Welcome to the 3rd edition of the GP Lugano. Branded as a hilly classic it doesn't feature the most demanding parcour. At 188 km it doesn't stand out for its length and the harder climbs are all in the first half of the race. The easy finish therefore lends itself to a bigger group contesting the win. Which means sprinting ability becomes far more important.
With that said let's look at some of the favourites:
| FL | MO | HI | RS | SP | AC | Borges | 70 | 70 | 80 | 73 | 71 | 81 | Paulinho | 67 | 75 | 80 | 72 | 68 | 75 | Schreurs | 69 | 68 | 80 | 70 | 70 | 72 | Müller | 70 | 65 | 80 | 71 | 66 | 72 | Vogt | 73 | 62 | 80 | 71 | 62 | 63 | Edmondson | 70 | 69 | 79 | 72 | 70 | 76 | Slagter | 68 | 78 | 79 | 73 | 61 | 71 | Juul-Jensen | 73 | 70 | 78 | 74 | 66 | 79 | Boily | 67 | 76 | 78 | 72 | 68 | 74 | Quevedo | 69 | 71 | 78 | 72 | 65 | 75 | Palini | 69 | 70 | 78 | 68 | 68 | 74 | Gautier | 70 | 66 | 78 | 69 | 66 | 74 | Moazemi | 67 | 73 | 78 | 72 | 65 | 73 | Hugentobler | 70 | 68 | 78 | 69 | 56 | 76 | Budyak | 68 | 74 | 78 | 67 | 57 | 68 |
Let's first take a look at the puncheurs. Borges is the speediest puncheur here, his acceleration is next level and he can make use of that either in a sprint or earlier attack. Paulinho probably prefers an uphill finish so a slight surprise to see him here and not in Torino. Schreurs has lost some punch with his decline, but is still a 80 HI rider. As are Müller and Vogt who will both be happy that this race doesn't expose their low MO stat. Edmondson has a good sprint for a puncheur. Slagter has to try attacking from further out as he can't expect to compete in a sprint.
| FL | MO | HI | RS | SP | AC | Van Stayen | 75 | 63 | 78 | 69 | 83 | 76 | Kump | 73 | 65 | 76 | 72 | 80 | 79 | Van der Sande | 75 | 65 | 70 | 73 | 79 | 79 | Ackermann | 72 | 65 | 77 | 71 | 77 | 80 | Kreder | 73 | 64 | 75 | 71 | 77 | 78 | Kuboki | 73 | 65 | 73 | 74 | 77 | 77 | Redecker | 73 | 57 | 72 | 67 | 77 | 78 | Park | 72 | 61 | 72 | 70 | 75 | 76 | Jansen | 72 | 64 | 70 | 72 | 75 | 70 | Rumac | 71 | 72 | 75 | 70 | 74 | 76 |
Speaking of a sprint, these riders here can do that very well and might be the bigger favourites. Van Stayen and Kump are two of the poster boys for what we call "hilly sprinters". Expect both of them at the pointy end of the race. Can't forget about Ackermann he won this race last year and is the new generation of hilly sprinters. Others that could survive the hills and sprint to a good result are the likes of Van der Sande, Kreder, Jansen and the Kraftwerk duo. We'll see how some teams balance their resources between the puncheurs and sprinters.

Going to be super interesting to see how this race plays out. Very strung puncheur start list and if they cant decide it between them a potential MVS vs. Kumpi sprint.
Thanks for the preview!

Looks like it was too optimistic to send Amezawa here. Was tempted to split him and Kwiat for this race clash, hoping the final hill is steep and long enough to see him go aggressive and attack. Surely, Kump, MVS and Ackermann must be favourites.
Very excited to see this one play out. Looking forward to the race report, red! |

Nobody on the favourites list(s) for Los Pollos Hermanos, which is understandable. If the whole peloton stays together (in my wildest dreams), we have Maksimov. If not, Mutsumine might score a point by finishing in the top-25. Probably not of course, but a man can hope.
Thanks for the preview, red, also looking forward to reading the report!

Last year we sent our best puncheurs to what then was our "true" home race (with Centovalli being the main sponsor), but that didn't work out at all. This time, it's completely the other way round, as we have a full sprint train with Boudat being led out by Habtom and Stocker.
Which would obviously only work out in the wildest dreams, as there still are a couple of hills. So we have Lienhard as well - who unfortunately never works out, be it as a potential attacker, leader or dom. So any points scored here would be welcome...
Thanks for the preview!

Or just finish 94th without appearing anywhere, that´s also a possibility
Thanks for an entertaining report nonetheless, red. A shame for Borges he was so strong but feĺl back heavily, but nice ´save´ by Mcormick indeed.

6th place by Robov and he's the best rider out of the CT teams, beating the likes of Kump? I'll take it

Well done Van Stayen! Congratulations
Amezawa in 4th is a great result in such a finish. Thought we were going to leave with very little seeing it coming together, but then suddenly having him in front with Juul-Jensen was a nice surprise. And also seeing him on Juul-Jensen’s rear wheel, made me hopeful of a solid sprint. A 4th place is still better than I hoped for, and he held on for a long sprint out in the wind. Happy!
Thank you for the report |

Well, at least Lienhard was in the first group and scored some minor points. However, really disappointing that neither he nor Thièry who both are decent sprinters did anything in the end - especially seeing a couple of names who scored well...
Congrats to Carrefour, big one for the relegation fight!

Crazy race for us. Borges doing his thing 500m short of perfection. But if it wasn't for McCormick we would be in the gutter. Nice win by Van Stayen.
Thanks for another massive report red! Very entertaining!
