Introduction
We’re here in Costa Rica for the 2022 Clasico San Jose! The peloton has 212km of undulating terrain ahead of them on the route, with almost constant climbing and almost not a single flat portion of road in sight. From the startline, the peloton will face 18 ascents of 4 climbs in somewhat of a circuit. Last year was the first running of the race, and it was won by a massive outsider in Mathew Holmes of PCT team cycleYorkshire. The riders lining up here in Costa Rica are fighting to be only the second winner here in this race’s history.

The big favourite here in Costa Rica is undoubtedly American pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2022/Micros/mck.png Boswell. He’s had a blistering start the season, taking out the Gisborne GP from a late attack and a stage at the C1 Hong Kong Challenge and is preparing himself for potentially his biggest season yet. He no longer has the yin to his yang in Eiking to contend with as the Norwegian has ascended up to the PCT for this season, whilst he still faces great opposition realistically he should be strong enough to overcome them. He has the most ability in the CT division over shorter climbs and should be able to rely on his teammates like Rodriguez and Fikri Azka to control the race.

The second rider on our list is none other than Italian pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2022/Micros/jur.png Moscon. He has had a trepidatious start to the season finishing 12th in New Zealand before riding an anonymous race in Hong Kong in support of his mate Masnada. He’ll be looking to make amends here and will look to kick start his season and keep the momentum Jura has going into February. The last time he was in CT two season ago, he was one of the best riders in the division and with that pedigree he cannot be discounted.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2022/Micros/bns.png Edmondson is another rider coming to Costa Rica hoping to get their season rolling. He finished 9th in Gisborne, winning the sprint from his large group which tells you the advantage he has over most of his compatriots – speed. He can be lethal going towards the finish line in a small group and will be a rider that the others will not want to bring to the line. He had a good season last year and will have strong support with him here in the shape of Australian road champion Calvin Watson, who on a good day could even take the win himself.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2022/Micros/cct.png Quevedo arrives here after a strong outing in Hong Kong for one of the new teams on the block, Caja Rural. He’ll be looking to continue their strong start to the season here. Ukranian pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2022/Micros/p4e.png Budyak is back hoping to go one better and land himself on the podium this time around after finishing 4th here last season. He likes both long and short climbs so will be one to keep an eye on and will be tough to shake. pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2022/Micros/trg.png Hoelgaard has started the season well after finishing 2nd to Boswell in the Gisborne GP. Like Budyak, he doesn’t mind the longer climbs but also possesses a decent kick which could prove vital. He hasn’t got a lot of support here, but will definitely still strive to do well.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2022/Micros/kmm.png Dieteren7077757066

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2022/Micros/caa.png Vliegen leads the way here for riders with an outside chance at victory. Riding for his former team Bralirwa here last season, he managed to finish 2nd beating Eiking in the process. He didn’t have much support here last season, so being in a similar situation without many climbing friends this season hopefully shouldn’t bother him too much.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2022/Micros/oph.png Le Gac is a strong puncheur and will be hoping for a strong result here for new team Oktal Pharma. pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2022/Micros/vlf.png Mudarra is also a strong and very well-rounded puncheur who will be hopeful of a good result here. He will need to utilise his climbing skills here as he doesn’t have the quickest acceleration of the bunch. pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2022/Micros/gla.png McKenna is quite competent over the hills and along with hiss terrif acceleration should definitely be fighting for a podium place at least. He will probably wish the race was a little bit shorter, though.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2022/Micros/pns.png Besada along with teammate Vogt will be looking to cause an upset here. Bianchi come here with some crazy depth. They have pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2022/Micros/bia.png Le Roux, Svab, Rota, Vendrame and Luchshenko here making them the strongest overall team and also giving them an option for almost any outcome – especially Svab as he is also a decent climber and Luchshenko, who had a great first day out for Bianchi in NZ finishing 3rd in the Gisborne GP. Can they assert themselves as the crabpack of the hills?

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2022/Micros/bdx.png Rodriguez lines up here for Bordeaux where he will hope to make an impact while pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2022/Micros/gct.png Skjerping leads the way for the PCT teams here for Gjensidgie along with pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2022/Micros/kmm.png Dieteren for Kraftwerk. pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2022/Micros/t3a.png Le Court will have to rely on a little bit of luck and good positioning here as his acceleration isn’t the greatest. pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2022/Micros/tlt.png Senyenov is here with Pibernik in support for Trans who have had a fantastic start to the season, and can continue that here with a possible top-10.

Time for another early season almost-Caribbean race! Just aiming to keep up our good showing in breakaways, as calling Le Court an outside is very generous. Lets go get that TV time!

Good luck everyone!

After Moscon's mediocre start to the season, I don't want to get the expectations too high. Still, given his skillset, missing out on the Top5 again would be disappointing; while he can't beat the others with his acceleration, he should easily outlast them given his +3 RES advantage on everyone else on those lists. And he obviously is one of the division's fastest hill riders, shared 3rd with Edmo, behind Boswell and fluky Vogt. So there's no excuse to not get a good result - yet I expect to be disappointed again. Hopefully he had some good talks with Masnada concerning positioning and aggressive riding...

Thanks for the great and detailed preview!

Expecting Boswell to build on his strong start to the season with a win here. However I wouldn't count out Hoelgaard or Edmonson either.

Lots of depth in the Kraftwerk team, hoping for a group of minor scorers.

The preview is right to say the length should affect McKenna but he did OK in Gisborne.

Again, he will target a top 10 but we'll take a top 15

Thanks for the great preview Eden.

While it would be great if Boswell kept up his start not sure that is a reasonable expectation. Hopefully a solid top 10. Not sure our hills support is really strong enough to control this. Don't think this is long enough for STA to really matter, so McKenna is my outsider pick for this.

My theory on Moscron is the game weights ACC in determining the favorites on less challenging hilly courses like Gisborne so he doesn't get preference in a deep field. Not sure where this one fits. I guess Budyak is a good reference point.

I don't expect a lot but I hope that Pibernik can get ok result or possibly a repeat of the result from the Gisborne GP.

Thanks for preview Eden. Smile

Colombini with an awesome season start!
Changed my sig, this was getting absurd.

Thanks for the preview and the report!
I don't exactly know what we hoped here, but it was nice of Wackerman and Doubey to try. Maybe to many similar riders in the team Grin

Sad we couldn't repeat the fairly good result of Gisborne, but time to move on to February!

Congrats to the winner!

Well done Colombini, some of the new guys scoring well and all of them acquitting themselves well.

Poor race for Glanbia, maybe Craddock confused the AI when McKenna should have been clear leader. Nice to see the youth wing go on the attack in the break

Still, a pretty good month overall

TheManxMissile
Shoutout to Dylan Redy for hanging on from the break to take 14th place! And to Matthews & Orosco for continuing our good level of breakaway appearances.

Wtf was that... No more comment needed, Moscon is just completely ridiculous. No clue how that happens from one yet to the other without even an engine change. He should easily beat most of those ahead of him, but it's the 2nd C2 classic in a row where he just completely phones it in.

Congrats to Vliegen, although I hate that result. Looks like luck is more important than stats this year...

Ulrich Ulriksen
Boswell was a 100 meters from a 3rd win. Maybe overconfident after his early season success. But 5th is a decent result and certainly better than others. From our point of view nice to see PCT teams taking some points.

Exciting race and great report by Eden.

So close on the podium. Great team effort.

Edmondson was there in the sprint and good to see Watson attacking. Just didn't have enough. Good top 10 though!

Our home race. Last year we had it as a must win and failed, this year we only wished to show the team colors and acquitted ourselves very well. The young Chumil and Montenegro went in the breakaway as we intended from the start, but the highlight was the local man, Mudarra. Although he didn't challenge the win he was upfront almost until the end and he got a top 10 for us here. I admit I held wild dreams of winning the race, but realistically I am satisfied how things turned out for the team here.

Congratulations to Colombini and thank you for the report!
