Good day! We are here in Gisborne on the East Coast of New Zealand for the first race of the CT division. We have nice clear skies today, but there is wind kicking up to 20 km/h. This will prove an extra challenge for the riders. Let the race begin!
Dzhus kicks off the race with an early move that is being followed by Orosco.
Vernon joins the duo before another group goes off containing Diaz, Brandt, Karatsivis and Fejes.
The peloton took things very easily in the beginning because guess what? We have 21 riders in the breakaway! Give me a moment to list everyone.
Brandt Vernon Bonello Johansen Martin Dzhus Diaz Renard Healy Christapopoulos Horvat Brun Orosco Fejes Kaloniatis Karatsivis Gonzalez Piaskowy Adriamihajanarivo Matsangos Alexander
The breakaway has a 4'20'' advantage as they go over the first climb of the day.
Back in the peloton riders from BNZ, Staffbase, McCormick and Bianchi are tasked with setting the pace.
With 90 km of the race remaining, the riders are done with the 2nd big loop on the course. The breakaway's gap is down to 2'24''.
The hillier part of the race begins now with 60 km to go. The peloton has done a nice job as the breakaway is literally just around the corner now.
40 km to go. A few of the breakaway riders are still hanging on with Karatsivis as the most combative among them.
We're on the third last climb now with 21 km left. The breakaway is caught. The peloton is still 100 riders strong, but it looks like the elastic should break at any moment now.
41 riders make it through the selection with two more climbs remaining. Two riders worth mentioning that aren't in this group are Le Roux, but Bianchi still have 3 riders at the front and Dieteren.
Boswell with an attack as soon as the penultimate climb begins. Luchshenko is in his wheel.
After Boswell the pace slows down, but Favilli doesn't want that and accelerates.
Hoelgaard now counters and the Norwegian is the first one that is able to open up a gap!
Quevedo is doing the chasing as Hoelgaard opened up a 30'' gap.
Pacher then makes a big effort to bring the Norwegian back as the final climb to the line begins.
Boswell is still feeling good as he makes the first move.
Looks like the American was saving his strongest attack. He opens a gap as he tackles the steepest 10%+ section now!
Boswell is one the limit here, but he's done with the climbing now and still has a 20'' gap.
All the other favourites are leaning on Favilli who is having a great day to save his team.
Unfortunately the lack of teamwork is to Boswell's advantage. The McCormick rider can celebrate with time to spare as he starts his season with a great victory!
The rest can only sprint for 2nd place.
Hoelgaard wins that sprint ahead of Luchshenko. Vliegen is 4th, Barbero 5th.
After those it's Favilli 6th, Wackermann 7th, Pibernik 8th, Edmondson 9th and McKenna completes the top 10.
