Volta a Portugal - Stage 4
roturn
pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2022/Reports/PTHC/Portugal/mg22_portugal_04_PCM0205.jpg

We remain on hilly terrain, but it`s less difficult and with several flat sections, so that the officials expect a sprint finish. The last Cat.4 is indeed a very long climb on low slopes with a flat section following. The finish area is slightly uphill but really just a minimum percentage.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2022/Micros/grm.png Trondsen cannot be ignored anymore. The Grieg rider showed his skills on day 2 with a then somewhat surprising win. If the uphill section in the end is tough, more likely pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2022/Micros/zpc.png Ackermann and pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2022/Micros/mol.png Theuns are the strongest riders. Normally though pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2022/Micros/ccc.png Eislers, pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2022/Micros/hsk.png Van Poppel or pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2022/Micros/dsc.png Kemboi are the sprinters to beat.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2022/Reports/PTHC/Portugal/mg22_portugal_04_PCM0206.jpg

4 riders try to beat the sprinters by the early move.
pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2022/Micros/xr0.png Vermeersch
pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2022/Micros/akm.png Bravo
pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2022/Micros/tti.png Kanerva
pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2022/Micros/grm.png Kron

Except for the Xero rider a pretty puncheury group around former KoM leader Bravo, who though later is challenged by Kanerva and Kron for the stage points. This is the order at the first KoM.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2022/Reports/PTHC/Portugal/mg22_portugal_04_PCM0215.jpg

At 32 km to go the gap is down to just under 100 seconds.
We are on the Cat.4 and see Bravo winning it ahead of Vermeersch and Kanerva.
This moves Bravo into the lead again at 23 points vs 22 from Bayly! Well done.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2022/Reports/PTHC/Portugal/mg22_portugal_04_PCM0221.jpg

As said, the Retaxo Cebolais de Cima is a long 13 km climb with 2,3 % in average. Nothing the sprinters should be too worried about.

And also the pace might drop a bit soon as the break is caught with 11 km to go.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2022/Reports/PTHC/Portugal/mg22_portugal_04_PCM0225.jpg

3.2 km to go and De Stijl and Crabbe organize their sprint leadouts.

Turgis - Bettiol - Kemboi sounds pretty solid on punchier terrain.
Hagen - Eislers - Bardet - +1 soundsd clearly weaker.

Kennett and Korosec decide to follow the Kemboi train while most riders are still undecided somewhat in between in this order:
Trondsen!, Theuns, Banaszek, Ackermann, Silva, Ballerini, Van Poppel.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2022/Reports/PTHC/Portugal/mg22_portugal_04_PCM0236.jpg

Hagen though proves to be still the best leadout today and goes into the lead with 2,3 km to go with Eislers behind.
Also Kemboi though has left his train now and sitting right behind.
Kennett, Ackermann, Korosec and others follow in that one line now.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2022/Reports/PTHC/Portugal/mg22_portugal_04_PCM0242.jpg

1,7 km and Crabbe is having a problem. Eislers is in the wind but smart enough to know, that he can`t sprint already. The pace drops and all the leadout was for nothing.
Kemboi, Kennett, Ackermann also "sit up" behind.

Conti not finding his sprinter Van Poppel anywhere and decides to use that situation for a long sprint instead.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2022/Reports/PTHC/Portugal/mg22_portugal_04_PCM0247.jpg

With 1,1 km to go the Italian still leading while Ballerini, Eislers and Kemboi try to get as much of his slipsteam as possible. Most sprinters follow them to that side of the road.

Well basically all but Banaszek. The Tinkoff rider is similar to Kennett one of those top2 sprinters behind the top3 and decides to stay on that road side.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2022/Reports/PTHC/Portugal/mg22_portugal_04_PCM0251.jpg

Eislers, Kemboi, Ackermann, Kennett all in the wind now.

Ballerini dropping back. Van Poppel, Koretzky and Lutsenko in their slipstream.

Banaszek still fighting on the other side. He knows that the road is on his side making a small right turn still.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2022/Reports/PTHC/Portugal/mg22_portugal_04_PCM0252.jpg

And he indeed beats all others after a long 1 km sprint in the wind, probably having some protection due to the barriers.
Big win for Tinkoff and no2 already in this race. This one though less unexpected seeing him being a very decent sprinter indeed.

Van Poppel after waiting the longest was able to go up to 2nd ahead of Ackermann, Koretzky and Lutsenko.

All others dropped behind due to sprinting for longer on the slightly uphill road, which makes Banaszek`s performance even stronger.

This also means, that Kemboi was not able to get the GC lead back today and Wohler remains there.
