Giro d'Italia - Stage 6
Ulrich Ulriksen
So I hate reporting TT's. It is a pain because it doesn't have a narrative like a race. So I took a different approach here. I found it much easier this way, so unless people really hate it will probably be my future approach

Stage 6 Report

So far pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2022/Micros/pum.png Arnaud Demare has controlled the Pink jersey but today the riders face their first-time trial and it is likely time for a different leader. Maybe it is the day that another Frenchman, pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2022/Micros/evo.png Pierre-Henri Lecuisinier takes control of the race.

The 42k time trial is rated hilly mainly because of a climb to San Paolo that comes about 3/4ths of the way into the race.

The race organizers think that PHL is the favorite to win the Time Trial and pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2022/Micros/pol.png Bernal is the only top GC guy to join him on the favorites list. Most of the others are Hill/TT combos like pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2022/Micros/kng.png Mano and a few pure TT’ers like pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2022/Micros/eav.png Hepburn.

The First 113 Riders

Overview

There are currently 113 riders more than 8 minutes off the pace, in 75th, 8'06 down is GT stage hunter pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2022/Micros/kng.png Smith. This group includes the pure TT riders like Hepburn, pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2022/Micros/mos.png Kukrle and pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2022/Micros/lph.png Sterbini. Their times will give a read on how much climbing matters.

Recap

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2022/Micros/lph.png Sterbini passed the two riders ahead of him on the road to take the first hot seat. But his time didn’t last long as just 5 riders later pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2022/Micros/lpu.png Siddikov was a surprising new leader. His time proved very durable with pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2022/Micros/hsk.png Goldstein and pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2022/Micros/dsc.png Affini coming closest. But he kept the hot seat until pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2022/Micros/tti.png Uran put in an outstanding ride, beating Siddikov by 9 seconds on the relatively flat first section and expanding that by almost a minute on the second section with the climb, before holding on to take the lead by 1’03.

Top pure TT rider pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2022/Micros/eav.png Hepburn came a short while later and while he beat Uran by 9 seconds on the first segment and 11 on the last it was not enough to overcome Uran’s 31 second advantage on the climbing segment. Hepburn slotted into second.

So far it seems like the TT requires solid rides on the flat but the real time can be made on the climb.

The Next 51 Riders

Overview

At the start of the day pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2022/Micros/tti.png Trakhov sat in 25th place on GC, 1’54 behind the leader. In front of him is the group on 1’06 including pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2022/Micros/evo.png Pierre-Henri Lecuisinier behind him are the riders covered in this section of the report.

This group includes stage favorites, pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2022/Micros/kng.png Mano, pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2022/Micros/ela.png Ioannidis, and pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2022/Micros/pol.png Izagirre as well young rider contender pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2022/Micros/mol.png McNulty.

Recap

Uran’s time didn’t last much longer as pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2022/Micros/kng.png Bevin put in a strong ride, gaining small amounts of time in both flatter sections and matching the Colombian on the climb. He finished 23 seconds ahead. That time would prove to be durable as neither Ioannidis nor Izaguirre could come close. pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2022/Micros/kng.png Mano gave King Power a 1-2 but lost time on his teammate in every section to finish 17 seconds behind.

McNulty finished in 9th at 1’26, time will tell how that compares but it appears fairly average. Other solid rides came from pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2022/Micros/mos.png Prado (6th +1’08) and pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2022/Micros/eav.png Rucigaj (5th, +1’05).

McNulty tackles the climb into San Paolo.

The Top 24 Riders

Overview

20 of the top 24 are on the same time, 1’06 down. Of those ahead of them Demare, Grosu and Yates aren’t likely to be competitive. 4th place pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2022/Micros/mos.png Hirt has 8 seconds on his rivals, not enough to make a big difference in all likelihood. So the best time out of the 1'06 group probably takes the race lead.

Recap

It has been raining for a while as the top riders start which might be keeping the times down. The first rider to come close to the best time is pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2022/Micros/aeg.png Goos, but he loses time in every segment and finishes 41 seconds behind Bevin. Similar rides come from pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2022/Micros/brs.png Madrazo (+0’39), pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2022/Micros/mol.png Galta (+1’13), pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2022/Micros/tti.png Sivakov (+1’17), pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2022/Micros/iso.png Geoghegan Hart (+1’00), and pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2022/Micros/zpc.png Powless (+0’43).

While pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2022/Micros/dsc.png Meintjes (+1’40), pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2022/Micros/ubs.png Barguil (+2’14) and pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2022/Micros/kng.png Roglic (+2’47) area all weaker, showing TT skills matter.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2022/Micros/lpu.png Oomen just has a shocker (+2’29).

But in among those pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2022/Micros/pol.png Bernal puts in the best rider so far by a GC rider, he limits his losses in every segment and slots into 3rd on the day 23 seconds off the pace. Making him the best young rider and the top GC rider so far.

With all those riders finished attention turned to pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2022/Micros/evo.png Lecuisinier. Through two segments his ride was strong but not dominant. He lost 10 seconds to Bevin in the first segment and a further 11 seconds in the 2nd segment. And he couldn’t make it up in the last third finishing in 5th 30 seconds down and also 7 seconds behind Bernal.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2022/Micros/mos.png Hirt was the last GC rider on the course but his 8 second advantage was already gone at the first check and he finished on +1’14.

As expected none of the top 3 on GC make an impact on the TT results meaning Stage 6 goes to a surprising winner - pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2022/Micros/kng.png Bevin, who likely benefitted from the rainy conditions after his ride. King Power also take second through pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2022/Micros/kng.png Mano. pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2022/Micros/pol.png Bernal third.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2022/Micros/pol.png Bernal takes over the GC lead ahead of pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2022/Micros/evo.png Lecuisinier and pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2022/Micros/brs.png Madrazo.

Bernal retains his young rider jersey now with a 54 second lead over Sivakov. The Points, KOM and Teams jerseys stay with pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2022/Micros/pum.png Demare, pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2022/Micros/iso.png Gayral, and Tinkoff, respectively.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2022/Micros/evo.png Lecuisinier battles the conditions during the last segment.
