Lifetime Ban for Dopers!
Shooting Star
I'm sick of reading about riders who have previously used doping, only to return to the sport after a couple of years. The latest is this new Puerta team, where Tyler Hamilton & Co try to redeem themselves and return to their past glories (ie doping glories). Please UCI, quit giving doped riders second chances. They had their opportunity and blew it.

We all want it, and the UCI wants it. But the WADA code won't let them. But they're working on convincing WADA to do it.

So far they've convinced WADA to allow 4 year bans instead of 2 year bans. Starting January 2009, positive test = 4 year ban.

That's a start Smile

Why won't the WADA code let them?

Because those who made the code are as naive as the average fan: they honestly believe that a rider who comes back from a suspension won't immediately dope again.

I really couldn't care less about wheter or not they will dope again. If it was a FACT that every single rider that came back from a doping suspension were clean during the rest of their careers, I still would like them to get a lifetime ban. They're not deserving of second chances.

I dont want them to get lifetime ban. I think that as long as they are clean when they come back and stay clean then they deserve a second chance. Everyone deserves a 2nd chance. Now if after they are allowed back they dope again then I say that they get a lifetime ban. Think about it, most people are dopers and it is only the unlucky ones(or careless) who get caught. So i disagree that they deserve lifetime bans.

You are being overly harsh. If the world was like that then everyone would be banned from everything. It is human nature to make humanly mistakes.

They're old enough to see that what they're doing is wrong.

even people over 20 are allowed to make mistakes. My point is as long as your human and you arent doing something like murdering someone then you can be forgiven. Life will be hell if you can never forgive someone. I bet you have had to be forgiven and have forgiven before.

I agree that they deserve a second chance, but there are so many other things to do on this planet, so they should just take the next best job and start a new life.
If someone is waiting 2 years (or even 4) for a comeback, he must be stupid. More and better riders will come and most of them are doped too. So he cannot stand a chance without doping and with doping, we don't need him near the races.

Life bans are a good thing.

Yes, they may have made a mistake, but it is most certainly a calculated mistake, and the reason they are doing it is because they don't think they will get caught. Not any sort of moral or ethical grounds.

So when they return, they may stay clean for a while, but when that new undetectable doping product comes around, it will be another "mistake"

However, we shouldn't forget that there's also the people 'behind': the suppliers, the managers etc. I think that there should be done a more intensive work on finding the suppliers, so we could one and for all get them sent in jail.

Combined with long-time punishments to the doped riders, it would probably have some effect.

Having a lifetime ban as punishment is a real deterrent, so thats why I think it should be used. People say that everyone deserves a second chance, but if this reduces the number of dopers surely its a good thing for the sport considering all the current difficulties.

I'm completely in support of a lifetime ban

I want lifetime bans for dopers!
If it just 2 or 4 years, maybe they are not so scared of being caught. But if they will be banned for a lifetime, I think the riders wont be risking their career.

I don't think a lifetime punishment will deter anybody from doping. It would serve to aid the feeling of justice among the victims though.
