Tokyo Olympics - TT - Round 1 - Heat 2
SportingNonsense
For the 2nd time trial heat we have Mads Wurtz looking to lead the way for Denmark. France with a strong duo in Lecuisinier and Paillot, while Australia bring Bobridge and Durbridge.

How will others fare on the climbing course? Vlatos for Greece, Onodera for Japan, and Kiwi pair Atkins and Sergent will be hoping they can still do well. If not, Vangstad of Norway could suit the course more, and there will be others.

Lecuisinier is out in the first wave so is out to set a strong benchmark

Prado of Mexico started very strong. But 2nd at the first checkpoint would become 3rd by the finish.

Ioannidis was 3rd at the first checkpoint, but it is not the Greek who overtook Prado - although he came very close. An 8 second gap narrowed to just 1 at the finish.

Surpassing them both was Rasmus Sterobo. Denmark 2nd after Wave 1, with Wurtz still to come, is a strong position

Vangstad only managed to come 5th, which he will be a bit disappointed with

Malaysia currently hold 6th place, thanks to an exceptional ride by Mushin Misbah

Durbridge down in 11th, did not enjoy this course

One last look at Pierre-Henri Lecuisinier as he almost caught Nikolaos Ioannidis on the line. is time of 56'35 was 18 seconds slower than Taylor Phinney in the first heat.

These are the Wave 1 standings.

Earlier we saw Prado be 2nd fastest early on to Lecuisinier, and only two riders slot between them from Wave 2.

This is the first checkpoint standings

That does include everyone, including Vlatos. But he is down in 42nd - really just not a good Olympic course for him.

A challenge too for Mads Wurtz. But he is working through it, and is up to 4th at Checkpoint 2.

Also improving is Simon Spilak, moving up to 5th for Slovenia

Paillot got the 2nd start slot for France, and is now into 6th

Checkpoint 2 standings:

Prado holding the 6th slot for Mexico at this stage - and we know he does hold off Greece by 1 second at the finish. Notable by their absence at this stage then are the Oceanica representatives.

The New Zealand pair going so slowly that TV pictures did not pick them up, and the expectant hopes of Australia now resting on Jack Bobridge. Only 10th at this stage, for 8th best nation.

Andriafenomananiaina is putting up a strong rider here for Madagascar

De Luna also going well, Mexico very up for this. They could have the 3rd or 4th best 2nd rider - but it's going to be down to Prado's time to see if they can make the final

Closing in on the finish now. Bobrdige is still 6 seconds behind Prado.

Wurtz has come to the line in 4th place, with Amador and Laengen taking the podium for the day.

What can Bobridge do?

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2020/Reports/Others/Oly/oly_t_b_26.jpg

He has made it! By just 4 seconds.

France, Costa Rica, Norway, Denmark, Slovenia and Australia qualify.
