Bayern Rundfahrt
The 4th and final stage of the Bayern Rundfahrt is a 25.5k flat timetrial.
The TT riders are the stage favorites
Brändle (1st on GC) and Cosnefroy (2nd) are both on the favorites list. Onodera (10th) also on the list and will be hoping gain places.
The first of the major TT riders to finish is Dillier. He takes the lead 37 seconds ahead of Ligthart.
Bernal ceded his GC ambitions yesterday but does put in a nice TT ride, taking the lead by 27 seconds.
Viennet, Stage 1 winner and the man Bernal was protecting, is the next major finisher, he beats his teammate by 3 seconds to take over the hot seat.
In surprise news Barbio has gone through the time check 2 seconds ahead of leader Viennet.
He fades and is third at the finish but times seem to be improving as his teammate Gesink has just beaten his intermediate time. He can’t hold it either and slots into 3rd at the finish, 4 seconds down.
Fiedler is just behind him and sets another new best at the intermediate.
At the finish he is the new race leader, 7 seconds ahead. Viennet won’t be doubling his stage win count.
Fiedler won’t be winning the stage either as he is immediately passed by Sipos with a new best time of 31’29, 2 seconds ahead of Fiedler.
Howson gives Duolingo two in the top five as he finishes 4th, 11 seconds behind his teammate.
Lammertink is the next big TT rider on the course. He has another disappointing stage; he loses 30 seconds only good enough for 12th.
Dees puts in a good time, 3rd at the finish, 5 seconds behind Sipos.
Zmorka is next, he had the best time at the intermediate check.
And he expands his lead and takes the stage lead by 13 seconds.
The top 10 are beginning to reach the intermediate check. Onodera is the first of them and he lays down a marker, he is just 2 seconds off Zmorka’s best time there.
At the beginning of the day the GC top 10 looked like this:
1 Matthias Brändle Red Bull Zalgiris 9h48'45 2 Benoit Cosnefroy Aramco DP + 2 3 Rigoberto Uran Minions + 7 4 Ion Izagirre Polar + 11 5 Eddie Dunbar Indosat Ooredoo + 26 6 Jose Goncalves Team UBS s.t. 7 Chen Shikai Voyagin - Bird + 30 8 Hampus Anderberg Aker - MOT + 34 9 Vegard Stake Laengen Aker - MOT + 42 10 Rei Onodera Voyagin - Bird + 50
11th placed Jacobsen was another 34 seconds back and Zmorka was 1’09 behind Onodera so the top 10 is probably settled, the battle is for places between them.
By the first check 9th placed Laengen had already lost 21 seconds to Onodera.
As the Aker-MOT rider tackles the 2nd half we get news that Onodera has taken the race lead from Zmorka by 2 seconds.
Laengen loses 34 seconds. Great news for Voyagin as Onodera is up to 9th on GC (at least) and on the hot seat.
More bad news for Aker-MOT as Anderberg had already lost 14 seconds to Onodera the time check. He only had 16 seconds in hand.
While things go badly for Aker-MOT they go well for Voyagin. Shikai passes the time check just 10 seconds down on the lead. Very solid time for him.
Also, great times at the intermediate for Goncalves (+7) and Dunbar (+3).
Not so for Izagirre, he has lost 22 seconds at the immediate. Which means he is behind Dunbar and almost behind Goncalves on the GC.
Worse new still for Uran as he is 35 seconds down as he crosses the check. He is dropping from 3rd to 7th on GC behind everyone back to Shikai, he needs to stabilize in the 2nd half.
Back to the finish now. Anderberg finishes in 7th on the stage by loses 27 seconds to Onodera, the Japanese rider is up to 8th in the GC.
Shikai finishes strongly and loses just 11 seconds. He will hold on to 7th in the GC and could move up if Uran doesn’t have strong second half.
Goncalves is the next man home and finishes the stage in 3rd, +7 seconds. He will at least move up one spot and maybe two.
Dunbar has put in a great ride, he gained 2 seconds on Onodera in the second half and is the new race leader. He started the day fearing for his White Jersey and he will end it with that secure and maybe a stage win and GC podium.
Izagirre gets worse in the 2nd half and finishes the stage in 16th , 36 seconds behind the leader. He loses GC spots to Shikai, Goncalves and Dunbar.
Uran loses 56 seconds, 29th on the stage. A debacle for him as he will drop all the way to 9th, losing out to the same 3 as Izaguirre but also to Onodera and Anderberg.
So that leaves just the top 2 out on the course. At the time check the battle between Cosnefroy and Brändle was a dead heat, both on the same time. Meaning the latter was holding on to his 2 second lead over the former.
But that time was 21 seconds behind Dunbar meaning Brändle’s lead over the Irishman was down to just 5 seconds. So he has to finish within 26 seconds of Dunbar.
Cosnefroy at the 1k banner, a good 2nd half and he could still win the race, a bad second half and he drops to 3rd or even 4th.
He finishes in 15th +35, he loses out to both Dunbar and Goncalves, disappointing for Aramco.
Brändle digs for home. The recent 2nd half times have not been good.
He can’t do it, +34, 15th on the stage. A huge day for Indosat as Eddie Dunbar wins the stage, the GC, and the White Jersey. He also scores enough to add the points jersey to that haul. He won’t be as interested in an offseason pay cut after this.
Brändle does hang on to 2nd over Goncalves on fractions. Cosnefroy back to 4th and Shikai up to 5th as Voyagin take 2nd and 5th on the stage and 5th and 7th on GC.
Aker-MOTs day closes with them losing the teams competition, by 8 seconds, to UBS. Juul-Jensen secured the KOM yesterday.
