy, pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2022/Micros/gzl.png Figueiredo, and pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2022/Micros/tti.png Rybalkin.

500 meters for Meintjes. His lead is 18 seconds. Behind the Barguil group is splitting up with Barguil ahead on his own. Galta now has 1’24 on the Pink Jersey group which is enough to put him back up to 2nd on GC.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2022/Reports/GTM/Giro/S16/23.jpg

A great stage win for pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2022/Micros/dsc.png Louis Meintjes as pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2022/Micros/brs.png Madrazo settles for 2nd, 22 seconds down. He did not have quite enough to catch the South African but will gain GC time.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2022/Reports/GTM/Giro/S16/24.jpg

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2022/Micros/ubs.png Barguil takes 3rd at 1’12, GC gains for him as well. Galta has caught Barguil’s former companions. But Lecuisinier is leading the chase behind and his GC gains have not grown.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2022/Reports/GTM/Giro/S16/25.jpg

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2022/Micros/mos.png Hirt is 4th as Galta and Kirsch pass through the rest of that group.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2022/Reports/GTM/Giro/S16/26.jpg

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2022/Micros/mol.png Galta sprints home for 5th ahead of pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2022/Micros/ela.png Giannoutsos, pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2022/Micros/eav.png Kirsch, pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2022/Micros/grm.png Nesset and pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2022/Micros/zpc.png Powless. All of them 2’01 behind the winner. Now he will wait to see what GC gains he makes.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2022/Reports/GTM/Giro/S16/27.jpg

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2022/Micros/duo.png Almeida takes 10th, not quite as strong as he was yesterday.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2022/Micros/evo.png Lecuisinier takes 11th and leads home the other top GC guys. He loses 54 seconds to Galta. Sivakov, Oomen and Bernal come in 7 seconds later and lose 1’01 to Galta.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2022/Reports/GTM/Giro/S16/28.jpg

In GC terms Meintjes win gains him one place in the GC as he move ahead of pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2022/Micros/isa.png Bongiorno who finished in 17th 3’12 down.

Madrazo up to 6th ahead of Hirt and Bernal, he is just 1’12 off the podium now. Barguil back up to 4th at the expense of Sivakov although the Russian maintains his lead in the White Jersey over Bernal.

Galta’s gains are enough to put him back in 2nd but the gap from 2nd to 5th is just 27 seconds, so expect that to change again. Oomen down to third.

Lecuisinier sitting pretty, still has a 3’21 lead in the race.

Gazelle cuts their teams deficit to 4’34, but in good new for King Power, Smith now leads the Maglia Azzurra competition by almost 100 points. pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2022/Micros/pum.png Demare still well ahead in the points competition.
