Tour du Maroc - Stage 1 Report

It's the opening stage here in Morocco and it's an opportunity for the sprinters to make their mark, with 3 other sprint stages later in the race, as well as to be the first Race Leader.

Very early in the stage and there's a high pace at the front of the Peloton where it seems that a lot of riders want to get into the breakaway but the Peloton doesn't appear to want too many riders out in front.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2021/Reports/PTHC/Maroc/Pics/Stage%201/PCM0001.jpg

It takes about 50km but we do finally have a settled breakaway of 5 riders who have a gap of 2'36. In here are:
pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2021/Micros/brs.png Mugisha
pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2021/Micros/grm.png Eekhoff, Korsaeth
pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2021/Micros/ubs.png Spengler
pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2021/Micros/car.png Nolf

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2021/Reports/PTHC/Maroc/Pics/Stage%201/PCM0002.jpg

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2021/Micros/ubs.png Spengler wins the first of 3 intermediate sprints. The gap is 3'21 with 120km still remaining.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2021/Reports/PTHC/Maroc/Pics/Stage%201/PCM0003.jpg

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2021/Micros/grm.png Eeekhoff had the most pace but he came from the back of the group and didn't have enough to take the 2nd sprint which is instead won by pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2021/Micros/car.png Nolf. 80km to go and the gap is 3'08.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2021/Reports/PTHC/Maroc/Pics/Stage%201/PCM0004.jpg

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2021/Micros/grm.png Eekhoff does win the 3rd and final one with 50km to go. Their gap is now down to 2'16.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2021/Reports/PTHC/Maroc/Pics/Stage%201/PCM0005.jpg

It's pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2021/Micros/kmm.png Kraftwerk, pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2021/Micros/mol.png MOL and pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2021/Micros/isa.png ISA who are sharing all of the chasing in the Peloton. The gap now 1'08 with 30km to go so the job isn't done just yet.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2021/Reports/PTHC/Maroc/Pics/Stage%201/PCM0006.jpg

52 seconds with 20km still to go.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2021/Reports/PTHC/Maroc/Pics/Stage%201/PCM0007.jpg

The Peloton leaves it pretty late as the breakaway is caught with only 6.5km to go.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2021/Reports/PTHC/Maroc/Pics/Stage%201/PCM0008.jpg

2km to go and we have the pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2021/Micros/mol.png MOL train on the right-hand side for Petit. The pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2021/Micros/kmm.png Kraftwerk train in through the middle for Zabel. Behind Zabel we have pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2021/Micros/pol.png, Geurao, pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2021/Micros/hsk.png Van der Kooij and pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2021/Micros/eav.png Holloway. On the left, pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2021/Micros/isa.png Degenkolb still has Contreras in front of him and then pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2021/Micros/cdb.png Kragh Andersen behind him.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2021/Reports/PTHC/Maroc/Pics/Stage%201/PCM0009.jpg

Under the kite and pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2021/Micros/mol.png Petit still has a lead-out. Behind him is pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2021/Micros/akm.png Videika and pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2021/Micros/jur.png Habtom. pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2021/Micros/kmm.png Zabel has a lead-out but there's a gap between them, the same can be said for pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2021/Micros/isa.png Degenkolb. pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2021/Micros/pol.png Guerao still well positioned.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2021/Reports/PTHC/Maroc/Pics/Stage%201/PCM0010.jpg

600m to the line and pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2021/Micros/pol.png Guerao is still in the lead with pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2021/Micros/isa.png Contreras 2nd. pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2021/Micros/kmm.png Zabel and pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2021/Micros/isa.png Degenkolb are flying up the left-hand side.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2021/Reports/PTHC/Maroc/Pics/Stage%201/PCM0011.jpg

Only 200m to go and pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2021/Micros/isa.png Degenkolb has just passed pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2021/Micros/pol.png Guerao. pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2021/Micros/kmm.png Zabel, pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2021/Micros/cdb.png Kragh Andersen and pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2021/Micros/hsk.png Van der Kooij are moving quickly too!

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2021/Reports/PTHC/Maroc/Pics/Stage%201/PCM0012.jpg

He's the favourite for a reason and he lives up to it, rewarding his team's efforts. pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2021/Micros/isa.png John Degenkolb wins the opening stage here in Morocco.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2021/Reports/PTHC/Maroc/Pics/Stage%201/PCM0013.jpg

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2021/Micros/cdb.png Kragh Andersen comes closest to the German as he is 2nd while pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2021/Micros/hsk.png Van der Kooij is 3rd. pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2021/Micros/eav.png Holloway just pips pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2021/Micros/pol.png Guerao on the line for 4th while pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2021/Micros/kmm.png Zabel is 6th.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2021/Reports/PTHC/Maroc/Pics/Stage%201/PCM0014.jpg

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2021/Micros/jur.png Habtom is 7th, pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2021/Micros/akm.png Videika 8th, pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2021/Micros/duo.png Van der Sande 9th and pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2021/Micros/evo.png Waersted 10th.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2021/Reports/PTHC/Maroc/Pics/Stage%201/PCM0015.jpg

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2021/Micros/isa.png Degenkolb is our Race Leader going into Stage 2. Breakaway riders, pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2021/Micros/car.png Nolf and pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2021/Micros/ubs.png Spengler are 2nd and 4th after their bonus seconds form the intermediate sprints.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2021/Reports/PTHC/Maroc/Pics/Stage%201/PCM0016.jpg

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2021/Micros/isa.png Degenkolb in the Points lead but pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2021/Micros/cdb.png Kragh Andersen will wear the jersey tomorrow.
pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2021/Micros/grm.png Eekhoff leads the U25s.
pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2021/Micros/isa.png ISA - Hexacta lead the Teams.
