Stage 11 Report

Stage 11 is another mammoth; all the climbing is grouped in the last 40k or so but that comes after 200k of flat which will put some pressure on the smaller riders and test their stamina on the climbs. The last 40k includes 2 famous climbs. Not as much for the KOM hunters with just 1 Cat 1 and the finish is Cat 2 rated.

The stage favorites are all the top climbers:

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2022/Reports/GTM/Giro/S11/favs.jpg

The attacks start immediately. So far KOM leaderpcmdaily.com/images/mg/2022/Micros/kng.png Smith has taken a pass, which seems like a wise move. Isostar isn’t going to miss it this time as pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2022/Micros/iso.png Gayral is one of the early attackers. We will check back in once things settle down.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2022/Reports/GTM/Giro/S11/01.jpg

20k gone and a group of just 11 riders has 2’54 on the peloton. They are:
pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2022/Micros/aeg.png Vansevenant
pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2022/Micros/akm.png Van Poucke, Stokbro
pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2022/Micros/grm.png Lastra
pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2022/Micros/gzl.png Dees
pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2022/Micros/isa.png Ferreyra
pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2022/Micros/iso.png Villella, Gayral
pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2022/Micros/kng.png Bevin
pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2022/Micros/lph.png Kelderman
pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2022/Micros/ubs.png Abdurrahman
Van Poucke is closest on GC and he is over 30 minutes down.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2022/Reports/GTM/Giro/S11/02.jpg

98k to go, the gap has been steadily increasing and is now 15’30. No action at the lone sprint point on the course.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2022/Reports/GTM/Giro/S11/03.jpg

By the time the peloton reaches the same point, the lead is down to 14’21 as MOL (Lo Cicero), Polar (Noia), Lierse (Siddikov), De Stijl (Nur Hasa), Moser (Appollonio), Tinkoff (Banaszek) and Bralirwa (S. Mugisha) all join Evonik (Havik) in the chase.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2022/Reports/GTM/Giro/S11/04.jpg

But they don’t press on and the lead is still 14’10 as the break reach the bottom of the Colle Delle Finestre (18.4k at 9.1%).

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2022/Reports/GTM/Giro/S11/05.jpg

15k from the top for the peloton, MOL have decided to push the pace and have the lead down to 12’24. Ahead pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2022/Micros/akm.png Stokbro has become the first rider dropped from the break, no riders have been dropped from the peloton.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2022/Reports/GTM/Giro/S11/06.jpg

8k left in the climb for the break, they are on the dirt section. Both Isostar riders and pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2022/Micros/isa.png Ferreyra dropped. MOL-led peloton at 11’48 and down to 117 riders.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2022/Reports/GTM/Giro/S11/07.jpg

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2022/Micros/mos.png Hirt attacks, 8.5k to go to the top for the peloton, which is still being led by MOL. pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2022/Micros/aeg.png Vansevenant has been dropped from the break.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2022/Reports/GTM/Giro/S11/08.jpg

Hirt gets a gap but ISA-Hexacta and Bralirwa do not want him getting away and commit pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2022/Micros/isa.png Sendeku and pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2022/Micros/brs.png Ndayisenga. Only pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2022/Micros/mol.png Stancu left for MOL with Galta although they have 3 riders further back in the group. No top riders dropped but pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2022/Micros/pol.png Bernal is a long way back in the group behind the 3 MOL riders around the hairpin. Up front pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2022/Micros/grm.png Lastra and pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2022/Micros/gzl.png Dees are dropped leaving just 4 (Van Poucke, Kelderman, Abdurrahman and Bevin)

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2022/Reports/GTM/Giro/S11/09.jpg

The combined efforts bring back Hirt. That sets up another attack with 5.6k to go from pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2022/Micros/isa.png Bongiorno, pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2022/Micros/mos.png Hirt and pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2022/Micros/ela.png Mavrikakis. Peloton down to 52, Bernal back up front where he should be.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2022/Reports/GTM/Giro/S11/10.jpg

2.0k to the top for the break (30k in the stage). pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2022/Micros/akm.png Van Poucke and pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2022/Micros/ubs.png Abdurrahman have gapped the other two. They still have 9’52 on the Pink Jersey group.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2022/Reports/GTM/Giro/S11/11.jpg

Meanwhile, pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2022/Micros/ela.png Mavrikakis quickly cracked but Hirt and Bongiorno have opened a 23-second lead. pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2022/Micros/mol.png Stancu chasing. Pink Jersey group down to 21 riders. pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2022/Micros/zpc.png Powless (5th on GC) has just been dropped along with pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2022/Micros/akm.png Amezawa (19th). Further back is a group with pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2022/Micros/grm.png Nesset (13th), pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2022/Micros/aeg.png Goos (17th) and a lot of the Evonik domestiques. pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2022/Micros/evo.png Lecuisinier on his own now.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2022/Reports/GTM/Giro/S11/12.jpg

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2022/Micros/akm.png Van Poucke takes 16 points at the top of the climb. He is third in the KOM competition. pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2022/Micros/ubs.png Abdurrahman hanging on 16 seconds behind, they can help each other on the descent. The next two are over 2 minutes behind. Hirt and Bongiorno are at 8’56. The Pink Jersey group 1’34 behind them, Stancu has cracked and nobody is taking up the chase. Lecuisinier has almost 5 minutes on Hirt and 6’47 on Bongiorno so he can afford to let the other teams worry about them.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2022/Reports/GTM/Giro/S11/13.jpg

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2022/Micros/isa.png Bongiorno and pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2022/Micros/mos.png Hirt complete the climb with a lead of 2’52. Nobody willing to lead the chase behind. That is enough to put Bongiorno well inside the top 10 and Hirt on the virtual podium. These two still trail Van Poucke by 9’52 so they won’t be winning the stage. Ahead pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2022/Micros/ubs.png Abdurrahman is not great downhill and hasn’t been able to close the gap on Van Poucke.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2022/Reports/GTM/Giro/S11/14.jpg

Soon after though pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2022/Micros/mol.png Galta decides it is time to move. pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2022/Micros/brs.png Madrazo goes with him.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2022/Reports/GTM/Giro/S11/15.jpg

Their lead is 50 seconds and they reach the top before pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2022/Micros/pol.png Bernal takes up the chase.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2022/Reports/GTM/Giro/S11/16.jpg

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2022/Micros/akm.png Van Poucke reaches the end of the descent with a 13 second lead over pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2022/Micros/ubs.png Abdurrahman. From here 7.5k of false flat and then the 8k finishing climb to Sestriere. The next group (Kelderman and Bevin) is still 1’54 behind.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2022/Reports/GTM/Giro/S11/17.jpg

Over the top pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2022/Micros/eav.png Kirsch (12th), pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2022/Micros/ela.png Mavrikakis (20th), and pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2022/Micros/duo.png Almeida (18th) were dropped from the Pink Jersey group, which is down to 15 riders. They may be able to rejoin on the descent.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2022/Reports/GTM/Giro/S11/18.jpg

Bongiorno and Hirt complete the descent with 1’27 over Galta and Madrazo and 2’06 over the Pink jersey group. Ahead Van Poucke has extended his lead to 32 seconds.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2022/Reports/GTM/Giro/S11/19.jpg

Hirt attacks Bongiorno on the flat with 13k to go.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2022/Reports/GTM/Giro/S11/20.jpg

7.5k to go for pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2022/Micros/akm.png Van Poucke, he has started the climb which is 8.1k at 6%. As long as he doesn’t collapse, his aggression will have finally paid off with a stage win as well as moving himself back into relevance in the KOM competition. Behind Madrazo and Galta have eased off and look like they will be caught by the Pink Jersey group. While Bongiorno has weathered the attack from Hirt.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2022/Reports/GTM/Giro/S11/21.jpg

11k to go, pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2022/Micros/mos.png Hirt tries again. His lead over the Pink jersey group is 2’15.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2022/Reports/GTM/Giro/S11/22.jpg

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2022/Micros/dsc.png Meintjes (8th), pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2022/Micros/kng.png Roglic (16th), and pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2022/Micros/iso.png Geoghegan Hart (11th) have been dropped by the Pink Jersey group and are back with Almeida and Mavrikakis. The gap is 34 seconds, pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2022/Micros/kng.png Smith working to close it. Kirsch has dropped back and is with the Powless group.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2022/Reports/GTM/Giro/S11/23.jpg

The Meintjes group rejoins the Pink Jersey group just as they reach the base of the climb. They trail Van Poucke by 11’10 and the Hirt group by 2’55. Bongiorno was able to get back to Hirt. There are 19 riders in the Pink Jersey group:
pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2022/Micros/brs.png Madrazo (9th), Nydayisenga
pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2022/Micros/dsc.png Meintjes (8th)
pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2022/Micros/duo.png Almeida (18th)
pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2022/Micros/gzl.png Karnulin (15th)
pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2022/Micros/ela.png Mavrikakis (20th), Giannoutsos
pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2022/Micros/evo.png Lecuisinier (1st)
pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2022/Micros/iso.png Geoghegan Hart (11th)
pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2022/Micros/kng.png Roglic (16th), Smith
pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2022/Micros/lpu.png Oomen (7th)
pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2022/Micros/mol.png Galta (4th), Stancu
pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2022/Micros/pol.png Bernal (2nd)
pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2022/Micros/tti.png Sivakov (3rd), Rybalkin
pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2022/Micros/ubs.png Barguil (6th), Natarov

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2022/Reports/GTM/Giro/S11/24.jpg

6.6k to go, pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2022/Micros/mol.png Galta tries again as the gap to Hirt has grown to almost 3 minutes. The group in the background includes Powless, Kirsch and many others and has been slowly closing in.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2022/Reports/GTM/Giro/S11/25.jpg

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2022/Micros/ubs.png Barguil follows Galta who quickly opens up a 1 minute lead as the others look at each other. pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2022/Micros/evo.png Lecuisinier willing to risk a game of chicken with pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2022/Micros/pol.png Bernal. The Powless group is just reaching the Pink Jersey group which would swell the count back to 50. PHL may just be waiting for his domestiques.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2022/Reports/GTM/Giro/S11/26.jpg

1k banner for pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2022/Micros/akm.png Van Poucke. His lead is a very safe 1’50.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2022/Reports/GTM/Giro/S11/27.jpg

Behind Hirt and Bongiorno have picked up pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2022/Micros/isa.png Ferreyra, from the break who is working for them. They trail Van Poucke by 7’43 and lead Galta by 2’06, Barguil by 2’20 and the Pink Jersey group by 3’21. pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2022/Micros/brs.png Nydayisenga leading the chase now which has stabilized the gap to Galta. Many of the riders who rejoined with Powless have been dropped including the American himself although Mavrikakis and some domestiques are still holding on.

Just under the 5k banner pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2022/Micros/evo.png Lecuisinier makes his move.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2022/Reports/GTM/Giro/S11/28.jpg

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2022/Micros/akm.png Van Poucke takes a solo victory on Stage 11.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2022/Reports/GTM/Giro/S11/29.jpg

2.5k for Galta he is closing in on Hirt and Bongiorno. He has 13 seconds on Barguil, 57 seconds on Lecuisinier and 1’20 on an 8 rider GC chase group led by Oomen. The other 7 are Sivakov, Karnulin, Bernal, Roglic, Sosnitskiy, Madrazo and Mavrikakis. The rest have been gapped and are losing serious time.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2022/Reports/GTM/Giro/S11/30.jpg

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2022/Micros/ubs.png Abdurrahman takes 2nd, a nice ride but he was 2nd best on the day. Behind Oomen and Sivakov have almost caught PHL. Bernal losing time and Madrazo further back.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2022/Reports/GTM/Giro/S11/31.jpg

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2022/Micros/lph.png Kelderman claims 3rd by dropping pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2022/Micros/kng.png Bevin late in the stage.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2022/Reports/GTM/Giro/S11/32.jpg

1.2k to go as Barguil sweeps by Galta and catches the Hirt/Bongiorno group. Behind the gaps to the top GC guys are:
Galta: +0’17
Lecuisinier: +0’56
Oomen, Sivakov: +1’07
Bernal: +2’09
Madrazo: +2’34.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2022/Reports/GTM/Giro/S11/33.jpg

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2022/Micros/isa.png Bongiorno, pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2022/Micros/mos.png Hirt, pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2022/Micros/aeg.png Vansevenant and pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2022/Micros/ubs.png Barguil open their sprint. Ahead pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2022/Micros/gzl.png Dees has claimed 5th and pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2022/Micros/grm.png Lastra is about to finish 6th. Behind Lecuisinier has almost caught Galta.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2022/Reports/GTM/Giro/S11/34.jpg

Vansevenant outsprints Bongiorno and Hirt for 7th. Minor stage placings for those two in the end although they gained significant time on some GC rivals. Barguil pays for his efforts to bridge the gap.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2022/Reports/GTM/Giro/S11/35.jpg

17 seconds later Barguil just hangs on ahead of pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2022/Micros/mol.png Galta (s.t) and pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2022/Micros/evo.png Lecuisinier (+0’16). Cagey racing from the Evonik rider, small time losses to a few GC guys but he put time into those closest to him and thereby extends his lead in the GC.

14 seconds later pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2022/Micros/tti.png Sivakov outsprints pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2022/Micros/lpu.png Oomen for 13th. The rest of the top10 GC riders will suffer some significant time losses today (to Lecuisinier):

Bernal: +2’17
Madrazo: + 2’36
Meintjes: +3’26
Powless: +4’33

As a result, Galta is now 2nd at 2’40, Sivakov 3rd at 2’43, Barguil 4th at 3’10 while Bernal drops to 5th at +3’44. He loses the White jersey lead to Sivakov.

GC Winners include Hirt up to 7th and Bongiorno up to 8th while Meintjes drops to 10th and Powless to 11th.

No changes in the Points or KOM jersey. Gazelle’s lead shrinks to 15 seconds over King Power in the team’s jersey, Evonik in third, but over 8 minutes down.
