Deutschland Tour - Stage 8

We mentioned yesterday that today’s stage is flat. That’s not entirely true. Sure it has a flat rating but the final kilometre is at a very high gradient, so maybe we won’t see the pure sprinters fighting it out today after all. Bennati will do his best to keep up though as he still has a very good chance of taking the points jersey.

The stage totals 160 km raced on a 20-kilometres circuit, meaning the riders will have to negotiate the final hill 8 times.

Luca Mazzanti of Wild Card Team Molteni, took off in a solo attempt today.

A lot of teams showed interest in the stage back in the pack.

The very likely winner of this race, Cadel Evans, was again sitting comfortable in the pack, well wrapped-up by his teammates.

So was Bennati who was no doubt looking to win the Points Classement on today’s stage. He just needs to finish 12th to win it. Also Eisel, sitting at 54 points isn’t completely out of contention yet, but he needs to to finish in the Top 2 and not have Bennati scoring any points, which seems unlikely.

Mazzanti’s lead topped at 10’15 with 90 kilometres to go. If you look carefully in this next picture you can see the pack crossing the bridge behind him.

Apparently Carlsberg hasn’t given up on the points jersey at they hit front alongside La Gazetta.

Entering lap 6 with 60 kilometres to go, Mazzanti still has 6’25 on the pack, but it looks impossible evenso.

The high pace in the pack costs dearly for especially one rider who surprisingly drops off the back. It’s Nintendo – Honda’s Perez Fernandez, who occupied 13th place in the GC before today. He is not coming back. Also some of today’s favourites for the stage win, Cooke and Weylandt were dropped.

Luca Mazzanti is caught on the penultimate lap with 24 kilometres to go. So we will have a sprint, but who will win. As shown in the first picture of Mazzanti, you can see that the finale doesn’t suit the pure sprinters, but more punchy riders.

Mazzanti put in an inspiring effort but he fell short today.

Entering the last lap the pack is down to just 66 riders because of the high pace, but besides Perez Fernandez none of the other favourites has been dropped. Both Bennati and Eisel are still in there, and Domina Vacanze is also at the front now, presumeably working for Bobbie Traksel.

Just before we enter the last three kilometres there is a crash!

Eventhough we only caught a picture of a Festina guy getting up there was a lot of riders involved, including race leader Cadel Evans, Sinkewitz, Iglinskiy, Karpets and Rogers! We’ll come back to that slight inconvenience later, but let’s turn attention to the front, where Carlsberg have kicked things off with Sieberg leading out Eisel.

About the crash it doesn’t seem like it will cause any problems, as the gap between the groups isn’t very big. It has turned out catastrophic for Bennati though as he was caught up in the crash and he won’t be able to battle it out for the stage win or the points jersey.

The favourites who dodged the crash and looking to gain time now are Fothen, Gadret, Dekker, Popovych and Brajkovic. It turns out that Nibali has the hit the road aswell, as Eisel bursts into the final kilometre leading.

Coming up from behind is his teammate Schumacher who is looking to capitalize on the high gradient.

But Eisel takes it! Schumacher finishes 2nd as Sieberg slams home a phenomenal Carlsberg 1-2-3. This also means that Eisel wins the points competition!

Apparently the fast-paced sprint by Carlsberg caused 11 riders to break clear of the front group, in which Thomas Dekker is in! As the Evans Group manages to catch up with with the other part of the front group, we have a group of 11 riders finishing 58 seconds ahead of the pack with all the favourites in, and as said Dekker is among those 11 riders and he will gain 58 seconds on all the favourites, so he will move up into 4th position, passing Janez Brajkovic.

So Evans, Rogers and Karpets don’t lose any time on the other favourites, but what about Nibali? He hasn’t crossed the line yet.

He has abandoned! Tragedy for the Italian who ripped up yesterday’s time trial. He was 7th in the GC before today, but now he will only come away with his win on stage 7.

That’s it for this edition of the Deutschland Tour. Cadel Evans and his WikiPedia team dominated the proceedings as they come away with a very well-deserved overall victory. Fothen and Gadret wraps up the podium. Bernhard Eisel takes the Points Competition on the last day while Sebastien Joly is the comfortable winner of the KoM Competition. See you next year!
