Stage 4 Report

Stage 4 covers 180k from Sanseplcro to Florence, it is once again rated hilly. But it fits more in the medium mountain category than stage 3 with two Cat 1 climbs then two Cat 3s. But after the last Cat 3 climb there are 10k of downhill and flat before the finish.

The stage favorites reflect this mixed profile. With the race leader and the race favorite both in the top 3.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2022/Reports/GTM/Giro/S4/favs.jpg

20k gone, KOM leader pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2022/Micros/iso.png Gayral was the first to attack but the peloton is not interested in a big break and just three riders have joined him: pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2022/Micros/grm.png Brkic, pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2022/Micros/ubs.png Barbio, amd pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2022/Micros/ela.png Stavrakakis. These four have 2’17 on the peloton, none of them have any KOM points other than Gayral.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2022/Reports/GTM/Giro/S4/01.jpg

With 115k to go the break reaches the first climb, the Cat 1 Passo Della Consuma (14.3k at 4.5%). Their lead is 2’32, lots of teams working behind.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2022/Reports/GTM/Giro/S4/02.jpg

Brkic and Barbio do most of the work on the climb, 2k from the top the latter launches the first attack. The peloton is now 3’18 behind.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2022/Reports/GTM/Giro/S4/03.jpg

Brkic sprints away to easily take the points at the top. Gayral second. Back down the climb, pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2022/Micros/akm.png Van Poucke and pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2022/Micros/aeg.png Munoz have attacked out of the peloton.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2022/Reports/GTM/Giro/S4/04.jpg

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2022/Micros/duo.png Vahtra attacks soon after and the full points on the climb are:
pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2022/Micros/grm.png Brkic 16 (16)
pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2022/Micros/iso.png Gayral 12 (29)
pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2022/Micros/ubs.png Barbio 10 (10)
pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2022/Micros/ela.png Stavrakakis 8 (8)
pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2022/Micros/akm.png Van Poucke 6 (17)
pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2022/Micros/aeg.png Munoz 4 (15)
pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2022/Micros/duo.png Vahtra 2 (6)

After the descent the break immediately starts the second Cat 1, the climb to Vallombrosa. 8.1k at 7.4%. All the KOM attackers are back in the peloton which is at 2’59.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2022/Reports/GTM/Giro/S4/05.jpg

80k to go for the peloton, 3k to the top of the climb. De Stijl repeating their tactics from yesterday and setting the tempo. Up front Gayral and Stavrakakis have been dropped. The remaining two have 2’48 over the peloton.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2022/Reports/GTM/Giro/S4/06.jpg

It is neck and neck up the last 2k but in the end Brkic edges his rival and takes maximum points. They already have 2’07 on Gayral. The peloton back to 3’33 with Van Poucke and Munoz again on the attack.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2022/Reports/GTM/Giro/S4/07.jpg

By the time he reaches the top the gap from the front two to pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2022/Micros/iso.png Gayral is up to 2’48 but he holds of for 3rd in the KOM with pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2022/Micros/akm.png Van Poucke another 23 seconds behind and the peloton 24 seconds behind him.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2022/Reports/GTM/Giro/S4/08.jpg

Van Poucke takes 4th and the remaining points go to the King Power domestiques who are now leading the peloton. The Maglia Azzurra standings look like this:

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2022/Reports/GTM/Giro/S4/KOMsit1.jpg

60k to go pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2022/Micros/grm.png Brkic and pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2022/Micros/ubs.png Barbio have almost completed the descent, the peloton is 3’04 behind with Gayral dangling 20 seconds in front of them. 155 riders left in the peloton, King Power getting some help from Zwift now.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2022/Reports/GTM/Giro/S4/09.jpg

50k to go for the peloton as they pass the only sprint point. The front two took 1st and 2nd but Gayral is caught so pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2022/Micros/pum.png Demare is able to grab 3rd place points ahead of pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2022/Micros/hsk.png Grosu. The gap to the leaders is 2’20.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2022/Reports/GTM/Giro/S4/10.jpg

38k to go. King Power running out of riders but they have the lead down to 1’16 and have split the peloton, only 54 riders in the front group. Grosu and Demare the only sprinters still here along with pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2022/Micros/zpc.png Yates. pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2022/Micros/lph.png Kelderman and pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2022/Micros/eav.png Valter have been dropped but all the GC riders are safe. The breakaway riders have 3.5k to go to reach the top of the third climb of the day, the Cat 3 Vetta la Croci (5.6k at 6.6%)

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2022/Reports/GTM/Giro/S4/11.jpg

This time Barbio (6 pts) gets the better of Brkic (4pts) and takes maximum points at the top. The chase has faltered and his lead is back to 2’31. Still 35k and one climb to go. The first chase group is down to 47 riders, their gap is growing over the rest of the peloton.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2022/Reports/GTM/Giro/S4/12.jpg

20k to go for the chase group. The two leaders look doomed now as Huski (Lammertink), Evonik (Lehtinen), and Moser (Neuman) have all taken up chasing. The lead is down to 44 seconds

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2022/Reports/GTM/Giro/S4/13.jpg

13.8k to go and 3.9k to the top of the last climb (Cat 3, 5.1k at 5%). pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2022/Micros/akm.png Van Poucke is trying to close the last of the gap to the breakaway riders so he can have a shot at KOM points.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2022/Reports/GTM/Giro/S4/14.jpg

He can’t do it but pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2022/Micros/kng.png Roglic attacks and quickly bridges up to pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2022/Micros/ubs.png Barbio. These two have just 10 seconds on the 40-rider chase group.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2022/Reports/GTM/Giro/S4/15.jpg

Roglic is shut down and the next attack comes from pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2022/Micros/akm.png Amezawa. pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2022/Micros/hsk.png Grosu and pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2022/Micros/tti.png Trakhov are driving things behind.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2022/Reports/GTM/Giro/S4/16.jpg

Amezawa holds his lead to the top with pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2022/Micros/dsc.png Meintjes and pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2022/Micros/lpu.png Oomen trying to bridge across. None of these riders have KOM points so pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2022/Micros/iso.png Gayral has done enough to hold the Maglia Azzurra for another day.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2022/Reports/GTM/Giro/S4/17.jpg

Meintjes joins Amezawa at the front. They have 17 seconds on the Pink jersey group and are on a short false flat 6.5k from the finish. Oomen halfway between the leaders and the chasers. pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2022/Micros/tti.png Trakhov and pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2022/Micros/mos.png Prado doing the chasing.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2022/Reports/GTM/Giro/S4/18.jpg

Puma make their first appearance at the front as pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2022/Micros/pum.png Madouas helps shut down the attack. 4.5k to go.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2022/Reports/GTM/Giro/S4/19.jpg

If at first you don’t succeed try, try and try again. pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2022/Micros/mos.png Hirt has another go at doing what didn't quite work yesterday. He gets company from Demare, Meintjes, pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2022/Micros/evo.png Lecuisinier, pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2022/Micros/tti.png Sivakov, and pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2022/Micros/ubs.png Barguil.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2022/Reports/GTM/Giro/S4/20.jpg

Not surprisingly they aren't given any gap. With 2k to go Madouas looks to set it up for Demare.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2022/Reports/GTM/Giro/S4/21.jpg

1k banner. Madouas ahead of Demare and Grosu, it looks like a repeat of yesterday. Next rider is pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2022/Micros/mol.png McNulty. Oddly pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2022/Micros/zpc.png Yates again showing no interest, perhaps the presence of pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2022/Micros/zpc.png Powless as a GC man means he is focused elsewhere.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2022/Reports/GTM/Giro/S4/22.jpg

500 meters, Demare has the jump on Grosu.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2022/Reports/GTM/Giro/S4/23.jpg

200 meters. Grosu up along side Demare. pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2022/Micros/tti.png Trakhov and pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2022/Micros/mos.png Hirt the next two behind but they are competing for third.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2022/Reports/GTM/Giro/S4/24.jpg

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2022/Micros/hsk.png Grosu takes back-to-back victories. pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2022/Micros/pum.png Demare settles for 2nd and 4 podiums in 4 stages.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2022/Reports/GTM/Giro/S4/25.jpg

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2022/Micros/tti.png Trakhov edges pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2022/Micros/mos.png Hirt for third. pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2022/Micros/ubs.png Barguil 5th, pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2022/Micros/kng.png Roglic takes 6th.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2022/Reports/GTM/Giro/S4/26.jpg

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2022/Micros/aeg.png Goos 7th and then pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2022/Micros/mos.png Prado, pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2022/Micros/evo.png Blums, and pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2022/Micros/zpc.png Powless complete the top 10.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2022/Reports/GTM/Giro/S4/27.jpg

Demare retains both the GC and points lead although by a slightly reduced margin. Grosu now into 2nd in points. Bernal still best young rider. Tinkoff take over the team lead
