Tour du Maroc - Stage 3 Report
It was the Puncheurs turn yesterday, it's the Climbers turn today. At 156.8km, it's far from being the longest stage the riders will face, even on this tour. However, the riders will go over multiple big climbs including 2 Cat 1s, an ascent of the same Cat 2 twice and 2 Cat 3s as well. The one thing worth noting is that the final KOM is crested 18km away from the finish. It'll be a real test for GC leader Lopez today.
On the early slopes of the first climb of the day and we have a 9 man leading group who are 1'24 ahead of a chasing group of 5 which is 2'56 clear of the Peloton.
Leaders
Garby + 2'40 Denz + 2'40 Tesfaye Heyi + 2'40 Brambilla + 3'56 Turgis + 4'10 (1st in KOM) Vingegaard + 4'22 Cemazar + 4'22 Cras + 4'22 O'Brien + 5'33
Chasers
Waeytens + 2'17 Zoidl + 2'40 Tatarinov + 3'49 Fouche + 3'56 El Sabbahi + 8'04
Denz wins the first KOM sprint over the Cat 1 Isseksi.
Denz is first through the Cat 3 sprint shortly after as well. Garby and Brambilla have ridden at a steady pace away from their former companions.
Brambilla is first through the Cat 2. Denz should catch this duo on the descent.
102km remaining for the leaders but we go back to check on the Peloton which is down to 103 riders now. They are 5'53 behind the leading trio with 8 riders scattered in-between.
76km to go and we have a leading group of 8 riders now. Their gap to the Peloton is 2'55.
Tatarinov Denz Brambilla Zoidl Garby Turgis, Cras Vingegaard
65km remaining and 12.5km to the top of the Cat 1 as Bayly has upped the pace in the Peloton which has reduced the gap to only 1'11 for the now 5 leaders.
Garby is the lone leader on the road now with still 2.5km to climb. Brambilla is 2nd on the road @ + 1'06. Haig leads a group of 12 riders at an additional + 1'23.
Garby is first over the Cat 1 climb.
In the GC group, Penasa has launched an attack 1km from the top of the climb.
Brambilla is @ + 1'18 and then it's the GC Leaders group @ + 58". All others are at least a minute or more behind this group.
Penasa Haig Godoy Preidler Lopez Alarcon Olivier, Denz Schelling Areruya Berhane Min Roglic
We start to see some aggression in the leaders group with 33km to go and 1.5km to the top of the 2nd last climb. Godoy leads by 16 seconds to Garby, Haig and Alarcon. At an additional 15 seconds is a group of 7 where Denz, Schelling and Min have been dropped.
Godoy has a gap of 28 seconds to the trio who have been reeled back in by the other 7 behind them.
22km remaining and 3.5km of climbing up the final categorised climb of the day. Godoy has been caught as Penasa launches yet another attack.
Only 13km left now and we have a leading group of 9 as a result of Areruya and Roglic being dropped.
A brave attack comes from Garby who goes off in search of a stage win.
Berhane goes off in pursuit as Alarcon is left to chase.
These 2 joined each other but failed to co-operate and so have been caught. With 1.5km to go, it'll be an uphill sprint to the finish.
Absolutely no surprises as it's Godoy who goes first with 1.2km to go.
Olivier and Alarcon are currently 2nd and 3rd on the road while Godoy is still a few bike lengths ahead.
Godoy had enough in the tank and showed aggression today and it's paid off as he wins Stage 3.
Alarcon is 2nd with Olivier 3rd. Haig and Penasa are 4th and 5th.
Preidler is 6th and there's then a gap to Lopez and Berhane. It's + 11" for all of these riders.
An excellent ride today from Garby who is 9th, + 49".
Areruya takes 10th in a group including Roglic, Schelling (+ 1'58") and Min (+2'11).
It's then Ndayisenga, Latour, Brambilla, Denz and Arndt (@ + 3'06)with a gap to Galta (+ 3'33).
A group including Monsalve, Masnada and Guldhammer comes in next @ + 5'47.
Lopez holds onto the GC lead by a narrow margin of only 3 seconds to Godoy. Alarcon is 3rd @ + 34" before Haig, Penasa and Preidler are + 46".
Godoy leads the Points.
Garby leads the KOM ahead of Denz and Brambilla.
Areruya leads the U25s by 13 seconds to Min while 3rd is more than 3 minutes back.
Philips - Force India still lead the Teams.
