The final heat of the time trials has Zmorka as the top time triallist, but along with the likes of Sutterlin, Campanaerts and Jungels, we probably can't expect the course to suit him well. Instead, all rounders like Wirtgen, Cattaneo and Pluchkin may be the names to watch. So that's hopes for Ukraine, Germany, Belgium, Luxembourg, Italy and Moldova - with Thailand and South Africa amongst others with hopes too.
The first wave shaped up to be a three way battle for fastest time.
Lennard Kämna, Germany
Filippo Ganna, Italy
Bob Jungels, Luxembourg
Ganna held the lead for most of the ride, 1 second up on Jungels. But a strong finish saw Jungel take a bit of a surprise lead, by 4 seconds!
Kämna had been tied with Jungels, but perhaps felt the pressure of trying to qualify a space for Germany, and faded particularly in the final quarter - to be 20 seconds slower.
Liphongyu puts Thailand in 4th, at 34 seconds
That's 5 seconds ahead of Serbia, after Kasa's ride
Anderberg was more than a minute back, but that is enough for 6th for now for the Swede.
Standings after Wave 1:
In the second wave, as tipped, three riders are the best of the field.
Mattia Cattaneo, Italy
Aleksandr Pluchkin, Moldova
Tom Wirtgen, Luxembourg
The screenshot above coming from the third quarter of the race, where Wirtgen has passed Marlen Zmorka. As feared, not a good course for the Ukrainian.
Of the lead three, there was no separating Cattaneo and Pluchkin at the first checkpoint, while Wirtgen looked more on course for 3rd.
On course for 4th meanwhile is Tobias Ludvigsson, for Sweden.
Checkpoint standings, with Cattaneo opening up 1 second lead on Pluchkin:
It is shaping up to be a close battle for 5th through 7th, with all looking stronger than the earlier Jungels, Ganna, Kamna triumverate.
Milos Borisavljevic, Serbia
Yuttana Mano, Thailand
Stefan De Bod, South Africa
De Bod is on the back foot of the three, fighting to make time back up.
Third checkpoint standings (missing Wirtgen 3rd at 21):
Other riders out there include William Chiarello, who is pushing the hill hard to fight for a Top 10 finish
Basilio Ramos Ticona is riding great to take 12th for Bolivia
Youcef Reguigui also earning himself a Top 15
At the front the day belongs to Mattia Cattaneo, defeating Pluchkin by 5 seconds. Not the fastest heat of the Olympics, but within 10 seconds of the best time set on the course!
In the Top 6 fight Borisavljevic faded badly at the end, falling behind Mano, but remaining 10 seconds ahead of De Bod.
So Italy, Moldova, Luxembourg, Sweden, Thailand and Serbia will complete the Olympic Final field.
Belgium and Germany miss out - however, Silvio Herklotz and Tim Wellens will be awarded two of the four available 'wildcard' spots in the final. Alongside Rafal Reis and Merhawi Kudus, they are considered to be riders who would have performed much better on the course than their compatriots who were initially selected instead of them.
