Tour du Maroc - Stage 6 Report
The riders go back into the Mountains for a long and tough stage. At 194.6km, it will be a real test of stamina and endurance. There's not a single flat section at the riders start on an incline up to the Cat 3 Toufliht. After a short descent, it's then a long climb up the Cat 2 Taddart Oufella. It's then a bumpy day prior to a short and steep Cat 2 Anzal and finally a steep but short climb up to the finish line in Agouim.
A large breakaway of 16 riders is formed with still 170km of riding remaining. No one particularly threating to the GC lead but plenty of riders looking to make up lost time as well as prove a point.
MO Ndayisenga + 6'51 26th 78 Chamorro + 8'16 31st 78 Lane + 8'43 38th 74 Squire + 9'45 47th 77 Bayly + 10'37 57th 74 Mamykin + 11'22 63rd 77 Tesfaye Heyi + 12'39 69th 70 Lastra + 14'01 77th 74 Champoussin + 14'32 86th 71 Cort Nielsen + 15'48 89th 78 Van Poucke + 16'36 93rd 72 Tatarinov + 17'40 98th 75 Cras + 19'30 102nd 73 Sulvaran + 31'15 134th 68 Rubio + 36'29 152nd 69 Froidevaux + 39'47 159th 62
Unsurprisingly, there's a good battle over the first climb of the day. It's Ndayisenga who just takes maximum points ahead of Lastra.
The breakaway remains together as they start the next climb. The gap is 4'13 with 130km still to go.
Squire is first over the Cat 2. Lastra is 2nd and moves into 5th in the KOM, 8 points off the lead.
The gap is down to 2'57 with 75km to go. There is only 1 KOM between now and the finishing climb.
50km remaining and the gap is 2'49. These riders would definitely be fancying their chances given the lack of GC threat in combination with Lopez not being the most suited to such a stage.
The riders start the 2nd last climb of the day with 30km to go! The gap is 2'36.
23km to go as the breakaway go over the final KOM of the day. It's Tatarinov who is first over the top. Only 6 riders are with him at the moment but more may join before the base of the final climb.
In the Peloton we see attacks from Roglic (9th @ + 2'33) and Olivier (8th @ + 1'34).
17km for the GC group of 33 as the duo who attacked have been reeled back in. The gap is currently 2'33 from this group to the leading group of 7.
The leading group of 7 has less than 10km to go. They have a gap of 1'21 to a group of 5 and an additional 1'54 back to the Peloton. It's looking good for them. In here are:
Cort Nielsen
Van Poucke
Lane
Tatarinov
Mamykin
Squire
Chamorro
Only 7km remaining for the Peloton as Olivier (8th @ + 1'34) goes on the attack. He immediately has Haig (4th @ + 46") and Godoy (2nd @ + 3") for company.
Crncevic does the chasing before he cracks and leaves the work to Blums.
Back up front, it's Mamykin who has attacked and has a gap of 30 seconds back to 5 of his former companions.
4.5km to go and Arndt is the next to try an acceleration. He is closely followed.
3km now and a group of Olivier, Roglic, Arndt and Areruya manages to get a small gap back to the other GC leaders.
Only 1km remaining for Mamykin. He has a 22 second gap to the chasers who are now being caught by the 4 GC attackers. There is a 29 second gap to the 17 man Peloton which still includes the Yellow Jersey.
300m to go and Mamykin isn't going to be able to hold on here. Areruya and Roglic looking the strongest at the moment, although Squire seems to have a bit in the tank too!
And it's Tatarinov surprises everyone to win Stage 6 ahead of Squire!
Areruya and Roglic finish with the same time.
It's + 26" for the next group including Olivier and Lopez.
+ 52" for Godoy, Penasa, Haig, Galta and Garby.
+ 1'24 for a group including Berhane, Min, Schelling and Alarcon.
The final Top 10 rider to come through is Preidler at + 2'26.
It's a good day in the GC for Lopez who actually stretches out his lead over Godoy to 29 seconds. Haig and Penasa are + 1'12. Alarcon is 5th @ + 1'32 while Olivier is another 2 seconds back in 6th. Roglic and Areruya move up to 7th and 8th.
Degenkolb still leads the Points. No change in the gap which stays at 3 points.
Garby keeps the lead in the KOM by 4 points to a trio.
Areruya leads the U25s, Min is 2nd and then it's a big gap to 3rd.
Kraftwerk Man Machine lead the Teams.
