Stage 4 Report

At 157k Stage 4 of the Tour oF Qatar is a little longer than the prior 3 stages. It also features only 1 intermediate sprint and to further change things up it starts rather than finishes at a sporting venue, in this case a camel race track.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2022/Micros/ela.png Coquard, pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2022/Micros/isa.png Ewan, and pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2022/Micros/lph.png Manninen are just 1 second apart in the GC battle.

They are all on the favorites board.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2022/Reports/PT/Qatar/s4/favs.jpg

23k gone, many riders trying to join the break but the peloton has a very short leash on them today. pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2022/Micros/grm.png Korsaeth, who was at the front of the race for a while, has just been caught, leaving only pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2022/Micros/akm.png Hansen in the lead. He has 16 seconds.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2022/Reports/PT/Qatar/s4/01.jpg

121k to go, 10k to the sprint point. Hansen has been caught pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2022/Micros/yor.png Antonijevic has 48 seconds on the peloton with pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2022/Micros/akm.png Anderberg 10 seconds behind him. They are riding into a pretty strong headwind right now which might be why the break is having trouble sticking.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2022/Reports/PT/Qatar/s4/02.jpg

1k to the sprint, Anderberg is good in the TT’s and would love some more bonus seconds before the last stage but with only two riders out front the peloton is also interested and the lead is just 17 seconds.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2022/Reports/PT/Qatar/s4/03.jpg

Anderberg is not going to make it, pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2022/Micros/isa.png Ewan, pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2022/Micros/aeg.png Groenewegen, pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2022/Micros/ela.png Coquard and pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2022/Micros/iso.png Gaviria contesting the sprint, in that order.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2022/Reports/PT/Qatar/s4/04.jpg

That is the order at the sprint point, Ewan is the virtual race leader.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2022/Reports/PT/Qatar/s4/05.jpg

With the sprint points gone the enthusiasm to be in the break wanes and pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2022/Micros/evo.png Havik and pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2022/Micros/grm.png Eekhoff quickly establish a lead of 1’35. pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2022/Micros/pol.png Kwok trying to bridge across, but not clear if the peloton will let him go.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2022/Reports/PT/Qatar/s4/06.jpg

Kwok is not allowed to go. With 75k to ride the two leaders have 2’25 as the peloton turns into a stretch where that headwind becomes a crosswind. The usual suspects doing the work, Isostar the biggest contributor.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2022/Reports/PT/Qatar/s4/07.jpg

The crosswind section passes uneventfully as the peloton maintained only a steady pace.

13k to go as the catch is made.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2022/Reports/PT/Qatar/s4/08.jpg

9.5k to go and the front of the peloton is very stretched as they are in another crosswind section.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2022/Reports/PT/Qatar/s4/09.jpg

No damage from the crosswinds except some tired legs. With 4.1k to go, the ISA-Hexacta train is well organized on the right. Isostar is trying to get it together in middle with pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2022/Micros/iso.png Peak currently behind pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2022/Micros/iso.png Gaviria. pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2022/Micros/ela.png Coquard is almost on the front with just pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2022/Micros/ela.png Stavrakakis ahead of him and pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2022/Micros/ela.png Farantakis behind him on the right. The other sprinters mostly lining up behind Gaviria. The riders at the front left are the last of the domestiques.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2022/Reports/PT/Qatar/s4/10.jpg

2.2k to go, disaster for ISA-Hexacta as pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2022/Micros/isa.png Ferreyra dropping back interferes with Ewan, as a result pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2022/Micros/isa.png Santos and pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2022/Micros/isa.png Harrison take off without him. Not much better for ELCO as Coquard is already in the wind while Gaviria still has both his lead outs. Behind pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2022/Micros/kng.png Hsu is next to Ewan. pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2022/Micros/eav.png Van der Lijke, pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2022/Micros/tti.png Samolenkov and pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2022/Micros/mol.png Lo Cicero are trying to catch on to Gaviria’s wheel. On the right pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2022/Micros/lph.png Manninen, in yellow, is looking for a wheel to follow with pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2022/Micros/aeg.png Groenewegen on his wheel.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2022/Reports/PT/Qatar/s4/11.jpg

This is going to be an ugly one, still 1.5k to go. Farantakis has got back in front of Coquard to give him some protection. Peak, with Gaviria in tow, has picked up Harrison’s wheel with Santos already toast. Mannien and Samolenkov trying to catch Gaviria. Van der Lijke trying to follow Coquard. Ewan, Groenewegen and pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2022/Micros/duo.png Van der Sande are the next three.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2022/Reports/PT/Qatar/s4/12.jpg

Under the 1k banner, at the front Farantakis still leading Coquard, Peak for Gaviria. Mannien has switched to the other side of the road and is following Van der Lijke. pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2022/Micros/mol.png Lo Cicero and pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2022/Micros/kng.png Hsu the other two in the picture who haven’t been mentioned before.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2022/Reports/PT/Qatar/s4/13.jpg

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2022/Micros/eav.png Van der Lijke, pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2022/Micros/ela.png Coquard and pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2022/Micros/iso.png Gaviria on the front with 600 meters to go. But the riders behind are all moving faster.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2022/Reports/PT/Qatar/s4/14.jpg

400 meters. Van der Lijke in the lead on the left but Mannien and Samolenkov coming very fast through the middle. Coquard appears to be out of it.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2022/Reports/PT/Qatar/s4/15.jpg

300 meters, Mannien versus Gaviria, Van der Lijke is done.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2022/Reports/PT/Qatar/s4/16.jpg

100 meters, Mannien has the edge on Gaviria but pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2022/Micros/isa.png Ewan has turned on the after burners and is eating up ground.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2022/Reports/PT/Qatar/s4/17.jpg

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2022/Micros/isa.png Ewan goes back to back, the hitch in his leadout saves him from going too early. He will take the race lead. pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2022/Micros/lph.png Manninen second, and drops to 2nd in the GC, pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2022/Micros/iso.png Gaviria third. A fast closing pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2022/Micros/aeg.png Groenewegen takes fourth.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2022/Reports/PT/Qatar/s4/18.jpg

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2022/Micros/kng.png Hsu and pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2022/Micros/duo.png Van der Sande snatch 5th and 6th from a fading pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2022/Micros/tti.png Samolenkov. pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2022/Micros/eav.png Van der Lijke drops to 8th. pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2022/Micros/mol.png Lo Cicero 9th.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2022/Reports/PT/Qatar/s4/19.jpg

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2022/Micros/ela.png Coquard pays for his disorganized sprint train today and drops to 10th. He will also drop in the GC.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2022/Reports/PT/Qatar/s4/20.jpg

In the GC Ewan’s lead is 9 seconds, Gaviria is 3rd at 19 seconds, Coquard 4th at 26 seconds and Groenewegen 5th at 28. Same top 5 in the points competition. Peak retakes the young rider lead.
