Hong Kong Challenge - Stage 1
Nemolito
pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2022/Reports/C1/HongKong/pics/1h01.jpg

And here we are for stage 1! Last year’s winner Beltran is one of the top favourites according to the organisation, and so are Areruya and … Guldhammer! Many KoM-points to gather today, starting with a 2nd cat. right at the start.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2022/Reports/C1/HongKong/pics/1h02.jpg

Strava brought a fun breakaway team here and it’s pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2022/Micros/sva.png Azman scoring ten points ahead of pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2022/Micros/rbz.png Schönberger, pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2022/Micros/voy.png Duchesne, pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2022/Micros/sva.png Hansen and … pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2022/Micros/mck.png Boswell! The American is a very interesting name going for glory in the break, with right behind other interesting names such as pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2022/Micros/brs.png Khederi, pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2022/Micros/bwt.png Pernsteiner and pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2022/Micros/min.png Stuyven!

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2022/Reports/C1/HongKong/pics/1h03.jpg

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2022/Micros/gla.png Curley and pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2022/Micros/bns.png Watson make it ten at the front. A very interesting group with a max lead of 3’30” on the flatter part. Hardest hill of the day now coming up, as the peloton is two minutes behind. From here on until the finish line in 73 km we don’t see too many flat parts anymore. In the peloton, the working teams are Gjensidige, Carlsberg, Xero, Indosat, Zara, Assa Abloy, Cedevita, Volcanica and Jura.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2022/Reports/C1/HongKong/pics/1h04.jpg

Some guys went either too hard at the beginning or are saving themselves for a possible finale, as only pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2022/Micros/brs.png Khederi and pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2022/Micros/rbz.png Schönberger are able to follow the final kick of pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2022/Micros/bwt.png Pernsteiner here. The Zalgiris rider wins it in the end, virtually leading the KoM-classification with eight points more than pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2022/Micros/sva.png Azman. The peloton crosses the top of the hill at 3’, with only Cedevita, Xero and Gjensidige chasing anymore.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2022/Reports/C1/HongKong/pics/1h05.jpg

Some heroic work done by pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2022/Micros/xr0.png Vermeersch in Ronde Van Vlaanderen U23 recently, and now he’s pulling so hard only twelve others are able to follow him, including pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2022/Micros/jur.png Rekita, pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2022/Micros/ced.png Gaudu, pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2022/Micros/xr0.png Areruya, pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2022/Micros/gct.png Roson, pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2022/Micros/ced.png Beltran, pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2022/Micros/voy.png Kinoshita, pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2022/Micros/ziz.png Paez and pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2022/Micros/jur.png Masnada. pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2022/Micros/cdb.png Sulvaran behind this group bringing back the rest of the peloton, who should definitely be alert from here on!

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2022/Reports/C1/HongKong/pics/1h06.jpg

Our leaders are well into the final third of the race, starting the ascent of the third categorized hill of the day with 46 km to go! pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2022/Micros/sva.png Hansen and pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2022/Micros/gla.png Curley have been dropped, making it eight at the front with a gap of 1’40” over the peloton. Terrible positioning by pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2022/Micros/bnb.png Paulinho and pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2022/Micros/bns.png Edmondson sees them in a group behind the peloton

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2022/Reports/C1/HongKong/pics/1h07.jpg

Another strong acceleration by pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2022/Micros/bwt.png Pernsteiner, once again getting beaten on the line. pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2022/Micros/sva.png Azman wins his second KoM of the day, but is still trailing pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2022/Micros/rbz.png Schönberger by four points! pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2022/Micros/min.png Stuyven dropped here. The peloton comes over the top at two minutes.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2022/Reports/C1/HongKong/pics/1h08.jpg

A group of 50/55 riders now known as the peloton at 1’30” of the first group with 30 km to go, and yet again some big names missing out due to bad positioning! pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2022/Micros/voy.png Kinoshita is at 20”, pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2022/Micros/ziz.png Conci at 1’30”, pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2022/Micros/ced.png Beltran at an additional 20” with pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2022/Micros/jur.png Moscon and guys like pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2022/Micros/bnb.png Paulinho and pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2022/Micros/bns.png Edmondson even further behind!

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2022/Reports/C1/HongKong/pics/1h09.jpg

Three hills of third category and the finish ascent to go for our leaders, and pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2022/Micros/mck.png Boswell easily winning this KoM with 27 km to the finish line! Was his tactic the right one?!

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2022/Reports/C1/HongKong/pics/1h10.jpg

With 23 km to go the leading group has been reduced to six, with pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2022/Micros/voy.png Duchesne gone! The first peloton now at 2’30”, as some teams are looking at each other there!

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2022/Reports/C1/HongKong/pics/1h11.jpg

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2022/Micros/bwt.png Pernsteiner gives him a good challenge, but pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2022/Micros/mck.png Boswell still dominant on the penultimate categorized hill! 16 km left, and the peloton is now at 4’! Kinoshita came back there, but immediately collapsed again, and with Beltran at 6’30” of the leader it looks like Cedevita is going for Gaudu and/or Roman! 45 riders remaining in that peloton, but something special is bound to happen here!

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2022/Reports/C1/HongKong/pics/1h12.jpg

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2022/Micros/mck.png Boswell still solo with 7.5 km left! pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2022/Micros/bwt.png Pernsteiner only just behind him, but all former other breakaway riders at two minutes or more! In the peloton, pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2022/Micros/cdb.png Kämna attacks, almost immediately joining the four remaining breakaway riders!

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2022/Reports/C1/HongKong/pics/1h13.jpg

Things are going quickly now! pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2022/Micros/mck.png Boswell is gaining seconds on pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2022/Micros/bwt.png Pernsteiner as they enter the final five km, but quickly losing time on everyone else now! pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2022/Micros/cdb.png Kämna at 1’10”, with right behind him the four remaining breakaway riders and then 25 more riders with at the head of that group pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2022/Micros/xr0.png Areruya, pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2022/Micros/jur.png Masnada and pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2022/Micros/gct.png Kritskiy!

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2022/Reports/C1/HongKong/pics/1h14.jpg

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2022/Micros/mck.png Boswell at 500 metres of the top of the penultimate hill, but pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2022/Micros/jur.png Masnada coming quickly now! 4.4 km until the finish line, and although the gap is still 45”, it’s starting to look harder for the American by the second now!

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2022/Reports/C1/HongKong/pics/1h15.jpg

But he is not giving up yet! He reaches the penultimate top with a 20” gap over pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2022/Micros/cdb.png Kämna, pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2022/Micros/jur.png Masnada and pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2022/Micros/bwt.png Pernsteiner, and another 12” over a group of 23 led by pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2022/Micros/xr0.png Areruya! 3.8 km left!

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2022/Reports/C1/HongKong/pics/1h16.jpg

He enters the final km with a gap of eight seconds over a group of 22, with pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2022/Micros/cdb.png Kämna at the head of that group! Final 500 metres are uphill, but he might have been able to recover just enough in the short downhill section now!

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2022/Reports/C1/HongKong/pics/1h17.jpg

He starts sprinting from far, gaining some metres on Kämna and the others! Kämna looks like he doesn’t want to award someone in his wheel the win!

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2022/Reports/C1/HongKong/pics/1h18.jpg

The American starts cheering with 200 metres to go! Be careful though, as here comes pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2022/Micros/jur.png Masnada!

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2022/Reports/C1/HongKong/pics/1h19.jpg

But he holds on! Break of the day, stage win and yellow jersey! Heroic performance by the McCormick leader!

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2022/Reports/C1/HongKong/pics/1h20.jpg

Top favourite pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2022/Micros/xr0.png Areruya just manages to finish second ahead of pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2022/Micros/jur.png Masnada (3rd) and pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2022/Micros/cct.png Quevedo (4th). The other riders in the top-8 are pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2022/Micros/cdb.png Kämna (5th), pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2022/Micros/sva.png Azman (6th), pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2022/Micros/rbz.png Schönberger (7th) and pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2022/Micros/bwt.png Pernsteiner (8th), who all enjoyed their good positioning for this little sprint after being caught so late. Other riders finishing in the same time are Guldhammer (Carlsberg), Fernandes (Red Bull), Reis (Red Bull), Habtemichael (Xero), Waeytens (Trans), Roman (Cedevita), Dyball (Trans), Brändle (Hyundai), Kritskiy (Gjensidige), Herrada (Volcanica), Khederi (Bralirwa), Petrovski (OktalPharma) and Uwezeyimana (Bralirwa). Near the end, Dunbar and Conci also cracked, meaning several big names lost quite some time today in this very hectic opening stage of the Hong Kong Challenge.
