Tour of Northern Europe - Stage 8 Report

It's the final day here at the Tour of Northern Europe which means only 159.8km separates pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2021/Micros/eav.png Tom Wirtgen from the Overall Race Victory. It shouldn't be particularly troublesome to him or his team as the sprinters teams should look to control the breakaway as to give their leaders another chance of a stage win. With 5 Cat 3 climbs, there could be a change of leader in the KOM today so we'll be keeping an eye on that also.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2021/Reports/PT/TONE/Stage%208/Stage%208%20Profile.png

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2021/Micros/isa.png Arissol rolls through the first KOM on his own but he should be joined by others shortly.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2021/Reports/PT/TONE/Stage%208/PCM0001.jpg

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2021/Micros/hsk.png Hofstede is uncontested as he leads a group of 4 through the 2nd KOM. As none of these riders had any KOM points going into this stage, pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2021/Micros/hsk.png Goldstein will win the King of the Mountains. These 4 do have a decent chance of survival given that pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2021/Micros/isa.png Arissol is the closest to the GC lead but even he is 8'39 behind.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2021/Reports/PT/TONE/Stage%208/PCM0002.jpg

The gap is only 2'14 with 90km to go with the Peloton managing them closely.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2021/Reports/PT/TONE/Stage%208/PCM0003.jpg

60km and the gap continues to decline down to 1'51 now. The teams doing most the work are pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2021/Micros/tti.png Tinkoff, pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2021/Micros/xr0.png Xero, pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2021/Micros/map.png Mapei and pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2021/Micros/eav.png Vesuvio.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2021/Reports/PT/TONE/Stage%208/PCM0004.jpg

50km to go and a reasonable pace, which has the gap down to 1'28, in combination with high winds is really stretching the Peloton so it wouldn't be too much of a surprise to see a split.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2021/Reports/PT/TONE/Stage%208/PCM0005.jpg

The riders go over the last KOM of the day and it's actually going to be a pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2021/Micros/hsk.png Huski 1-2 as Hofstede is 2nd. pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2021/Micros/isa.png Arissol could only have achieved 2nd at best but he comes away with 4th.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2021/Reports/PT/TONE/Stage%208/PCM0006.jpg

There is disharmony in the breakaway as they realise their time may be about to come to an end with still 20km to go. The gap is now well under a minute.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2021/Reports/PT/TONE/Stage%208/PCM0007.jpg

10km to go and the main chasing teams look to have thrown in the towel as the gap grows out to 1'31.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2021/Reports/PT/TONE/Stage%208/PCM0008.jpg

2km now remaining for the breakaway. Their gap still 1'13 so they should comfortably hold on here.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2021/Reports/PT/TONE/Stage%208/PCM0009.jpg

400m for the 4 breakaway riders as they start their sprint. Only 300m behind we have the sprinters from the Peloton who are on the charge but surely they've left it too late.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2021/Reports/PT/TONE/Stage%208/PCM0010.jpg

It's looking good for pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2021/Micros/hsk.png Hofstede with pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2021/Micros/isa.png Arissol the only one who looks like he may be able to make a late challenge.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2021/Reports/PT/TONE/Stage%208/PCM0011.jpg

But pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2021/Micros/hsk.png Hofstede is far too quick in the end as he wins the final stage here!

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2021/Reports/PT/TONE/Stage%208/PCM0012.jpg

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2021/Micros/isa.png Arissol is 2nd ahead of pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2021/Micros/aeg.png van der Hoorn.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2021/Reports/PT/TONE/Stage%208/PCM0013.jpg

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2021/Micros/pol.png Viennet holds on for 4th ahead of pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2021/Micros/tti.png Moser who is the best of the Peloton.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2021/Reports/PT/TONE/Stage%208/PCM0014.jpg

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2021/Micros/grm.png Pedersen pips pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2021/Micros/map.png Bewley on the line for 6th. pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2021/Micros/zpc.png Young is 8th. pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2021/Micros/xr0.png Rowe is 9th. pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2021/Micros/fpc.png Kamberaj is best of the rest in 10th.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2021/Reports/PT/TONE/Stage%208/PCM0015.jpg

There could have been a gap given but the race officials don't pay it.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2021/Reports/PT/TONE/Stage%208/PCM0016.jpg

And so, with no changes on the final day, the winner of the Tour of Northern Europe is pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2021/Micros/eav.png Tom Wirtgen. A well-earned win after his relative dominance in the decisive stages which saw him win the timetrial on Stage 5 and yesterday's stage in the hills. pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2021/Micros/pum.png Team Puma-SAP are rewarded for their riding with Cavagna in 2nd and Ganna in 6th. pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2021/Micros/gen.png Generali's TTT dominance and their depth here sees them take 3rd Kung, 5th Oliveira, 7th Debesay, 8th Van Baarle and 10th De Buyst. The only other Top 10 spot went to pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2021/Micros/eav.png Pokala in 9th. 3 teams taking up the entire Top 10!

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2021/Reports/PT/TONE/Stage%208/PCM0017.jpg

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2021/Micros/map.png Bewley wins the Points classification with a small buffer to pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2021/Micros/eav.png Wirtgen. pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2021/Micros/xr0.png Rowe is the best of the other sprinters.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2021/Reports/PT/TONE/Stage%208/PCM0018.jpg

Breakaways served pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2021/Micros/hsk.png Huski Chocolate well as they go 1-2 in the King of the Mountains. Goldstein wins it and Hofstede swept up the majority of the points on today's stage.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2021/Reports/PT/TONE/Stage%208/PCM0019.jpg

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2021/Micros/eav.png Wirtgen is actually an U25 rider so he obviously wins this one too. pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2021/Micros/pum.png Ganna will be one to watch as he looks to compete with our race winner in the future.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2021/Reports/PT/TONE/Stage%208/PCM0020.jpg

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2021/Micros/eav.png EA Vesuvio make it 3 classification wins out of 5 with a fairly comfortable gap in the Teams classification in the end. pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2021/Micros/gen.png Generali are 2nd while pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2021/Micros/pum.png Puma-SAP are 3rd.
