We saw our sole country riders take on the road race course first, and the same applies for the time trial. Based around Matsuomyo, how much impact will the Shimohisakata climb have?
After an all-Asian podium in the road race, could it be all-African here? Laizer and Kireva are fastest against the clock, while Andriafenomananiaina has already demonstrated his climbing abilities too.
There is a wide range of abilities and the first pass of the day goes to Puerto Rico's Morales Ortega, over Bahamas' Major.
Expectations are high for Laizer as he takes to the course.
Top 2 on the road, Destribois and Chhetri will find it hard to repeat that today.
All are through the first check, and there are some surprises!
Andriafenomananiaina has the fastest time, while Laizer is already a minute down and in 14th place.
Salcone is riding well - he only trails by 3 seconds.
Kireva completes the podium at this early stage.
And it is the same Top 3 at the second checkpoint - with Zouzou extending his advantage.
Anguilla's Hennis is taking aim at Top 10 finish today.
Top 10 looks to be all Goh can hope for today too, after 3rd in the preliminary road race.
One of only two PT riders in the field, Arissol was looking to put himself in the mix early on, but will lose a bit of ground between the 2nd and 3rd checkpoints.
Zouzou's lead is now 16 seconds over Salcone!
But it's still to close to call for the final Top 4 spots - Rachid has now closed the gap on Salcone, with Petrovski only 5 seconds behind now.
And the Macedonian will set the first benchmark at the finish, in a time of one hour and 41 seconds. It's impressive from his 66 TT, he must have had an extremely good day, as he looks to improve on 5th place this time.
A big finish though from Croes of Aruba, and he goes 5 seconds faster!
The pressure is on Rachid then, since he only had 5 seconds on Petrovski at the last check point.
He may have booked a spot for Lebanon in the next round though, as he is 11 seconds faster.
Fiji are certainly though - Salcone sets a new fastest time. Can it challenge for victory?
Big disappointment for Laizer. He has lost more than 3 minutes on Salcone, and will finish 14th.
Better though from Kireva - he has put in a strong finish to finish 14 seconds clear of Rachid, and only 13 behind Salcone.
The winner today though is going to be Zouzou Andriafenomananiaina. He is the only rider to go under the hour, 59'51, for a 12 second victory.
Madagascar, Fiji, Zimbabwe and Lebanon, we'll see you in the time trial again.
At the other end of the scale, Jay Major can very much take the crown of Lanterne Rouge of the Olympics - a distant last in both preliminary events.
