We head to San Marino for the fifth running of the Coppa Placci, a hilly classic which will feature the best punchers from the CT battling it out to add their name to the honour roll. The race is not too long but features some hard hills all through. Let's take a look at the list of favourites to see who stands a chance to win the race.
| MON | HIL | RES | ACC | Boswell | 71 | 80 | 73 | 76 | Moscon | 73 | 79 | 77 | 73 | Hagen | 66 | 81 | 68 | 73 | Edmondson | 69 | 79 | 72 | 76 | Betancourt | 72 | 79 | 69 | 72 | Dyrnes | 72 | 78 | 73 | 77 | Quevedo | 71 | 78 | 72 | 75 | Vogt | 62 | 80 | 71 | 63 | Schultz | 76 | 76 | 80 | 71 | Hoelgaard | 74 | 77 | 72 | 74 | Budyak | 74 | 78 | 67 | 68 | Hugentobler | 68 | 78 | 69 | 76 | Zordan | 73 | 77 | 72 | 74 | Meyer | 68 | 78 | 69 | 75 | Pernsteiner | 75 | 77 | 71 | 72 | Masnada | 77 | 76 | 75 | 73 | Watson | 65 | 78 | 72 | 72 | Juul-Jensen | 69 | 77 | 72 | 77 | Le Gac | 69 | 77 | 74 | 69 | Laas | 74 | 76 | 73 | 76 | Paulus | 74 | 77 | 68 | 71 | McKenna | 74 | 76 | 72 | 77 |
The previous two winners are back to try to win this race again, and are top favourites to boot! Boswell is a stronger puncher but Moscon is a more versatile rider and both should be joint top favourite to win this race this time again.
A declining Hagen is still strong enough to be among the favourites for the podium in this race. Edmondson, Betancourt and Dyrnes are also among the riders who will be targeting the top three, and they are very similar riders as well. Tafjord have two genuine podium contenders for this race.
Quevedo is a slightly weaker version of Dyrnes, while Vogt does not really have the backup skills to help him with his ability up the climbs.
Schultz is the strongest overall climber in the race, and along with Pernsteiner and Masnada, will be hoping that the climbs become too hard for the pure punchers. The likes of Hoelgaard and Budyak will also not mind a tough race.

No expectations here, again. Le Court maybe with a late race attack would be cool. Then lets get a rider or two or three into the breakaway.

Ambitions are quite modest here. But a top 5/10 would be what we’re looking for.

We're not looking for much here.
Mainly to not be passive and being dropped without trying anything, and maaaaaaaybe some minor points. |

Top 5 goal for us, hopefully the season continues to go Boswell's way. He should be very competitive in this field.
Been a long time since there was a CT race for us, since we don't count cobbles, so the team should be revved up to race.

Top 5 goal for us, hopefully the season finally starts going Moscon's way. He should be very competitive in this field.
Crazy how much of a difference there can be performance-wise between two pretty similar riders (Moscon vs. Boswell). The latter has been flying high, the former has hardly reached a two-digit score after 13 race days...
So it's definitely time to step up for this race he won two years ago. But yeah, there weren't any excuses in Gisborne and San José either, but he still failed. Miserably. I'd not be surprised if "backup solution" Masnada gets our top result here - but I sure do hope Moscon finally does something useful for all the money we throw at him.
Thanks for the preview, Abhi!

I think I've never managed to have two guys on the podium ever, yet alone, a 1-2 placement.
And it surely won't happen now either.
Thank you Abhi, looking forward to this! |

We don't have high hopes for this race. Hopefully, we can be visible in the break and maybe if we're lucky get something from it. |

Shit, shit, shit. I hate PCM20. Most stupid "team" strategy ever by two egoists.
And it confirms once again that energy stats are just random numbers that can be completely ignored.
This whole MG thing is way too random this year to be fun honestly.
I agree that 2 in the Top10 doesn't look bad at first sight, but having one of the division's Top3 puncheurs not getting a single Top5 result in 15 race days, getting repeatedly beaten by clearly weaker riders, just sucks. I wish Pernsteiner had taken even one similar result while racing for us, for example...
Hoelgaard is another such clearly weaker rider, and I've got no clue why he's overperforming so much this year. There's no apparent reason, but he does. Congrats to Tryg, guess that evens out Schlegel's failures.
Thanks for the report, although it was extremely painful to follow in the last few kilometers.

Well can't complain about McKenna, he definitely was active.
These races are all about limiting losses for Glanbia, need a good Jelejah to even out the month
Great report Abhi, and well done Tryg

I'm very content with the 4th place from Pernsteiner. This will certainly help us in the promotion battle.
Thanks for the report Abhi and congrats to Tryg

Was pretty worried there with all those strong riders off the front that we would be fighting for minor placings. But patience proved a decent strategy although we left it a little too late and/or didn't have quite strong enough team. Warbasse 9th isn't bad in his one classic of the year although wonder if he could have been sacrificed to get Boswell closer.
Still goal accomplished and another podium is a good day.
Congrats to Tryg, Hoelgaard has always loved it in the CT.
Thanks for the report.

Congrats to our compatriot Hoelgaard for a phenomenal win!
Great catch by Dyrnes, but unfortunately it did cost too much in the end.
2nd is a good result for us.
Thank you very much for all the images and the in-depth report! |

I don't know if I can agree that Hoelgaard is so clearly a weaker rider than either of Moscon or Masnada. Hoelgaard is weaker than Moscon, and I'd expect Moscon to outperform him across a season, but not necessarily in this sort of race. The one thing I do agree on is that energy stats are virtually meaningless, as anybody who has looked at the impact daily form has on them would realise. But let's take a look at how Hoelgaard compares.
Name | FL | MO | HI | ST | RS | RC | SP | AC | FG | DH | Daniel Hoelgaard | 72 | 74 | 77 | 72 | 72 | 72 | 68 | 74 | 73 | 69 | Fausto Masnada | 71 | 77 | 76 | 76 | 75 | 73 | 63 | 73 | 69 | 71 | Gianni Moscon | 71 | 73 | 79 | 76 | 77 | 75 | 59 | 73 | 71 | 69 |
Slightly more flat and mountain, but slightly less hill than Moscon. All three of these stats would be important in this race: hill for the attacks, mountain for the continous climbing, and flat for chasing/escaping. Hoelgaard also has significantly more sprint than Moscon, which was probably a vital factor in Gisborne (Hoelgaard's only other "overperformance" this season) as that parcour flattened out at the finish. Masnada only beats out Hoelgaard in mountain and downhill, but loses out everywhere else.
I honestly think your lads played this right. Send one up the road to force other teams to try and cover the attack so that the other one gets a free ride into the finish. It might've been better for Masnada to be the attacker and Moscon the follower, but to me it looked like the right idea.
Moscon has been underperforming this year, and that is frustrating. I can sympathise: just look at Schlegel. But the gaps in the CT this season are very small, there is no Thibaut Pinot, so the expected level of dominance might simply be unattainable.
Big thanks to Abishek for the report, and another classic Hoelgaard performance. As Ulrich notes he does seem to love the CT, at least when the racing gets messy: his wins in Rio, Quebec, and San Cristobal all came in very similar fashion. Hopefully his luck doesn't run out!
And commiserations to Bjartne, I was on the edge of my seat as Dyrnes chased Hoelgaard down,

Zordan is doing the job for Bianchi as a leader. Nice to see

Schultz got a good 6th place! Really happy with that performance. I would have liked to see Watson or Edmondson in that front group contesting as well but good to get a top 10 here and a confidence boost for Schultz
