Is it just me, or does this stage scream ‘breakaway win’?
A breakaway of ten is quickly formed, with the teams looking to chase being Carrefour, Kraftwerk, Indosat, Lierse, Sauber, Carlsberg and Eurosport. The ten riders up front are Januskevicius, Muhindo, Johansen, Janse van Rensburg, Christian, Vuillermoz, Chaiyasombat, Croes, Riesebeek and Cruz. The best climber in theory is Vuillermoz, the best puncheur and best positioned rider should be Riesebeek (36th in GC at 4 minutes) and the only threat to KoM-jersey Zordan today is Chaiyasombat, who has 17 points. The Italian has 32, and there is a maximum of 26 points on offer today. They will soon start the climb to Guardsman Path, more than 27 km, well over 5%.
The mountain has a flat section in the middle. While the maximum gap was 4’20”, it has currently been reduced to 2’50”. No breakaway win after all. It doesn’t help that there are only two ‘domestiques’ in the leading group of course. So far, no sprinters have been dropped.
Less than 3 km to the top as Januskevicius hopes to lead his teammate Chaiyasombat to the polka-dots. The peloton still at 2’50”, as Insausti is the first and only on to be dropped there.
Christian would also like those 16 KoM-points at the top! He accelerates with 1 km to climb, Chaiyasombat immediately in his wheel!
And the McCormick youngster does what he needs to do! Nailbiting sprint, as he takes over the polka-dots from Zordan! The peloton crossing the top at 3’40” with 93 km to go. Now we dive into the valley, before heading onto the next and final climb of the day.
We’re at the second out of three intermediates with 57 km to the finish line, but nobody cares about the points. The leading group is down one rider, as Muhindo was unable to follow the pace. The peloton is only 1’30” behind, mainly thanks to Kraftwerk, Carrefour and Carlsberg.
The nine leaders start their final climb of the day. Around 11 km at 4%. The peloton still at 1’20”, but it’s been the same riders at the front all day, and they need someone to take over soon if they want to catch the nine ahead of them.
5 km to climb as Cruz is out and Januskevicius looks to be struggling as well. The peloton still around 1’10”, with sprinters Nelson, Colbrelli and Mareczko dropped.
Johansen and Janse van Rensburg also unable to follow the pace up front, leaving us with five leaders! Chaiyasombat accelerating with 1.4 km to climb, he wants more KoM-points! The peloton at 1’10” thanks to the pace from Quevedo.
Vuillermoz manages to beat the McCormick rider in the final downhill part, but the youngster still scores some nice points. The peloton of still 127 crosses the top at 1’45”. 27 km to the finish line now, most of it descending!
A little plateau section with 15 km to the finish line, as our five leaders still have 1’40” over the peloton. Carrefour trying to close the gap, but they don’t get a lot of help at the moment.
Seems like the peloton has given up, as the gap has grown to 2’15” with 10 km to go! The best sprinter among our five leaders should be Riesebeek, although the difference towards the others isn’t big at all. The Dutchmen looking to gain some GC positions as well.
The five up front are still cooperating, entering the final five km. Will it come to a sprint, or will someone attack soon?
Croes attacks, but Chaiyasombat and the others don’t let him go. 3 km left!
Vuillermoz also with an attempt as we are inside the final 1.5 km, but once again the McCormick rider doesn’t let anyone go.
So a sprint it is! Chaiyasombat can’t match the acceleration from Christian, who has Riesebeek in his wheel with 800 metres to go!
The Duolingo rider still in the lead with 400 metres to go, but here comes the Dutchmen!
They are right next to each other with only 200 metres to go, as Chaiyasombat still believes as well!
And it’s Riesebeek who brings home the win ahead of Christian (2nd) and KoM-leader Chaiyasombat (3rd)!
Croes (4th) clearly stronger than Vuillermoz (5th).
The other riders scoring points are Jiang (6th), Page (7th) and Main (8th).
