The report will be brought to you by Nemolito!
Clear skies but a chilly breeze in Denmark this morning as we await this year's edition of GP Herning, a C2 classic that tests skill on the cobbles above all else. It's been held since 2008 with a few brief hiatuses, and has seen some thrilling attacks and worthy winners, Niki Østergaard's win in 2019 is completely obectively the best among them.
Herning has a lot of tough cobblestones, but no hills. In that sense, it's kind of like a a CT Roubaix, though the weaker fields have tended to keep things more together, with a 5-15 rider front group being the usual outcome. Amund Grondahl Jansen won last year, but he's now in PT, so we will see a new victor this time around. And there are plenty of options, as the CT cobbles scene is wide open this year.
Name | FL | HI | ST | RS | CB | SP | AC | Fenn | 72 | 61 | 75 | 71 | 79 | 70 | 69 | Lampaert | 75 | 66 | 74 | 73 | 78 | 60 | 61 | Taubel | 73 | 65 | 69 | 73 | 78 | 61 | 64 | Richardson | 71 | 67 | 68 | 68 | 78 | 60 | 61 | Orue | 69 | 64 | 77 | 70 | 78 | 53 | 58 | Chatarunga | 72 | 67 | 79 | 72 | 77 | 70 | 68 | Vanmarcke | 73 | 63 | 72 | 67 | 77 | 67 | 67 | Insausti | 70 | 64 | 76 | 73 | 77 | 57 | 66 | Saber | 75 | 68 | 74 | 72 | 76 | 81 | 79 | Sinkeldam | 73 | 74 | 72 | 68 | 76 | 67 | 66 | Declerq | 73 | 72 | 71 | 69 | 76 | 66 | 65 | Domene | 73 | 57 | 73 | 68 | 76 | 74 | 75 | Hnik | 73 | 64 | 73 | 69 | 76 | 72 | 67 | Vermeersch | 77 | 70 | 74 | 78 | 75 | 74 | 72 | Manakov | 77 | 58 | 77 | 68 | 75 | 72 | 76 |
CT cobbled classics favorites mostly all come from the same mold this year - strong cobbles, no punch or sprint, moderate energy stats. That means it's hard to distinguish the chances of some over others.
Nevertheless, Fenn should be the favorite. He's the strongest on the cobbles, has good intangibles, and even his mild sprinting ability is better than most of his peers. He also has a solid right hand man in Richardson to shephard him through, though his team may have trouble controlling the race early with four riders being completely useless on cobbles.
Colombini definitely have the best set of options at their disposable, with both Saber and Lampaert on the startlist. The former will be hoping these are race days well used. If he makes it to the finish in the front group, he's completely untouchable in a sprint. But they also have Lampaert in the fold, whose probably the second strongest cobbler in the race. They should be in good shape for a selective or unselective race as long as they play their tactics right.
Taubel and Vanmarcke form another good leading duo for Pas Normal, though both riders are pure cobblers, so they may have to force the issue a little more to use their numbers.
There are other similar options who could easily steal a win as well. Orue will wish the race was longer, and will need it to be selective since he can't sprint at all. Chatarunga will also wish the race was longer, but a less selective race favors him more than most. Insausti could surprise, but his team support is about as weak as they come, so he's on his own.
And going back to numbers, we have to mention the Caja Rural trio of Sinkeldam, Declerq, and Domene. None are top favorites, but with that many outsiders on the startlist, they have a decent chance one will have good form.
We'll see you at the start line!

Hoped Matthews would make the preview, certainly compared to Hnik or Domene. Probably too tough a race for Major to survive to sprint.
It's super fun to be back at Herning. A race Podium Ambition used to dominate with Geraint "King of Herning" Thomas

We don't have very high hopes for this race, but obviously I would be pleased if Merlier or Edmondson managed to get a top 10 |

Well, what can I say. This is a must win for us again. Now with Lampi involved theres two ways for this to go and either has a good chance of us coming out on top. Herning is our second team goal of the year so we need to perform. Best case scenario would be Lampaert guiding Saber to the sprint and getting double points but a win is good enough for me

Insausti could surprise, but his team support is about as weak as they come, so he's on his own.
Ouch. That's tough.
Fair, but tough.
Well, that's one of these race for which I asked myself during planning "did I really chose this race?", and then, it's one of the few for Insausti (and maybe Sarreau) to justify his salary, so let's earn some points!
Maybe that'll even our disasoustrous San Jose.
(And I guess I have to finish my monthly preview before tomorrow, then).
Thank you BBL for the preview and good luck to you all. |

Big, big result for Bianchi, and Caja with a great outcome as well. Congrats!
The Saber/Lampaert double leadership clearly didn't work out as Colombini were hoping for, with Saber just being wasted as a dom. Guess red knows that feeling
Thanks for the report, Nemo, nice race

I can settle with 16th, I guess. I'd obivously taken better, but that's more points than San José, so I'll take it.
Congrats to Bianchi and Caja for the great results, that's quite a performance these team have showed.
And thank you Nemolito for the report, nice read. |

We were in the break which was good. Matthews was pretty invisible and never in contention, not good.

Not the best result for the team. I knew it was a risk but I took it. Lets hope the other races where they join forces turn out for the better!

Monster ride by Poljanec! Probably a bit too agressive in the end as it may have been better to hold back a bit. Still a nice result though.
Also I'm just happy to have my team involved again in cobbled races, even if it's just C2. Thanks for the reports.

First thanks for the report!
Second congrats to all the succesful riders/teams!
Third, like in the gent-wevelgem races we feel dissapointed with our results and the perfomance of the team. We dont expect too much but at least a top 20 results in these races should be possible with our riders. So hopefully in the season we can step up our game.

I expected nothing, and I am still disappointed.
I mean, I know we don't have a great cobbles team, but all of our best riders attacking and spending tons of energy trying to catch the break...jeebs |

What a shame that Ariesen punctured. Nice to see some old faces like Domene and Manakov doing well here!

Wow, what a weak performance, even by Kaislavuo.
We'll be back next year and try again with a stronger squad |
