We are into the third round now. The Top 3 go straight through to the semi finals, while the others will have a final chance in some repechages bouts.
Races are seeded by previous round performances - so each heat has two winners from Round 2, two who came 2nd and two who qualified in 3rd.
Heat 1
Samolenkov and Guerao the winners present in Heat 1.
Van Asbroeck makes the early move
Samolenkov and Grosu are the responders
They make it to Van Asbroeck, what next?
Guerao and Kamberaj have left it late
Cullaigh timed it best, he comes through to win!
Samolenkov and Grosu make it through behind him.
1 | Gabriel Cullaigh | Great Britain | 5'44 | 2 | Artem Samolenkov | Russia | s.t. | 3 | Eduard Grosu | Romania | s.t. | 4 | Tom Van Asbroeck | Belgium | s.t. | 5 | Oscar Guerao | Spain | s.t. | 6 | Xhuliano Kamberaj | Albania | s.t. |
Heat 2
Enger and Zabel the previous round winners in Heat 2
Kemboi goes early
And it it those two winners, Enger and Zabel, who go after him. Van der Lijke in 4th.
Carsi and Vanderbiest don't respond, and rule themselves out of it
And it's going to be hard for Kemboi to make a fight of it
Enger wins a close fight here, Van der Lijke and Zabel qualifying
1 | Sondre Holst Enger | Norway | 5'39 | 2 | Nick Van der Lijke | Netherlands | s.t. | 3 | Rick Zabel | Germany | s.t. | 4 | Salem Kemboi | Kenya | s.t. | 5 | Romain Vanderbiest | France | s.t. | 6 | Mustafa Carsi | Turkey | s.t. |
Heat 3
Ahlstrand and Gaviria the previous winners in here
Kennaugh can be seen as the 3rd fastest in this heat, but he has gone early
Petit looking to chase, but not fully commit
This has allowed Kennaugh to open a large gap, but now comes the hardest part
Ahlstrand and Gaviria look to have played this well, now emerging from Petit's slipstream
Kennaugh will be caught; Hsu in the mix; Haller languishing
It's Gaviria vs Ahlstrand
Ahlstrand takes the win! Gaviria and Hsu through.
1 | Jonas Ahlstrand | Sweden | 5'34 | 2 | Fernando Gaviria | Colombia | s.t. | 3 | Hsuan Ping Hsu | Taiwan | s.t. | 4 | Adrien Petit | France | s.t. | 5 | Peter Kennaugh | Great Britain | s.t. | 6 | Marco Haller | Austria | s.t. |
Heat 4
Coquard and Tivani won in Round 2 - of course Tivani won in Round 1 too, proving to be a Keirin expert - so far!
No Tivani, you should know not to attack first! And this is early!
Halvorsen will set the pursuit
Coquard follows; Van Poppel starts to show interest; Kragh Anderson and Gibbons aren't going yet
A reconvening at the front, 4 together.
Coquard launches!
Halvorsen is able to go after him - Van Poppel not yet, on Tivani's shoulder
Halvorsen challenges Coquard; Tivani is actually holding 3rd! But are Gibbons and Kragh Anderson closing fast enough?
Halvorsen wins!
And Tivani does it! He is the first early attacker to hold on to a Top 3 spot, across all of Round 2 and 3! His journey continues.
1 | Kristoffer Halvorsen | Norway | 5'40 | 2 | Bryan Coquard | France | s.t. | 3 | German Nicolas Tivani | Argentina | s.t. | 4 | Danny Van Poppel | Netherlands | s.t. | 5 | Asbjorn Kragh Andersen | Denmark | s.t. | 6 | Ryan Gibbons | South Africa | s.t. |
Heat 5
Final heat, Van Stayen and Bonifazio those with the experience of winning a Keirin in here
Eislers attacks first!
Groenewegen as first responder
Van Stayen bridges across too; Liu, Kump and Bonifazio further back
Is this set up for Van Stayen now?
Likely too late for Kump and Bonifazio
Eislers not out of this! It's a 3 way fight for the win
Could we have a first win for the first rider to attack?
Ingus Eislers has done it!
So that tactic can work after all. Van Stayen and Groenewegen join him in the Top 3.
1 | Ingus Eislers | Latvia | 5'50 | 2 | Michael Van Stayen | Belgium | s.t. | 3 | Dylan Groenewegen | Netherlands | s.t. | 4 | Jiankun Liu | China | s.t. | 5 | Niccolo Bonifazio | Italy | s.t. | 6 | Marko Kump | Slovenia | s.t. |
