Stage 1 Report

Stage 1 of the Tour of Qatar is 144k from the Barzan Towers to the Doha Golf Club. Two sprint points along the way, with none of the main sprinters qualifying for the U25 competition the breakaways might be key to that competition.

The stage favorites are all the riders you would expect

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2022/Reports/PT/Qatar/s1/favs.jpg

10k in, a lot of attacks and nobody really able to get a gap. Current attackers pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2022/Micros/akm.png Peng and pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2022/Micros/gzl.png Mundle are just 16 seconds clear of the pack.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2022/Reports/PT/Qatar/s1/01.jpg

10k later those two have extended their lead to 1 minute. ISA-Hexacta and Isostar have been shutting down additional attackers.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2022/Reports/PT/Qatar/s1/02.jpg

At the first sprint with 111k to go Peng beats Mundle. Peloton at 1’32. They will contest the sprint as there are points for 3rd place.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2022/Reports/PT/Qatar/s1/03.jpg

From left to right the sprinters interested in that 1 second bonus are: pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2022/Micros/eav.png Van der Lijke, pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2022/Micros/aeg.png Groenewegen, pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2022/Micros/ela.png Coquard, pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2022/Micros/isa.png Ewan, pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2022/Micros/tti.png Samolenkov, and pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2022/Micros/iso.png Gaviria.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2022/Reports/PT/Qatar/s1/04.jpg

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2022/Micros/ela.png Coquard gets it, he will be pleased to take first blood.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2022/Reports/PT/Qatar/s1/05.jpg

68k to ride for the peloton. ELCO, ISA-Hexacta and Isostar doing the work. The lead for the breakaway stretched to about 3 minutes but is down to 2’11. 7k to the 2nd sprint point.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2022/Reports/PT/Qatar/s1/06.jpg

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2022/Micros/akm.png Peng easily distances pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2022/Micros/gzl.png Mundle to take the 2nd sprint.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2022/Reports/PT/Qatar/s1/07.jpg

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2022/Micros/fpc.png Kemboi and pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2022/Micros/yor.png Cullaigh join the party this time in the field sprint but Gaviria takes the bonus and evens the score with Coquard.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2022/Reports/PT/Qatar/s1/08.jpg

None of the bonus seconds went to a U25 eligible rider so the first finisher will wear that jersey tomorrow.

20k to go, the leaders have each tried an attack, without success, their lead is down to 49 seconds, same teams working.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2022/Reports/PT/Qatar/s1/09.jpg

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2022/Micros/iso.png Cherkasov closes down the break with 12k to go.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2022/Reports/PT/Qatar/s1/10.jpg

2.9k to go and the sprint trains are forming. On the left pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2022/Micros/ela.png Bouglas and pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2022/Micros/ela.png Farantakis lead pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2022/Micros/ela.png Coquard. pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2022/Micros/kng.png Hsu trying to get on that train. In the middle pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2022/Micros/iso.png Gaviria is on pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2022/Micros/iso.png Rickaert’s wheel with pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2022/Micros/iso.png Peak, who is currently behind Gaviria, trying to catch up. On the right, the ISA-Hexacta train has pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2022/Micros/isa.png Santos, pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2022/Micros/isa.png Harrison, and pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2022/Micros/isa.png Ewan. pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2022/Micros/duo.png Van der Sande and pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2022/Micros/lph.png Manninen following them. The rest of the riders up front are domestiques, most of the remaining sprinters are clustered in the middle of the road at the bottom of the picture.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2022/Reports/PT/Qatar/s1/11.jpg

1.4k to go. The first leadouts have all dropped. pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2022/Micros/aeg.png Groenewegen and pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2022/Micros/eav.png Van der Lijke have joined the ISA-Hexacta train. pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2022/Micros/yor.png Cullaigh and pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2022/Micros/fpc.png Kemboi trying to latch on as well. Peak has made it in front of Gaviria but used a lot of energy to get there. Rickaert drifted into the ELCO train a little and there is a gap between Coquard and Farantakis. pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2022/Micros/mol.png Lo Cicero is trying to grap Hsu’s wheel. pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2022/Micros/hsk.png Grosu is noticeable by his absence. pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2022/Micros/tti.png Samolenkov is isolated on the far right.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2022/Reports/PT/Qatar/s1/12.jpg

Under the 1k banner, a similar situation except Kemboi has faded badly from the picture and Lo Cicero was never able to get Hsu’s wheel.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2022/Reports/PT/Qatar/s1/13.jpg

600 meters and the final sprint is underway. Despite his later arrival Peak got Gaviria into a solid position. On the far right pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2022/Micros/aeg.png Groenewegen needs to find some space.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2022/Reports/PT/Qatar/s1/14.jpg

300 meters, pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2022/Micros/ela.png Coquard has a slight edge but the front 5 are neck-and-neck. From near to far they are: pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2022/Micros/iso.png Gaviria, pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2022/Micros/isa.png Ewan, pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2022/Micros/duo.png Van der Sande and pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2022/Micros/lph.png Manninen

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2022/Reports/PT/Qatar/s1/15.jpg

200 meters. pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2022/Micros/eav.png Van der Lijke thinks he has room against the barrier.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2022/Reports/PT/Qatar/s1/16.jpg

100 meters. Gaviria is fading, maybe paying for his leadout issues. It is Coquard versus Mannien right now.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2022/Reports/PT/Qatar/s1/17.jpg

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2022/Micros/eav.png Van der Lijke has found room but does he have enough time?

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2022/Reports/PT/Qatar/s1/18.jpg

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2022/Micros/lph.png Manninen is the sprint genius. pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2022/Micros/eav.png Van der Lijke 2nd.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2022/Reports/PT/Qatar/s1/19.jpg

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2022/Micros/ela.png Coquard holds off pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2022/Micros/aeg.png Groenewegen for third. pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2022/Micros/yor.png Cullaigh snatches 5th from pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2022/Micros/kng.png Hsu. Then pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2022/Micros/duo.png Van der Sande and pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2022/Micros/tti.png Samolenkov.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2022/Reports/PT/Qatar/s1/20.jpg

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2022/Micros/isa.png Ewan, and pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2022/Micros/iso.png Gaviria settle for 9th and 10th behind pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2022/Micros/mol.png Lo Cicero. pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2022/Micros/mos.png Swift comes late to take 11th.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2022/Reports/PT/Qatar/s1/21.jpg

Mannien will also get the points jersey. pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2022/Micros/fpc.png Nur Hasan finishes 13th which is 3 better than his teammate Kemboi and good enough to give him the young rider’s jersey. pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2022/Micros/akm.png Peng is unable to hold on to the peloton meaning his bonus seconds go to waste. pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2022/Micros/gzl.png Mundle holds on and slots into 9th on the GC.
