Volta a Portugal - Stage 5
roturn
pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2022/Reports/PTHC/Portugal/mg22_portugal_05_PCM0254.jpg

Todays stage doesn`t look that difficult on a first view. A bit up and down, lots of long stretched descents, the Cat.2 being at the middle of the stage. A rather flat 2nd half of the stage.

But then, there is the final Monte de Santa Luiza finish climb. 3,7 km length on 5,6 % in average. The first half though is pretty easy with a short flat even. The tough part is the final 1,5 km, when it is really steep and around 10 % for most of the time. Here your legs are tested.

Hard to say if the pure puncheurs or allrounders will like this climb most. For the bookies it`s the pure puncheurs, probably due to the "just" 1,5 km but on steep roads.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2022/Reports/PTHC/Portugal/mg22_portugal_05_PCM0256.jpg

And who knows, maybe it will become a breakaway stage as well? No less than 17 riders decide to give it a try with plenty of different tactics. From small GC fights to later relay stations or just for the stage or KoM competition.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2022/Micros/tti.png Kanerva
pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2022/Micros/akm.png Bravo

Most interesting clearly the KoM leader Bravo in last position as also the puncheur duo Turgis and Kanerva, who actually were high on the bookies list, but both had lost time already.

UBS, Xero, Gazelle, Isostar, Binance are not in there and also seen in the first positions of the peloton. Plus probably some others having missed out.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2022/Reports/PTHC/Portugal/mg22_portugal_05_PCM0279.jpg

The Cat.2 and the next kilometers did lead to some more selection of the break. Bravo couldn`t add any more points to his account as others simply were stronger or fresher.

With 27km to go a group of 6 have opened a gap with 9 following behind. The other 2 are caught.

Turgis, Sobrero, Lastra, Sulvaran, Vanhoucke, Krasts are the front riders.

Behind Tolhoek, Lafay, Cemazar also having a small gap ahead of Jones. Then the others.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2022/Reports/PTHC/Portugal/mg22_portugal_05_PCM0290.jpg

Vanhoucke is not happy to go into the final alongside mainly Turgis I guess. So the Belgium attacks and tries to go solo. His team mate Sobrero, who did most of the team`s work in the group today is dropped at the same time.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2022/Reports/PTHC/Portugal/mg22_portugal_05_PCM0295.jpg

3,5 km and Vanhoucke still has a small gap but Krasts and Turgis are closing while the other two are struggling.

Also the peloton is just 45s behind him and all others are just caught.

Isostar and Tinkoff are doing the pace here. Phinney vs. Skujins?

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2022/Reports/PTHC/Portugal/mg22_portugal_05_PCM0298.jpg

Vanhoucke is caught by the duo but the gap to the peloton is tiny now.

Buchmann and Lutsenko in the first positions with the German already chasing himself.
Mohoric, Bennett, Koretzky and Skujins+2 right behind.

The U25 riders Pogacar and Habtemichael also up there with Phinney, Aular, Oomen, Barguil, Rodrigues, Bettiol, Aranburu, Ackermann, Galta, Paret-Peintre.

Madrazo and Guldhammer still there but a bit less ideal behind the others and some helpers. Same for ELCOs riders Spanopoulos and Mavrikakis.

Even more so for GC leader Wohler at the end of the group just like Kemboi and also Eg.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2022/Reports/PTHC/Portugal/mg22_portugal_05_PCM0315.jpg

2,7km to go and it`s not yet very steep. The group is caught. Buchmann really pushing it now for Barguil.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2022/Reports/PTHC/Portugal/mg22_portugal_05_PCM0317.jpg

1,6 km to go and the steep parts are starting. The riders line up next to each other. Mohoric, Buchmann, Lutsenko, Bennett in first row with Barguil also coming up there now.
Phinney, Pogacar, Ackermann right behind them. Just like Skujins with Koretzky having lost a few spots now.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2022/Reports/PTHC/Portugal/mg22_portugal_05_PCM0324.jpg

1,2 km and the hardest part is about to start. Time for Phinney to move into the lead and higher the pace.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2022/Reports/PTHC/Portugal/mg22_portugal_05_PCM0326.jpg

Immediately some riders lose contact here with only 11 riders being in the first group with Oomen being no.12 and just trying to hang on.

Rodrigues and Aranburu behind him in 14/15 with also Guldhammer, Pogacar, Madrazo, Borisavljevic, Habtemichael, Koretzky, Mavrikakis.

Some big names here, in especially Madrazo of course!

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2022/Reports/PTHC/Portugal/mg22_portugal_05_PCM0333.jpg

300m and the first group is still together and actually Oomen was able to join them again. Phinney still leading, then Skujins, Barguil, Bennett, Lutsenko with Mohoric losing a bit.

Also Guldhammer found some energy again and is not far behind there while Buchmann goes the other direction.

Aular, Aranburu and Ackermann are out of competition being a few bike lengths behind.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2022/Reports/PTHC/Portugal/mg22_portugal_05_PCM0340.jpg

One rider though is losing big time today. Madrazo is the 2nd best climber here, a good time trialist and normally a decent enough hill rider. Today though he is losing time as clearly struggling and the hardest part are the next 600m which will see him lose second for second.

Next to him same goes for Rodrigues, not ideal for all Portuguese fans as also to a lesser extend Pogacar, who is yet to reach his prime. Habtemichael as U25 competition is right behind him.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2022/Reports/PTHC/Portugal/mg22_portugal_05_PCM0343.jpg

On the 10,8 % section it`s Phinney vs Skujins. They are the only riders able to accelerate again.

Barguil looking decent as well but not able to follow them, while none of the others is able to go any faster.

Skujins actually has passed Phinney here and could make it stage no.3 for Tinkoff.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2022/Reports/PTHC/Portugal/mg22_portugal_05_PCM0345.jpg

But Phinney is holding on and keeping the high pace a bit longer so that he now moves into the lead again just before the line...

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2022/Reports/PTHC/Portugal/mg22_portugal_05_PCM0346.jpg

...and takes the stage plus the GC lead.
Skujins still with a strong 2nd here showing that pure puncheurs could have done well today. Mohoric in the backgroup or Koretzky dropped surely on a less strong day.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2022/Reports/PTHC/Portugal/mg22_portugal_05_PCM0348.jpg

5s in the end are given to Barguil, Bennett and Oomen. In especially the Lierse leader with an impressive comeback. He just rode his own pace when Phinney accelerated and did everything correct by passing most of the others again.

Also with them an impressive performance by both Galta and Bettiol while Lutsenko actually is given another 9s as 8th.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2022/Reports/PTHC/Portugal/mg22_portugal_05_PCM0351.jpg

Guldhammer with Borisavljevic at +23s while Mohoric and Buchmann lose 30s.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2022/Reports/PTHC/Portugal/mg22_portugal_05_PCM0354.jpg

Aular +51
Burke +55
Aranburu +59

and then Madrazo and Rodrigues at +1'29. Quite a loss here in the podium fight.

Pogacar at +1'40 beating Habtemichael by 4s with also Kortzky in that group with Mavrikakis at +2'15 for ELCO.
