Stage 3 Report

The organizers of the Tour of Qatar got creative for stage 3, it is a 140kish flat stage that does not end at a sporting venue. Although I suppose it could end at a sporting venue in Madinat Al Shamal and they just aren’t telling us.

Yesterday a brutal late tempo from Isostar disrupted the other sprinter’s preparation and Gaviria grabbed his first win of the season.

Today he is joined by Ewan and Grosu as the top favorites:

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2022/Reports/PT/Qatar/s3/favs.jpg

The peloton slow to get organized today and pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2022/Micros/yor.png Antonijevic and pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2022/Micros/akm.png Anderberg get 1’34 with another 9 riders at 1 minute before the peloton starts chasing. Moser, Aegon and Isostar are doing the work now.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2022/Reports/PT/Qatar/s3/01.jpg

As the 9 rider group is caught, two of them, pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2022/Micros/lph.png Sterbini and pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2022/Micros/hsk.png Van den Berg counter attack.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2022/Reports/PT/Qatar/s3/02.jpg

Van den Berg makes it up to the front duo, Sterbini doesn’t. With 115k to go they have 1’08 but more attacks coming from the peloton.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2022/Reports/PT/Qatar/s3/03.jpg

The continued high pace results in pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2022/Micros/yor.png Antonijevic being dropped by the other two attackers. He is caught by the peloton but pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2022/Micros/kng.png Leung bridges across to replace him up front. 2k to the first sprint point the three leaders (Anderberg, Van den Berg and Leung) have 2’06. None of them are U25 eligible so that competition will remain in the hands of the peloton.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2022/Reports/PT/Qatar/s3/04.jpg

Anderberg is the strongest and easily takes the sprint ahead of van den Berg. Leung will be strong in the epilogue so every second is valuable to him.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2022/Reports/PT/Qatar/s3/05.jpg

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2022/Micros/hsk.png Van den Berg takes the 2nd sprint, pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2022/Micros/akm.png Anderberg 2nd. They have 1’46 over the peloton with 60k to go.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2022/Reports/PT/Qatar/s3/06.jpg

13k to go and the breakaway is over. Isostar, ELCO and ISA-Hexacta again doing most of the work. Bib 61 is pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2022/Micros/brs.png Madrazo, the legendary rider not having any trouble staying out of the wind among all the big roulers.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2022/Reports/PT/Qatar/s3/07.jpg

Just over 5k to go, pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2022/Micros/iso.png Cherkasov just pulling off. The Isostar train is well positioned, pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2022/Micros/iso.png Peak, in White, has pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2022/Micros/iso.png Gaviria, in Green, behind him and pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2022/Micros/iso.png Rickaert ahead of him. But both ELCO and ISA-Hexacta are missing one rider from their trains, it might be too late now.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2022/Reports/PT/Qatar/s3/08.jpg

3k to go. Rickaert has launched for Isostar in the middle of the road, Gaviria needs to close a small gap to Peak. With pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2022/Micros/isa.png Santos missing pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2022/Micros/isa.png Sagiv has filled in as the first rider in the ISA-Hexacta train, then pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2022/Micros/isa.png Harrison and pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2022/Micros/isa.png Ewan. pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2022/Micros/ela.png Coquard has given up on his train and is going for Gaviria’s wheel. Behind him are pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2022/Micros/yor.png Cullaigh, pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2022/Micros/lph.png Manninen and pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2022/Micros/mos.png Appollonio. Behind them fighting for position on the left are pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2022/Micros/eav.png Van der Lijke, pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2022/Micros/mol.png Lo Cicero, pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2022/Micros/kng.png Hsu, pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2022/Micros/brs.png Silvestre, and pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2022/Micros/duo.png Van der Sande. pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2022/Micros/tti.png Samolenkov and pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2022/Micros/aeg.png Groenewegen are trying to catch Ewan’s wheel. The Polar rider going for a long sprint next to the Isostar train is pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2022/Micros/pol.png Brockhoff

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2022/Reports/PT/Qatar/s3/09.jpg

1.7k to go and Peak is now in the wind. Ewan appears to be giving up on his train and trying to find a wheel in the other train, which is forcing Samolenkov and Groenewegen to do the same.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2022/Reports/PT/Qatar/s3/10.jpg

Approaching 1k. Ewan changes his mind again and catches on to Harrison’s wheel. pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2022/Micros/ela.png Coquard, pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2022/Micros/yor.png Cullaigh and pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2022/Micros/tti.png Samolenkov the next three behind Gaviria. Then pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2022/Micros/aeg.png Groenewegen, pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2022/Micros/mos.png Appollonio and pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2022/Micros/lph.png Manninen.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2022/Reports/PT/Qatar/s3/11.jpg

700 meters and Gaviria and Ewan launch. Coquard also beginning to move. The next 5 are the same. pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2022/Micros/ela.png Farantakis sprinting for himself is next and then Sivestre, Hsu and Van de Lijke fighting to get back in the picture.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2022/Reports/PT/Qatar/s3/12.jpg

400 meters, Ewan in front. pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2022/Micros/yor.png Cullaigh is getting close now.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2022/Reports/PT/Qatar/s3/13.jpg

100 meters Ewan has about ¾ of a bike ahead of Coquard. Gaviria fading, he might have done a little too much too soon today.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2022/Reports/PT/Qatar/s3/14.jpg

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2022/Micros/isa.png Ewan gets his first win for ISA-Hexacta. Then pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2022/Micros/ela.png Coquard and pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2022/Micros/tti.png Samolenkov.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2022/Reports/PT/Qatar/s3/15.jpg

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2022/Micros/yor.png Cullaigh holds off pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2022/Micros/aeg.png Groenewegen for 4th. Then pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2022/Micros/mos.png Appollonio (6th), pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2022/Micros/lph.png Manninen (7th) and pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2022/Micros/iso.png Gaviria (8th). Bad day for the Colombian as he ends up losing time to the Los Pollos rider.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2022/Reports/PT/Qatar/s3/16.jpg

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2022/Micros/brs.png Silvestre and pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2022/Micros/eav.png Van der Lijke take the last bonus seconds.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2022/Reports/PT/Qatar/s3/17.jpg

Mannien gained time on Gaviria but his lead over Coquard and Ewan shrinks to 1 second. Coquard also takes the points jersey lead by 2 points. A nice finish by pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2022/Micros/ela.png Kiriakidis gives him the U25 lead on placings.
