Welcome back to the Czech Republic, to the probably decisive stage number 3, an insanely long individual time trial (nowadays) - 60 kilometers in and around Karlovy Vary! As you can see, the stage layout resembles a distorted 8-shape. The riders first tackle the "upper loop", reaching the first intermediate time check in Depoltovice after 18.5km. The following section will be ridden twice; after the first passage they'll enter the "lower loop", containing the second checkpoint in Chodov (40.9km). While they pass the first split time again, the clock won't be stopped there - only at the finish line back in Karlovy Vary.
While the course has a flat rating, the riders will face a couple of non-neglectable uphill sections - rather long and steady ones, no sharp hills. Meaning that the course might benefit those who are capable on rising roads in addition to pure time-trialling skills - which will obviously matter most!
Those who - according to the bookies - are most looking forward to the stage and a potentially great result are without any surprise the top TTers: Würtz, Phinney and Zmorka top the favorites list, followed by Wirtgen, Mullen and Yatsevich. Ganna, Vlatos, Howson and Dillier shouldn't be ignored, either - and many others will fancy their outside chances!
We had an overview of the most likely GC favorites in the preview of the race; before starting the race coverage, let's recall where they are currently situated in the GC. We also take a look at the current GC Top20:

Let's now find out who of the early starters managed his energy best today, before we'll jump into live coverage with the start of World Champion Phinney!
What happened so far
Currently in 10th position is Dees, with a time of 1h18'33". He's trailing the current leader by 1'50".
With the same time of 1h18'33", we have Foss in 9th position.
Ferreyra is currently 8th with a time of 1h18'10", which is 1'27" behind the leader.
Another couples of second ahead - 10" to be precise, we find Hofer, who posted a final time of 1h18'00".
Number 6 in the standings is Barbio, who was 1" faster than Hofer - with his final time of 1h17'59", he trails the current leader by 1'16".
And that current leader is not Würtz, as the Dane is only 5th in the provisional standings! It looks like the prologue result wasn't just an off-day; instead, he seems to completely out of shape! The Danish TT champion must probably be considered the most disappointing rider to date - with his time of 1h17'31", he trails the best time by a whopping 48 seconds!
Howson isn't currently on the hot seat, either, as the Australian was a mere 3" quicker.
Despite the disappointing performance by their leader, Grieg-Maersk still have a rider on the provisional podium - it's Norsgaard, who had a fantastic day! A great race by him is worth provisional 3rd place, only 22" off the lead! His time: 1h17'05".
Even closer to the provisional lead came Mullen - at least one of the GC favorites delivered so far! The Irish TT champion is only 13" off the lead with this finishing time of 1h16'56".
But who is that current leader? Believe it or not - it's Sütterlin! The German just finished his first TT of the year riding at his normal level, and he's currently leading the race with the best time of 1h16'43"! Manager Nemolito will be relieved of finally having found the right breakfast ingredients for one of his star signings this offseason!
He also leads the provisional GC - where he could get a really nice result, despite his pathetic prologue two days ago!
Before jumping into the live action, let's take a look at the current Top10 at all checkpoints, so we also get an idea about who's currently "hot" out on the road!
Cataford, Razumov and Fraile currently all are on section 2. We also see that Sütterlin had a rather unhurried start before turning it up later on!
Affini is the only one of the Top10 at checkpoint 2 not having finished his race yet.
But now, let's get ready for some live action - and probably the decisive part of this race!
LIVE +++ LIVE +++ LIVE
As promised, we jump in as ITT World Champion Phinney is about to start his race! He won this stage every single time so far - setting the foundation for his six consecutive GC wins!
He was slightly struggling in the prologue two days ago - can he stand the pressure and live up to his billing today? We'll find out in a bit more than an hour!
But we also have a lot of other interesting riders out there - for example Postlberger, who just post(l)ed the 8th time at the first checkpoint - 23'43" (+ 24").
Fraile, who had that 8th time before, in the meantime has reached the Chodov split - 6th time for him, 36" behind Sütterlin.
And Oliveira is also done with the first section, losing 28" (10th place).
Mano was THE favorite for the U25 jersey - but given that he wasn't in the Top10 at any of the splits, he's got no chance against Norsgaard today. Actually, he currently slots into 9th place at the finish - and into 3rd in the young rider standings, dropping behind Ferreyra as well!
1h18'26"
(9th, + 1'43")
Yatsevich is the next 80+ time triallist to finish the stage - and he takes over that same 9th place from Mano.
1h18'16"
(9th, + 1'33")
Meanwhile, teammate Vorobev did a good job on the first part of the race, as he clocks the 7th time in Depoltovice - 14" behind Mullen.
Oh, wow, I guess Sütterlin will start sweating again, as Cataford had a stunning second section, posting the 2nd time at checkpoint 2! Only 2 seconds behind the German race leader - that will go down to the wire!
And Krul, who started just 2 minutes ahead of Phinney, is giving everything he has to not be overtaken - and he has to give a lot it seems! 8th time at Inter 1, just 16" off!
In the meantime, Affini closes his race - in provisional 9th place, of course! A very good performance by the Italian, beating lots of (theoretically) stronger riders today!
1h18'13"
(9th, + 1'30")
And then it's World Champion time - and obviously a new best time at the first split: 23'11, 8" faster than Mullen!
In the meantime, Razumov having a pretty good day so far - 5th time at checkpoint 2, just 20" off Sütterlin's leading time there!
After the World Champion, it's Norwegian ITT Champion Korsaeth who posts a decent time in Depoltovice - 9th place, 23" off.
Fraile loses quite some time on the 3rd part, but confirms his 6th split time by taking provisional 6th at the finish line as well.
1h17'46"
(6th, + 1'03")
Postlberger continues his good ride, he's now 9th in Chodov, trailing the best time by 37".
We can even note down a 7th place for Lammertink, another one of those 80+ specialits! He got through the first part of the race 21" slower than Phinney.
On the other hand, Oliveira has lost some momentum, as he dropped to 11th by the second time check. That's a 46" deficit for him.
Vorobev keeps rolling, moving up from 7th at the first split to 6th in Chodov - 25" behind Sütterlin.
The next one to reach this point with an interesting time is already Krul! He takes provisional 10th place at the 2nd checkpoing, 37" down.
And the Dutchman likely won't be caught after all, given that Phinney obviously posts the best time, but not by a whole lot! The American is just 10" ahead of Sütterlin - 51'20".
But first, let's move over to the finish line, as Cataford is approaching fast! He was just 2" behind the current race leader at the 2nd split - how has that evolved?
Well, it looks like the Canadian ITT Champion overpowered a bit on the second section, as he drops even behind Mullen. Still, provisional 3rd place is a good result!
1h17'02"
(3rd, + 19")
Soon after him, Razumov crosses the finish line, too. He was 20" down in Chodov - and that deficit has doubled on the final stretch! This should all be about energy management, though, as the wind isn't really a factor today - blowing between not at all and now 6km/h, that's surely not significant.
Nevermind, 5th place is still a solid result for the Russian!
1h17'24"
(5th, + 41")
Korsaeth had a good first part of the race, but has now lost a couple of seconds - and spots. He's outside the Top10 at the second intermediate time (13th, + 53").
Lammertink confirms the tendency that riders are now generally slower - at least on the second section! After 7th place at the first split, he's now down to 11th at the second one! He lost 47" so far.
But as we're approaching the Top20, we're also lacking top times on the first part of the race. Dillier isn't able to post one, either - only 20th place, having lost already 39"! Will it again be left to Schäppi to do some miracle for Team UBS?
Not miraculous, but rock solid was Postlberger's ride today. He finishes on provisional 9th place alongside Campbell.
1h17'51"
(9th, + 1'08")
Vorobev has also caught someone - Groenewegen clearly wasn't in a hurry today, having started 8' before... The Russian, on the other hand, was fighting for a Top10 spot in the stage standings - which he provisionally achieves despite dropping a spot on section 3.
1h17'33"
(8th, + 50")
By the way, our cameras unfortunately missed Oliveira - the Portuguese finished 13th, 1'22" down.
Now, before the Top20 reach the first checkpoint, let's again take a look at the current standings:
An interesting picture here! Viennet has just passed the first split - with a disappointing 54" deficit already! In the meantime, Pogacar is on his final kilometers, clearly utilizing the Frenchman's slipstream on his way to a solid U25 result! Hopefully for him, the race direction hasn't noticed!
And then, this man proves that bad sector times only have to do with bad legs, as he shows that anything is still possible - Zmorka posts the 3rd time at chekpoint 1, only 10" down!
But it looks like it was just a very short break in the streak of bad 1st sector results - Wirtgen only is 17th, 35" down!
Goldstein is no better - on the contrary! Only 34th place (+ 53") for the Israelian ITT Champion in Depoltovice!
And even way worse for local hero Kukrle - the Czech ITT Champion loses more than a minute already! 52th place (+ 1'12") - what a horrible daily form he must have!
No horrible daily form at all for Krul, on the other hand, who finishes provisional 9th! Good job!
1h17'46"
(9th, + 1'03")
And then he arrives, the World Champion - Phinney posts the new best time! He's leading at both splits, so it's no surprise that he also takes over the hot seat from Sütterlin! However, the latter gave him a great fight, losing just 12"!
1h16'31"
(Best Time)
Korsaeth is also done with his race - but what began with a strong start didn't end quite as strong. Still, his provisional 12th place is respectable!
1h17'50"
(12th, + 1'19")
White jersey Bissegger did a great job in the prologue - but he's clearly struggling today! Already 1'08" behind at the first checkpoint, he knows that the jersey is gone.
But he's by far not the only one to disappoint right now; Hepburn doesn't do much better. 40th place at the first checkpoint for him, one minute flat slower than the best time!
And finally, Dal Col proves us that good times still are possible, as the Italian posts the 7th time in Depoltovice, just 19" back!
Top10 was probably the minimum goal for Lammertink - and one he only just reaches in the provisional stage standings. After a good start, he lost a couple of spots and is currently 10th at the finish line.
1h17'43"
(10th, + 1'12")
We had almost written off Dillier after the first split already - but the Swiss clearly stepped up on the second part of the race! He just lost 10 more seconds to Phinney, and now is up to 14th (+ 49")!
But then, another top favorite at the first checkpoint! And Ganna... disappoints! And that's a kind expression - 40th place, 54" down - incredible, yet another strong time triallist failing badly today!
The Italian actually posted the exact same time as Viennet at the first split - and while the Frenchman also showed a slight upward trend on section 2, he's still far off the pace. 27th place for him in Chodov, 1'14" back!
But whatever the others are suffering from today, this man is just flying! Being 10" behind Phinney at the first checkpoint, Zmorka rode the second part 15" faster, posting the new best time in Chodov - 51'15"! What's going on here?!?
Unbelievably, even more great news for Los Pollos Hermanos, as Keizer is 4th at the first split! The Dutchman is only 12" down on Phinney at this point - I guess everyone will book the same hotel as the Mexican team next year! But can they pull this through?
With all those headlines, Wirtgen second split time looks much less spectacular - but the Luxembourger also moved up a fair bit in the standings, from 19th at split 1 to 11th (+ 45") now!
While others look to be flying very high, it's a hard landing for Vlatos. Today, he's part of those who don't deliver. At all. 37th place at the first split for him, 53" back. It's definitely a very special race...
And given that it's very special, we wouldn't even be surprised to see Schäppi pull off another upset win - but clearly he won't do it. 56th place (+ 1'09") after the first section corresponds to his "normal" skills.
The same is true for Pszczolarski, another semi-capable time triallist. The yellow jersey is way off the best time, losing already 1'27". It was nice while it lasted, but it won't last much longer for him.
By the way, all the sprinters that were still out there as well were already minutes back at the first split, so the cameras didn't bother catching them. Let's take a look at the final Top10 at the first checkpoint:
What sticks out is the dominance of Los Pollos Hermanos at this point, having 3 riders in the Top 6! Where will this lead to...
As the likes of Bissegger, Hepburn or Goldstein are all completely out of contention by now, let's continue with Dal Col's arrival at the second time check! Having posted the 7th time at split #1, he confirms this and is 7th again! He's just 31" off the lead at this point, and well on track for a Top10!
The same clearly isn't true for Ganna. We thought he might just have managed his energy differently than some others, but this clearly isn't the case. The Italian is 1'29" back already, on an abysmal 38th place at the second intermediate time!
Keizer then shows us how it's made - from 4th place with a 12" deficit in Depoltovice he gets up to 3rd being just 11" down on Zmorka!
And given that neither Vlatos nor Schäppi or Pszczolarski get even close to the Top10, let's take a final look at the standings at this point as well:
Forget what we said about checkpoint 1 - THIS is dominance! Only the World Champion himself is able to break up the Los Pollos Hermanos trio at the second checkpoint! And some manager must really start dreaming, if he isn't completely high yet...
But before we get to the final decision of this stage - and probably the race - let's still mention the solid performance of Dillier, who clawed back after a slow start to finish just inside the provisional Top10! Well done!
1h17'42"
(10th, + 1'11")
But now, the fight for the stage win! Poor Viennet almost gets overtaken by flying Zmorka on the final meters, but just manages to avoid this shame! The Frenchman loses 1'50" to Phinney, which doesn't really matter, though...
Zmorka, on the other hand, had a 6" advantage over Phinney before the stage, so he doesn't even need to take the stage lead for getting the GC lead - but he makes it simple, he takes both! Zmorka beats Phinney by 10 seconds!!!
1h16'21"
(Best Time)
What a fantastic performance by the Ukranian ITT Champion, and what an answer to all those disappointments this year! Wow!
Wirtgen won't be celebrating as much as some Mexican vaqueros, and probably he won't even be satisfied with his result, but after a lame start he at least sneaks into the current Top10. Not a great job, but still much better than a lot of the highly estimated specialists today!
1h17'31"
(9th, + 1'10")
Another rider doing well today was Dal Col - and although he lost one spot to Razumov on the closing kilometers, he still did enough to finish inside the Top10 today by taking provisional 8th place - with only one really fast rider left out there!
1h17'25"
(8th, + 1'04")
And by the way, he almost caught Hepburn in the end, who had as bad a day as Kukrle or Bissegger. Goldstein was slightly better, but won't finish in today's Top30, either - so apologies for not showing pictures of them, but they just weren't fast enough today.
Fast enough - that's clearly the case of Keizer, though! The Dutchman almost caught Ganna in the end - which says it all about the latter's no-show.
Keizer, on the other hand, was 3rd at the second split - but couldn't continue the upward trend and drops to 4th, just some fractions ahead of Mullen!
1h16'56"
(4th, + 35")
While it surely stings a bit to have lost out on a stage podium, at least that spot goes to his teammate Sütterlin - and Keizer actually is on the virtual GC podium now!
Vlatos did a great job in the prologue - but today, just like many other great time triallists, had no legs at all. It's a disappointing 44th place for him - that's not even disappointing anymore, he'll find some other terms I'm sure.
1h18'56"
(44th, + 2'35")
And last but not least, honor to whom honor is due - Pszczolarski took over the yellow jersey with a smart ride yesterday, based upon a strong prologue result. Today's stage was too hard for him, though - but it surely was a great experience for him to ride in yellow!
1h20'15"
(73rd, + 3'56")
He's back! Marlen Zmorka had a rough season so far, with many lowlights - but today is surely one of the greatest days of his career! Beating Taylor Phinney doesn't happen often, especially not in a race the latter won 6 times in a row - a streak that has come to an end today! The Ukranian finally has a 10" advantage - fantastic job!
The US American on the other hand clearly wasn't as dominant as we're used to see him - and for once this wasn't even enough to take the win. But we're sure that he'll be back to take his revenge!
Let's also mention 3rd placed Jasha Sütterlin - just like his Ukranian teammate, he's looking back on a season full of disappointments so far, but he clearly turned things around today! And with yet another teammate Martijn Keizer - taking 4th place, it's a triumph for Los Pollos Hermanos like we've rarely seen on Pro Tour level before! Congratulations!
And those time gaps on today's stage also were easily enough for Marlen Zmorka to take the GC lead! Ahead of the final stage, he's got a 16" advantage over Taylor Phinney - but beware, as long as this guy is within a bonus seconds margin, you can never be sure of beating him!
But it obviously looks great for Zmorka - and even better for Los Pollos Hermanos, with Martijn Keizer being 3rd and Jasha Sütterlin 4th in the current GC! If they can bring that result home - I guess they'll introduce a new national holiday in Mexico!
Kudos also to Ryan Mullen, who's sitting in 5th, being almost unnoticed with all this Fiesta Mexicana! For Cataford, Norsgaard, Dal Col and Razumov, their Top10 positions surely are very satisfying as well, while Wirtgen clearly wanted to be higher up - and big names like Würtz, Dillier or Howson are missing out altogether.
In terms of points standings, nothing decisive has happened yet. Martijn Keizer has taken the lead with his 3rd place on stage 1 and 4th place today, but 30 points are within reach of many riders. Especially Gabriel Cullaigh will eye this jersey, as he's just 5 points behind and has shown yesterday that he's in good shape. Martin Schäppi and Marlen Zmorka tie the Brit for 2nd, but both are rather unlikely to score tomorrow.
His team leader may have failed badly, but Mathias Norsgaard delivered a great performance today! He took 7th on the stage, now sits in 7th in the GC - and has all but locked up the white jersey! His lead over Ioannidis Kiriakidis is 56", while Diego Agustin Ferreyra is already 1'02" back.
With their incredible stage result, it's obvious that Los Pollos Hermanos have a commanding lead in the team standings now! The Mexicans are 2'30" ahead of Grieg-Maersk, who are lacking the top performance, but still did decently as a team. Polar are 3rd with a 2'39" deficit. And by the way, 2nd through 9th are separated by less than 2'30", just to put the leader's dominance in relation...
That's it from a memorable day here in Karlovy Vary! Memorable on one hand because for the first time ever, Phinney didn't win this stage. And on the other hand because of an insane performance by Los Pollos Hermanos, who took 1st, 3rd and 4th on this stage! At least I will definitely remember it - while some others want to forget as quickly as possible... At least there's another chance for a stage win tomorrow, let's see who takes the win back in Praha!
