Yet another stage that could go to the breakaway, depending on how the teams in the peloton race. Some sprinters among the favourites, can they hold sprint for the win?
Campbell is the first attacker of the day, he’s going so fast he doesn’t even need a road. Green jersey Haller at the head of the peloton, seems like Kraftwerk doesn’t think a sprint is a possibility today.
A breakaway of fourteen reaches the first intermediate sprint with 155 km to go. We see five riders from Podium Ambition (Campbell, Lagane, Perez, Morales Ortega and Hennis), a trio from Strava (Azman, Hansen and Oelerich) and a duo from BNZ (Vuillermoz and Gillett). The four soloists are Herrera, Verwilst, Nieuwenhuis and Hacecky.
The first obstacle of the day is one of second category. Azman is stronger than Hacecky and the others, which puts the Strava rider in fourth with 26 KoM-points. Chaiyasombat will wear the jersey tomorrow as well. Campbell and Oelerich in trouble already, as the peloton led by Cedevita, Kraftwerk and Carrefour is 5’20” behind with 110 km to the finish line.
A bit further and just over halfway the stage the riders conquer Trappers Loop (3rd cat.). Hacecky and Perez too strong for the others, with the Pas Normal rider now at 26 KoM-points in fifth of the classification. The peloton, still led by the same teams, cross the top at 3’05” with 85 km to the finish line. Sprinter Mareczko dropped in the peloton.
The long flat section towards the penultimate obstacle of the day (Bountiful Bench, 3rd cat.) is not ideal for the breakaway, definitely not when teams like Eurosport and Carlsberg also decide to contribute to the chase. Their advantage over the peloton is 40” with 39 km left.
The breakaway is caught on the climb, but Vuillermoz and Herrera still decide to go for the points!
The BNZ rider is the strongest, a smart Chaiyasombat grabs the final two KoM-points. Colbrelli is having a hard time holding on, that’s another sprinter gone. Same for Vingerling.
Right before we head onto Bountiful Bench for the second and last time, we have an intermediate just after the finish line we’ll cross later. Bouglas takes ten points, Saber takes two. 20 km to the finish line and 3 km to the top!
800 metres to climb as Chamorro leads the race ahead of Moazemi,, Novak and Min. Will we see gaps?
They got a small gap, but Potocki closes it and brings the rest of the peloton back. Novak crosses the top in first. We’ll have to see what fast riders were able to hang on and whether they still have the energy to sprint for the win, 16.5 km to go!
Right after the top is when splits start to appear! There is a 30” gap behind the first 30-ish riders with 13 km left! The best sprinter in the leading group should be Pidcock, but Rumac and Lagane aren’t too far behind either! GC-wise all top-20 riders seem to be here, except for Garby!
As no one is setting the pace, some riders manage to come back to the front. Quevedo doesn’t want to let the opportunity slips and attacks in the downhill with 10 km to the finish line! Anyone willing to follow him?!
Eurosport and Sauber are chasing, but miss enthusiasm. 5 km left as it’s mostly downhill for the Carrefour rider, who has a 20” gap over a peloton of 50!
This is it indeed! Quevedo with a 50” gap under the red kite!
And he has all the time to celebrate! Great win for Carrefour! Now let’s watch the sprint for second!
Rumac (2nd) clearly the fastest ahead of Pidcock (3rd). Other riders scoring MGUCI points are Chhetri (4th), Moazemi (5th), KoM-leader Chaiyasombat (6th), Hansen (7th), and Bagioli (8th).
