Stage 2 is for the sprinters. Well, at least in theory as the final is not that easy with 3 KoMs on the last third. It will be interesting to see how the teams go over the climb.
pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2022/Micros/ccc.png Eislers, pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2022/Micros/dsc.png Kemboi, pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2022/Micros/hsk.png Van Poppel the top favourites, though due to the hills we shouldn`t ignore pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2022/Micros/zpc.png Ackermann or pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2022/Micros/mol.png Theuns as punchy sprinter options.

There are couple more from both types or even going a step further as pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2022/Micros/iso.png Phinney or pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2022/Micros/gzl.png Lutsenko can`t be underestimated in case of a very fast and difficult finale.

4 riders went onto the attack early on but it took a long time until they finally are together, which means, they have spent quite a bit of energy already.

The order now was also the result of the first KoM:
pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2022/Micros/akm.png Bravo
pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2022/Micros/amc.png Wohler
pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2022/Micros/grm.png De Gendt
pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2022/Micros/evo.png Krasts

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2022/Reports/PTHC/Portugal/mg22_portugal_02_PCM0047.jpg

Behind very few teams have ambitions to keep the gap small. Crabbe for Eislers the obvious team seeing he was already successful this year. Also Huski for Van Poppel and De Stijl for Kemboi are visible though.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2022/Reports/PTHC/Portugal/mg22_portugal_02_PCM0049.jpg

A closer look on the final 60km. Luckily for the sprinters it`s not a long climb but instead several shorter ones. Though pretty steep here and there, in especially the two direct Cat.3 climbs.
As it`s a long downhill after the last, it will be either going all-in there if dropped before or trying to recover as good as possible as the way to the line isn`t far then.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2022/Reports/PTHC/Portugal/mg22_portugal_02_PCM0051.jpg

De Gendt taking the Cat.4 with Krasts and Bravo fighting for 2nd.
Their gap is down to 1'45 and still 45 km to go.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2022/Reports/PTHC/Portugal/mg22_portugal_02_PCM0054.jpg

Bravo then takes the first Cat.3 with Krasts and Wohler following.
It`s also about recovery now and De Gendt tried too much here and also went too early thinking the others wouldn`t still pass him.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2022/Reports/PTHC/Portugal/mg22_portugal_02_PCM0059.jpg

On the way up the final Cat.3, the break gets caught.
No chance when Crabbe is sending their strongest here in Romain Bardet as well with Toelhoek helping out for Huski.

They will catch all riders before the line which means Bravo stays at 14 points ahead of De Gendt`s 6 and now Bardet`s 5. So only the Chilenian really was consistent in the KoM fight.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2022/Reports/PTHC/Portugal/mg22_portugal_02_PCM0065.jpg

Eislers, Phinney, Van Poppel, Ackermann, Ballerini, Bagioli, Malecki, Niu. Some pretty fast riders in the very first rows.

Also Kemboi up there in 15-20th position being led by his support Bettiol with several others in the mix as well behind him such as Kennett.

Theuns, Hadi, Havik some of the names missing out here. In especially first is surprising.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2022/Reports/PTHC/Portugal/mg22_portugal_02_PCM0088.jpg

Chernetskiy - Hagen - Eislers
Cort Nielsen - - Bettiol - Kemboi
Conti - Meeus - Van Poppel

3 trains made it here despite the hard finish. A bit over 3km to go but some riders really suffering already as nicely seen on Bettiol trying to close the gap or Kennett trying to close the 4 bike lengths gap to Kemboi.

Behind Eislers it`s Trondsen - Ackermann - Niu - Ballerini. The punchy sprinters, which are looking better still as also Phinney mixing with the sprinters.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2022/Reports/PTHC/Portugal/mg22_portugal_02_PCM0099.jpg

With 1,3km to go it`s Bettiol accelerating but Kemboi is struggling to follow.
Instead it`s Phinney in the hunt for bonus second or even the GC lead?

Ackermann, Trondsen, Ballerini behind with Kennett, who somehow passed all others.

Then Kemboi and Eislers with Van Poppel blocked a bit, instead Meeus in the first rows.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2022/Reports/PTHC/Portugal/mg22_portugal_02_PCM0105.jpg

300 meters and it`s close. Still Bettiol, who basically would have delivered a perfect leadout if Kembou had stayed with him.

Then Hagen, Trondsen and Meeus.

Kemboi coming fast now after recovering with Kennett, Ackermann and Ballerini struggling to find a gap between the top4.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2022/Reports/PTHC/Portugal/mg22_portugal_02_PCM0110.jpg

And while Kemboi was able to move fastest on the other side of the road, he comes in 2nd only. Instead Trondsen had the best position and best legs of the top4 to win the stage. A bit surprising but he actually was one of the top 3-4 punchy sprinters as well on the list.
Kemboi though still takes the GC lead due to his prologue result yesterday.

Kennett up to 3rd ahead of Meeus and Eislers.

Then Ackermann and Ballerini, who likely could have gone faster if not being blocked a bit.

After the top50 today a gap of 43s was given. A quick check and the top top riders were in group 1 but a few notable lost time, e.g.
Aranburu
Mohoric
Buchmann
Storer
Skuijins
Paret-Peintre
Some of these are already known for rather poor positioning skills.
