Stage 5 Report

Stage 5 is the final sprint stage of the race. A little shorter than the rest at 122k and again just one sprint point. Today’s stage goes from the Sealine Beach Resort to Doha Corniche.

The sprinters are our favorites, once again, after two in a row Ewan tops the list.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2022/Reports/PT/Qatar/s5/favs.jpg

100k’s to go, pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2022/Micros/pol.png Brockhoff and pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2022/Micros/akm.png Peng have been out front since the first few k’s, currently they have 51 seconds. Lots of riders trying to join them but nobody allowed away by the peloton yet. Currently pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2022/Micros/yor.png Antonijevic is trying, he has 9 seconds on the peloton. 7k to the sprint point.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2022/Reports/PT/Qatar/s5/01.jpg

Peng takes the sprint over Brockhoff. Looks like Antonijevic will be able to stay away and take the last sprint points.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2022/Reports/PT/Qatar/s5/02.jpg

70k to ride, pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2022/Micros/yor.png Antonijevic has reached the front two and the attacks have finally ceased behind. The lead is at its maximum of 1’46.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2022/Reports/PT/Qatar/s5/03.jpg

40k to go the lead is down to 1’07. Isostar doing most of the chasing with help from ISA-Hexacta and ELCO. They are on the finishing circuit now.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2022/Reports/PT/Qatar/s5/04.jpg

The catch is made with just under 16k to go.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2022/Reports/PT/Qatar/s5/05.jpg

As they pass the 5k banner ISA-Hexacta look the most organized with Ewan sitting behind pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2022/Micros/isa.png Santos and pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2022/Micros/isa.png Harrison just off the Isostar train on the left. pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2022/Micros/iso.png Gaviria needs to get around a couple of other riders to reach pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2022/Micros/iso.png Peak’s wheel (in white) in the middle. ELCO again disorganized as pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2022/Micros/ela.png Coquard leads a long line of sprinters on the right but has only one rider in front of him and a bit of a gap to that rider (pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2022/Micros/ela.png Stavrkakis). pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2022/Micros/lph.png Manninen is a long way forward mixing it up with leading domestiques next to pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2022/Micros/akm.png Anderberg in the Swedish NC jersey.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2022/Reports/PT/Qatar/s5/06.jpg

2.7 k to go, Ewan already down to just Harrison in front of him. Coquard is in the wind 2nd from the left. Mannien and pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2022/Micros/mos.png Appollonio have a choice between Ewan and Coquard’s wheel with Gaviria, pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2022/Micros/mol.png Lo Cicero, pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2022/Micros/eav.png Van der Lijke and pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2022/Micros/yor.png Cullaigh behind them. pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2022/Micros/tti.png Samolenkov and pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2022/Micros/kng.png Hsu also in that vicinity.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2022/Reports/PT/Qatar/s5/07.jpg

1.8k to go Coquard swung far to the right to try and pick up pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2022/Micros/ela.png Stavrkakis’ wheel only to have the Greek immediately swing off. Mannien behind Coquard and pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2022/Micros/aeg.png Groenewegen has found the Los Pollos rider’s wheel with Samolenkov behind him. But further forward on the left Harrison still leading Ewan with Appollonio next. In the middle Gaviria has finally found Peak and has pulled Lo Cicero, Van der Lijke and Cullaigh with him. pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2022/Micros/ela.png Farantakis and pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2022/Micros/kng.png Hsu trying to make up ground just behind.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2022/Reports/PT/Qatar/s5/08.jpg

1k to go the leadouts are done. Ewan, Lo Cicero and Gaviria on the front. Coquard has swung back into the middle of the road and is trying to make up ground. pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2022/Micros/duo.png Van der Sande also in the picture now. pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2022/Micros/fpc.png Kemboi and pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2022/Micros/brs.png Silvestre coming from well back, which might be the right move in this sprint.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2022/Reports/PT/Qatar/s5/09.jpg

600 meters. pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2022/Micros/eav.png Van der Lijke leads. Ewan and Lo Cicero are fading badly and may miss out on the top 10. Gaviria also dropping back, Coquard still near the front. pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2022/Micros/tti.png Samolenkov and pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2022/Micros/brs.png Silvestre making up good ground on the right. pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2022/Micros/lph.png Manninen looks to be in a good position as well.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2022/Reports/PT/Qatar/s5/10.jpg

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2022/Micros/duo.png Van der Sande swings left and has a clear shot while most of the other guys who still have speed are looking for room on the rail where Samolenkov has the lead.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2022/Reports/PT/Qatar/s5/11.jpg

200 meters, Samolenkov is fading and Sivestre sweeps into the lead. Mannien also coming fast has the Finn timed it perfectly again?

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2022/Reports/PT/Qatar/s5/12.jpg

100 meters and Mannien hits the front. The step up in class hasn’t impacted his genius.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2022/Reports/PT/Qatar/s5/13.jpg

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2022/Micros/lph.png Manninen gets his second stage win and retakes the GC lead. 2nd is pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2022/Micros/brs.png Silvestre, his best result of the race. pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2022/Micros/duo.png Van der Sande edges pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2022/Micros/tti.png Samolenkov for the last podium spot.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2022/Reports/PT/Qatar/s5/14.jpg

The next group are neck and neck. pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2022/Micros/ela.png Coquard gets 5th and a big thank you from Mannien for the leadout. Then it is pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2022/Micros/eav.png Van der Lijke, pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2022/Micros/yor.png Cullaigh, pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2022/Micros/aeg.png Groenewegen and pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2022/Micros/iso.png Gaviria. The Colombian loses a lot of bonus points by a half a bike length. pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2022/Micros/kng.png Hsu holds off pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2022/Micros/fpc.png Kemboi for 10th. The Kenyan had the speed but not the space.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2022/Reports/PT/Qatar/s5/15.jpg

The turns on the circuit cause a split and the last 81 riders lose 1’45 taking them out of contention for decent GC finishes. This dampens Los Pollos day as both pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2022/Micros/lph.png Zmorka and pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2022/Micros/lph.png Sütterlin lose time. All of the Tinkoff, cycleYorkshire and EA Vesuvio riders except their sprinters lose time, taking them out of the team competition where they all might have hoped to challenge. Other to TT riders losing time include pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2022/Micros/duo.png Howson and pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2022/Micros/grm.png Larsen. Epilogue favorite pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2022/Micros/akm.png Andersen does make the split for Aker-MOT.

But better news for Los Pollos in the GC where Mannien has 16 seconds over Ewan, 32 seconds over Coquard and 33 seconds over Gaviria. He also has an 11-point lead in the points jersey. Peak still leads the young rider jersey but that competition will be deiced in the epilogue with 23 riders on the same time.
