Stage 1 Report

Welcome to the 2022 Giro d’Italia. This year’s race starts in the south with a 200k flat stage from Cosenza to Matera where the first Pink Jersey will be awarded. There are also two category 3 climbs that will determine the first wearer of the Maglia Azzurra.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2022/Micros/evo.png Lecuisinier starts as the heavy favorite to win his first Pink Jersey a few weeks from now. Only the veteran pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2022/Micros/brs.png Madrazo, riding for wildcard team Bralirwa is close to his class and there is still a pretty big gap. This also means the field is wide open for the third podium spot, perhaps young pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2022/Micros/pol.png Egan Bernal will claim his first Grand Tour podium.

But today’s focus will not be on the overall battle but on the sprinters. The race is rated flat although it features a tough uncategorized climb in the last 20k which could impact the finish. There are three top level sprinters in the field and they are the leading favorites but given today’s challenging finish pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2022/Micros/pum.png Demare seems like the best bet.

The stage favorites show up as:

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2022/Reports/GTM/Giro/S1/favs.jpg

20k gone, three riders have established a 1-minute lead. They are pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2022/Micros/duo.png Vahtra, pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2022/Micros/iso.png Gayral, and pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2022/Micros/akm.png Stokbro. It is day one of the race, so lots of fresh legs itching to be out front means multiple attempts to join these three, but so far the peloton is happy with just 3.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2022/Reports/GTM/Giro/S1/01.jpg

163k to go and the leaders face the first climb of the race, the Spezzano Albanese. The attacks from the peleton have only just stopped so their lead is only 1’53.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2022/Reports/GTM/Giro/S1/02.jpg

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2022/Micros/akm.png Stokbro bides his time behind the other two on the climb and easily comes around to take first at the top.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2022/Reports/GTM/Giro/S1/03.jpg

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2022/Micros/duo.png Vahtra takes second ahead of pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2022/Micros/iso.png Gayral, who led most of the way up the climb but could not distance the other two and paid the price at the top. The lead has expanded to over 3 minutes on the climb.

Moving ahead to 90k to go for the peloton. The lead topped out at 4’25 but is now down to 2’47. The three teams of the big sprinters, Puma, Huski and Aegon doing the work.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2022/Reports/GTM/Giro/S1/04.jpg

Vahtra, Gayral, Stokbro is the order at the only sprint point of the race. 77k to go, 2’05 is the lead. Stokbro and Gayral are both U25 eligible so the Isostar rider might have set himself up for a jersey.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2022/Reports/GTM/Giro/S1/05.jpg

Some of us may have forgotten 4th and 5th also award points in a Grand Tour. They go to pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2022/Micros/hsk.png Grosu and pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2022/Micros/aeg.png Groenewegen.

With just under 25k to go Puma and Huski have the break’s lead down to 41 seconds. The break is about to start the climb to Montescaglioso (Cat 3, 3.2k at 7.7% with a max of 16%). From here on in things are interesting, after the descent from Montescaglioso there are a few k of flat and then an uncategorized climb into Matera which is 4.1k at 5.2% and then just 6k of flat to the finish.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2022/Reports/GTM/Giro/S1/06.jpg

1k to climb for the break, they have a 30-second buffer over the peloton which is being led by pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2022/Micros/pum.png Madouas

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2022/Reports/GTM/Giro/S1/07.jpg

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2022/Micros/iso.png Gayral proves the strongest from the break and still holds a 25-second lead at the top. The other two are swamped by the peloton, Gayral will take the King of the Mountains jersey.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2022/Reports/GTM/Giro/S1/08.jpg

4k to the start of the climb to Matera, 14k left in the stage, and Gayral is caught. The peloton split briefly on the descent but is back together now.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2022/Reports/GTM/Giro/S1/09.jpg

Halfway up the climb Huski and Puma still solidly in control. The big 3 sprinters are well positioned as are pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2022/Micros/ela.png Farantakis, pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2022/Micros/dsc.png Bol, pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2022/Micros/akm.png Dainese, and pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2022/Micros/tti.png Banaszek. But the others a little further back. Duolingo are riding for pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2022/Micros/duo.png Van der Sande rather than pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2022/Micros/duo.png Van Stayen but Van der Sande’s positioning isn’t great either.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2022/Reports/GTM/Giro/S1/10.jpg

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2022/Micros/pum.png Mager leads them over the top after pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2022/Micros/hsk.png Conti controlled things for much of the climb. Only a few riders dropped but they include all the breakaway riders, so no young rider’s jersey for them. 5.5k to go.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2022/Reports/GTM/Giro/S1/11.jpg

3.0k to go, the climb has taken its toll on the leadouts and only 1 rider left for each of the main sprinters. pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2022/Micros/hsk.png Meeus for pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2022/Micros/hsk.png Grosu with pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2022/Micros/akm.png Dainese, pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2022/Micros/dsc.png Bol, and pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2022/Micros/zpc.png Yates on his wheel. Good news for Zwift that Yates is getting involved on a flat-rated stage. pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2022/Micros/aeg.png Vansevenant leads pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2022/Micros/aeg.png Groenewegen with pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2022/Micros/yor.png Cullaigh next. pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2022/Micros/pum.png Niu leads pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2022/Micros/pum.png Demare with pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2022/Micros/tti.png Banaszek behind him. Just behind these pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2022/Micros/mos.png Appollonio, pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2022/Micros/isa.png Contreras and pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2022/Micros/duo.png Van der Sande are trying to catch up. pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2022/Micros/ela.png Farantakis dropped badly on the 2nd half of the climb and looks to out of this one.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2022/Reports/GTM/Giro/S1/12.jpg

A series of curves slow things down but with 1.1k to go only pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2022/Micros/pum.png Niu is still out front with the big 3 trying to catch his wheel. The other sprinters bunched up behind them.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2022/Reports/GTM/Giro/S1/13.jpg

600 meters. Niu still leading but the rest coming fast now. Demare in second with Cullaigh on his left and Groenewegen on his right. Grosu is further back but has the inside line.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2022/Reports/GTM/Giro/S1/14.jpg

300 meters, Demare to the lead the 6 behind him across the road are Cullaigh, Yates, Bol, Groenwegen, Dainese and Grosu. Then Banaszek, Niu, Contreras, Van der Sande and a late arriving pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2022/Micros/pol.png Philipsen.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2022/Reports/GTM/Giro/S1/15.jpg

100 meters, pretty much the same, Demare still holding his lead, Yates second, Niu out of it now.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2022/Reports/GTM/Giro/S1/16.jpg

And pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2022/Micros/pum.png Demare can celebrate.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2022/Reports/GTM/Giro/S1/17.jpg

2nd is a good result for pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2022/Micros/zpc.png Yates, Then pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2022/Micros/dsc.png Bol and pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2022/Micros/hsk.png Grosu in 3rd and 4th. pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2022/Micros/yor.png Cullaigh and pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2022/Micros/akm.png Dainese take 5th and 6th

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2022/Reports/GTM/Giro/S1/18.jpg

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2022/Micros/tti.png Banaszek edges pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2022/Micros/aeg.png Groenewegen for 7th, the Aegon rider will be one of the most disappointed today. pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2022/Micros/isa.png Contreras and pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2022/Micros/duo.png Van der Sande complete the top 10.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2022/Reports/GTM/Giro/S1/19.jpg

Demare gets the points jersey as well as the leader’s jersey. pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2022/Micros/akm.png Dainese finishes 2 places ahead of pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2022/Micros/tti.png Banaszek to take the best young rider’s jersey. Tinkoff get the teams lead.
