Tour of America - Stage 11
Nemolito
pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2021/Reports/C1/TourofAmerica/pics/11am01.jpg

We’re halfway the Tour of America now, but for a lot of riders it only really begins today. On the way to the Snowbird Ski and Summer Resort the riders also have to conquer the road to Guardsmans Pass (1st category), which is not the easiest job in the world.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2021/Reports/C1/TourofAmerica/pics/11am02.jpg

KoM-leader pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2021/Micros/mck.png Chaiyasombat immediately attacked and brought six others with him. No Podium Ambition rider up front though, they’re trying to bring back the leading group.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2021/Reports/C1/TourofAmerica/pics/11am03.jpg

Et voila, they manage to get someone in the break. We have some familiar faces as well as strong climbers up front today: pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2021/Micros/mck.png Chaiyasombat, pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2021/Micros/sva.png Azman, pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2021/Micros/bns.png Vuillermoz, pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2021/Micros/car.png Bizkarra, pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2021/Micros/cdb.png Cannister, pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2021/Micros/mck.png Januskevicius, pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2021/Micros/trg.png Johannessen, pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2021/Micros/t3a.png Croes, pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2021/Micros/gla.png Haas, pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2021/Micros/vlf.png Herrera and pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2021/Micros/pns.png Hacecky.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2021/Reports/C1/TourofAmerica/pics/11am04.jpg

59 km to go, as the eleven leaders are currently in Park City, about to start the Guardsmans Pass climb of first category, with 12 km at 7%. The gap to the peloton, led by Lierse, Eurosport, Indosat and Duolingo, is currently three minutes. Maximum gap was 4’45”, but it has also been 2’10”. Will three minutes be enough?

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2021/Reports/C1/TourofAmerica/pics/11am05.jpg

Mostly weaker climbers now doing the work in the peloton, which is obviously beneficial for the breakaway. pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2021/Micros/cdb.png Cannister and pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2021/Micros/mck.png Januskevicius get dropped quickly, still 9 km to climb.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2021/Reports/C1/TourofAmerica/pics/11am06.jpg

We’re down to seven leaders already with still 8 km to the top, as pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2021/Micros/t3a.png Croes and pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2021/Micros/vlf.png Herrera are out. KoM-leader pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2021/Micros/mck.png Chaiyasombat also struggling to keep up with pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2021/Micros/pns.png Hacecky’s pace.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2021/Reports/C1/TourofAmerica/pics/11am07.jpg

5 km to climb as the road rises well above 16%. pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2021/Micros/sva.png Azman setting the pace now, and that seems to be the end for pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2021/Micros/trg.png Johannessen. A peloton of 97 around 3’20” of the race lead now.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2021/Reports/C1/TourofAmerica/pics/11am08.jpg

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2021/Micros/gla.png Haas has also been dropped, as none of the other four leaders is capable of following the Strava rider! 2.5 km to the top as he has 25” over the four chasers, and 3’30” over the peloton.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2021/Reports/C1/TourofAmerica/pics/11am09.jpg

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2021/Micros/sva.png Azman crosses the top with a minute over the four chasers, where KoM-leader pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2021/Micros/mck.png Chaiyasombat crosses the top in fourth. A peloton of 33 riders is at an additional 1’15”. pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2021/Micros/bns.png Ablenado, pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2021/Micros/kmm.png Costagli, pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2021/Micros/kmm.png Moazemi (7th GC) and yesterday’s stage winner pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2021/Micros/hlf.png Riesebeek (16th GC) unable to follow the pace in the peloton. pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2021/Micros/spr.png Anacona also not able to follow anymore, whereas concerning the white jersey only pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2021/Micros/ced.png Pogacar and Project: Africa’s Girdlestone currently able to follow pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2021/Micros/duo.png Min. Well over 20 km of descending now, before we start the final climb.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2021/Reports/C1/TourofAmerica/pics/11am10.jpg

Has the Strava rider overestimated himself? He gets caught by the four chasers, right before the end of the descent. The group of favourites of 33 is at 1’20”, with the following group of 18 at an additional 50”. They might get back to the favourites again, but it seems unlikely those riders suddenly manage to hold on the final HC climb.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2021/Reports/C1/TourofAmerica/pics/11am11.jpg

Although we’ve had several parts above seven % in the previous km’s, the climb officially starts with 12.1 km to the finish line. The average lies at 7.1%, as the peloton led by Indosat, Duolingo and Project: Africa is 1’20” behind the five leaders.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2021/Reports/C1/TourofAmerica/pics/11am12.jpg

Only one Lierse rider remaining in the group of 33, but it’s a big fish. Former stage winner pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2021/Micros/lpu.png Novak sees the gap growing a bit, and attacks with 11 km to the finish line!

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2021/Reports/C1/TourofAmerica/pics/11am13.jpg

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2021/Micros/duo.png Hiratsuka doing his domestique duties, catching the Slovenian with 10 km to go. The gap to the five leaders has been reduced to 50”.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2021/Reports/C1/TourofAmerica/pics/11am14.jpg

It’s a very steady climb, with the percentage until the finish line from here on (8 km to go), remaining around 7.9%. The 32 chasers are 37” behind the five leaders, it seems unlikely the breakaway wins the stage today.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2021/Reports/C1/TourofAmerica/pics/11am15.jpg

Unlikely, not impossible. pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2021/Micros/car.png Bizkarra still thinks he can do it, and attacks with 6 km to climb! The other breakaway riders seem to crack immediately, but in the group of favourites we see an attack by pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2021/Micros/duo.png Min, as pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2021/Micros/lpu.png Novak tries to follow him!

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2021/Reports/C1/TourofAmerica/pics/11am16.jpg

The Lierse riders takes over and immediately catches the final breakaway rider with pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2021/Micros/duo.png Min and pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2021/Micros/ino.png Warchol in his wheel! Still a group of +-27 riders behind them with 5.3 km to go, as domestique pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2021/Micros/kmm.png Koch is trying to close the gap now!

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2021/Reports/C1/TourofAmerica/pics/11am17.jpg

Great work by the German, as we’re back to a grupo compatto of 31 riders with 4.5 km to the finish line!

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2021/Reports/C1/TourofAmerica/pics/11am18.jpg

The Kraftwerk domestique and former breakaway rider pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2021/Micros/car.png Bizkarra setting the pace with 3.5 km left. Who is able to break open this race?

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2021/Reports/C1/TourofAmerica/pics/11am19.jpg

It’s Polish champion pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2021/Micros/ino.png Warchol with the attack now! pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2021/Micros/duo.png Min, pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2021/Micros/kmm.png Koch, pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2021/Micros/car.png Garby and pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2021/Micros/lpu.png Novak following easily with 2.5 km to climb!

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2021/Reports/C1/TourofAmerica/pics/11am20.jpg

The attack itself seems to be leading nowhere, but with 2 km to go nine riders are dropped, including the pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2021/Micros/cdb.png Carlsberg duo of Warbasse and Eg!

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2021/Reports/C1/TourofAmerica/pics/11am21.jpg

With 1.5 km to climb some more leaders are dropped! pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2021/Micros/gla.png Brandt and pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2021/Micros/trg.png Hoem losing time is understandable, but pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2021/Micros/spr.png Ranaweera is definitely not the victim we would have expected!

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2021/Reports/C1/TourofAmerica/pics/11am22.jpg

This acceleration seems to be the right one! pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2021/Micros/ino.png Warchol getting loose from pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2021/Micros/duo.png Min and pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2021/Micros/lpu.png Novak, as yellow jersey pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2021/Micros/kmm.png Nerz and second in GC pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2021/Micros/gcn.png Carapaz also don’t have an answer yet!

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2021/Reports/C1/TourofAmerica/pics/11am23.jpg

Half a km left, 25 seconds ahead, this seems to be it for pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2021/Micros/ino.png Warchol!

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2021/Reports/C1/TourofAmerica/pics/11am24.jpg

And he wins stage 11 of the Tour of America! Looks like he’ll come short for yellow, but he obviously will gain some places!

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2021/Reports/C1/TourofAmerica/pics/11am25.jpg

A strong finishing pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2021/Micros/hlf.png Potocki is second at 18”, with yellow jersey pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2021/Micros/kmm.png Nerz gaining some time on most of his rivals in third. pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2021/Micros/duo.png Min is fourth and has a small gap over pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2021/Micros/gcn.png Carapaz (5th), pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2021/Micros/afr.png Denifl (6th) and pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2021/Micros/lpu.png Novak (7th).

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2021/Reports/C1/TourofAmerica/pics/11am26.jpg

At 50” of winner Warchol we find pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2021/Micros/hlf.png Elissonde (8th), pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2021/Micros/voy.png Lunke (9th), pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2021/Micros/hlf.png Diaz (10th) and a strong pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2021/Micros/afr.png Girdlestone (11th). At an additional 15” we find pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2021/Micros/pns.png Aru (12th), pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2021/Micros/mck.png Kuss (13th), pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2021/Micros/kmm.png Koch (14th), pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2021/Micros/ced.png Gilanipoor (15th), pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2021/Micros/car.png Garby (16th), pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2021/Micros/car.png Chamorro (17th) and pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2021/Micros/afr.png Grmay (18th).

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2021/Reports/C1/TourofAmerica/pics/11am27.jpg

The disappointment of the day is pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2021/Micros/spr.png Ranaweera, finishing at 1’55” of winner pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2021/Micros/ino.png Warchol. pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2021/Micros/cdb.png Warbasse also disappoints and loses 2’30”.
