Tour of Northern Europe - Stage 4 Report

Stage 4 here sees a return of the cobbles for what could be a stage that really ruins the GC hopes of many riders. With so many riders still in contention, there is definitely an opportunity for someone to take control of this race here and now. The 192.4km stage is quite flat and seems peaceful for the first 80km but that's when the first of many cobblestone sections begins. It's then paradise for such specialists through the final 3rd of the race who will be looking to ensure this isn't a generic peloton sprint.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2021/Reports/PT/TONE/Stage%204/Stage%204%20Profile.png

Quite a few riders trying to get away early on. pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2021/Micros/hsk.png Gerts (+ 3'11) is a rider well suited to win this whole race but he's a long way down in the GC following the opening TTT. Great news for the riders today as it is absolutely pissing down which will only make the dreaded cobblestones more treacherous.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2021/Reports/PT/TONE/Stage%204/PCM0001.jpg

We're about 40km into the day's stage and pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2021/Micros/hsk.png Gerts is indeed able to get away. He has only pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2021/Micros/fes.png Agrotis (+ 3'21) for company. Their gap at the moment is only 2'18 and being managed carefully from the looks of it.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2021/Reports/PT/TONE/Stage%204/PCM0002.jpg

112km still to go today and our leading duo reach the first cobbled sector with a gap of 3'16. You'd imagine pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2021/Micros/hsk.png Gerts will ride away from his companion shortly due to the significant difference in ability.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2021/Reports/PT/TONE/Stage%204/PCM0003.jpg

Unlikely to have too much of an impact but pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2021/Micros/pum.png Cavagna suffered a puncture on this sector but he is back moving again and has time to move forward again before the next set of cobblestones.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2021/Reports/PT/TONE/Stage%204/PCM0004.jpg

Only 1 KOM sprint today and, unsurprisingly, pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2021/Micros/hsk.png Gerts takes maximum points.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2021/Reports/PT/TONE/Stage%204/PCM0005.jpg

80km to go and the sprinters battled it out for a single point at the first intermediate and pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2021/Micros/min.png Kalaba was victorious. This eradicates the gap to the leaders for the time being.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2021/Reports/PT/TONE/Stage%204/PCM0006.jpg

55km and the gap for the leading 2 is 1'48. Our focus is on the back of the Peloton though as the cobbled sectors are becoming more frequent and gaps are starting to appear.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2021/Reports/PT/TONE/Stage%204/PCM0007.jpg

48km and, again, it's only a single point but pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2021/Micros/map.png Bewley takes it. The 2 leaders barely ahead now.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2021/Reports/PT/TONE/Stage%204/PCM0008.jpg

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2021/Micros/hsk.png Gerts realises, as the gap is down to 1'17, that he has to set a pace which gives him a chance of holding him which comes with 35km to go. pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2021/Micros/fes.png Agrotis has put up a valiant effort but he should be swept up shortly.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2021/Reports/PT/TONE/Stage%204/PCM0009.jpg

This is the view from the back of the "Peloton". High winds and cobbles aren't a great combo so we are likely to soon see more apparent gaps. 31km still remaining and pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2021/Micros/hsk.png Gerts is the only one in-front of the Peloton with a gap of 1'07.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2021/Reports/PT/TONE/Stage%204/PCM0010.jpg

23km to go and the Peloton has been whittled down to 48 riders which includes the Yellow Jersey. Some big names caught out include:
pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2021/Micros/gen.png Menten (1st U25, 5th GC)
pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2021/Micros/evo.png Neilands
pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2021/Micros/mol.png Theuns
pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2021/Micros/tti.png Kamyshev and Senechal
pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2021/Micros/pol.png Baugnies
pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2021/Micros/aeg.png Van Hooydonck
pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2021/Micros/min.png Zepuntke
pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2021/Micros/mos.png Boros

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2021/Reports/PT/TONE/Stage%204/PCM0011.jpg

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2021/Micros/hsk.png Gerts is caught by the 45 man Peloton with 17.5km to the line and still 2 more cobbled sectors for someone to try their luck.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2021/Reports/PT/TONE/Stage%204/PCM0012.jpg

6km now remaining as the leading group starts the last cobblestone section. This is looking increasingly more likely to come down to a sprint and, funnily enough, many of the top sprinters are in this group.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2021/Reports/PT/TONE/Stage%204/PCM0013.jpg

2km now and it's pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2021/Micros/grm.png Laporte leading the group in support of Pedersen. pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2021/Micros/xr0.png Rowe, pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2021/Micros/map.png Bewley, pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2021/Micros/iso.png Scully, pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2021/Micros/kng.png Hsu and pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2021/Micros/isa.png Harrison follow in that order. pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2021/Micros/zpc.png Young, pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2021/Micros/pum.png Aregger and pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2021/Micros/fpc.png Kamberaj are also in this group but a bit further back.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2021/Reports/PT/TONE/Stage%204/PCM0014.jpg

It's not your conventional sprint but (Xero) Rowe doesn't let that bother him as he takes to the front having started his sprint with 1km to go.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2021/Reports/PT/TONE/Stage%204/PCM0015.jpg

It's looking at the moment as if it's going to be either pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2021/Micros/xr0.png Rowe or pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2021/Micros/map.png Bewley who have a decent gap with 500m to the line.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2021/Reports/PT/TONE/Stage%204/PCM0016.jpg

And indeed it is the Kiwi! pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2021/Micros/map.png Sam Bewley wins Stage 4 in a way that he has won many races over a highly decorated career.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2021/Reports/PT/TONE/Stage%204/PCM0017.jpg

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2021/Micros/xr0.png Rowe a clear 2nd but not as clear for pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2021/Micros/isa.png Harrison who just holds off pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2021/Micros/grm.png Pedersen for 3rd.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2021/Reports/PT/TONE/Stage%204/PCM0018.jpg

The pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2021/Micros/pum.png Puma duo of Cavagna and Ganna are 5th and 8th, pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2021/Micros/amc.png Summerhill intersects them in 7th while pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2021/Micros/gen.png Gaday is 6th and his team mates, Vermote and Oliveria, fill the Top 10.

* Missed Screenshot *

No real change in the GC as pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2021/Micros/gen.png Debesay simply takes the jersey off his team mate with his team still filling up the Top spots.
pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2021/Micros/map.png Bewley with a 19 point lead in the battle for Green.
Still a comfortable lead in the KOM for pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2021/Micros/hsk.png Goldstein.
pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2021/Micros/pum.png Ganna moves into White after pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2021/Micros/gen.png Menten had a bad day and dropped to 5th.
No change in the Teams where it's still pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2021/Micros/gen.png Generali with a small 6 second gap to pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2021/Micros/pum.png Team Puma - SAP.
