Balkans International
Once again the Balkans International will be decided on the final climb to Ligkiades. A climb which follows 225k of tough riding. With the top 10 all within a minute, big moves are possible. There are also plenty of KOM points for a rider to make a move in that competition.
Last year Boassen Hagen won from the break, perhaps Bakelants is planning similar raid as he has been dropping time throughout the race.
The stage favorites are the guys at the top of the GC.
The first KOM is just 5k into the race. Juodvalkis takes the points ahead of Koretzky and Schönberger. Squire also with them. Other riders trying to come across. Looks like Koretzky and not Bakelants will be the famous puncheur going for a breakaway win.
10k gone, Amaysim have had multiple riders in every break but none so far today so they are chasing.
20k gone, all the attackers have come together to form a 9-man break. But Amaysim still chasing and getting help from Mapei, the lead is 1’03. The additional breakaway riders are Van Niekerk, Nzeke, Dall'Oste, Kastrantas, and Gallopin
At the second Cat 4 the break just rolls through, they are more focused on establishing their advantage which is good news for KOM leader Sinkeldam who has decided to sit the break out today. Storer is trying to bridge across so Amaysim have stopped chasing. Mapei still working. The lead is 1’06.
By the third Cat 4, with 192k to go, Storer catches the group and goes straight to the front to take maximum points. He started the day on 29 points so he can do some damage today. Nzeke has been dropped while Mapei have stopped chasing as Fabbro and Quintana are trying to bridge across joined by Bayly. Further back Jensen, Jang, and Bouchard have attacked. Jensen started the day 2nd in the KOM.
The Mapei group with Nzeke have almost reached the front 9 as they start the longest climb of the day. It is a Cat 1, 11.1k at 5.2%. The Jensen group is at 1’07. They will need to join before the top if Jensen wants to make a run at the KOM lead. The peloton is another 2’26 behind.
8k to the top and Jensen groups makes contact bringing the break to 16 riders. Festina with 4 riders in the break now. The peloton at 3’51. Bouchard at 5’24 is closest on GC so the peloton can’t let this group get too out of hand.
1.3k to the top and Jensen makes his intentions clear. Squire and Quintana follow. The lead is down to 2’42, the peloton not letting the break go.
Jensen takes maximum points ahead of Squire. He now needs just 2 points to pass Sinkeldam. 175k to go, the peloton at 2’58.
150k to go for the peloton, all the GC teams contributing and the lead is 2’38. Both the peloton and the break are on the long valley road before the second set of KOM climbs which start with about 100k to go.
The lead holds steady through the valley and as the break starts the Cat 2 (7.0k at 5.6%) their lead is 2’44.
At the top Jensen comes by 3 Festina riders to takes maximum points to become the virtual KOM leader. Nzeke is dropped on the climb. Storer takes enough points to move into 3rd in the KOM n but he is a long way back in terms of points.
Jensen will be glad he grabbed those points as with 1.3k to the top of the next climb (a Cat 3) he is dropped. Nzeke has been caught by the peloton which trails the leading riders by 2’44.
Festina team-timetrial their way over the top of the climb. Juodvalkis also dropped. 80k to ride.
72k for the break, 1.7k to the next climb and all four Festina riders are gapped along with Gallopin and Schönberger. Van Niekerk was dropped and the others went back to help him. FarFetch and Popo doing the work in the peloton.
By the top there are 4 survivors, Squire, Fabbro, Bouchard, and Bayly. Quintana and Storer at 52 seconds, the Fetina group and Dall'Oste at 1’05. The peloton at 3’09. Gallopin and Schönberger are also in between, the other dropped riders have been caught.
55k for the four leaders. A chase group of 4 is at 1’01 which includes Van Niekerk, Koretzky, Quintana, and Storer. They almost reached the front of the race but didn’t quite make it and are now losing ground. There will be an inquest on the Festina team bus about how they frittered away their strong position. The peloton which is down to 40 riders is at 2’27. Most notable victims are Skujins (15th on GC) and Reichenbach (14th on GC). No major obstacles between here and the two finishing climbs.
40k for the peloton and forcing from Moser suddenly causes a split and the Yellow Jersey finds himself isolated. Kinoshita (6th on GC), Buchmann (17th), Teuns (13th), Aranburu (12th), Oomen (10th) Cort Nielsen (11th) also caught out.
Work from Turgis closes the gap, the break lead by 2’34, the Festina group almost caught.
20k to go. The four breakaway riders are starting the penultimate climb to Mazia, 7.3k at 5.3%. After that there is a descent and the finishing climb. They have 2’08 on a 47-rider chase group, the Festina group has been caught. The chasing in the peloton has been sporadic and the Skujins group is just 1’06 behind while Ponzi, who was also dropped, is attempting to bridge back up solo.
Almost immediately Bouchard and Bayly attack, Fabbro follows but Squire is dropped.
At about the same spot Padun attacks the peloton. Ponzi made it across, the Skujins group has not.
Beltran, Teuns, and Vasyliv latch on to the attack.
While Cerny is able to shut down the GC attacks, Fabbro launches his own attack up front. He has a 17 second gap.
Padun tries again, this time with Teuns, Beltran and Lutsenko.
This time Amezawa brings them back. Soon after Beltran and Formolo have a go but Amezawa doesn’t give them any rope.
At the top of the climb Fabbro has 1’07 over the other 3 who are together, and 2’28 over the GC chasers. He has 13k to go, about half on a descent and half uphill.
Formolo tries to attack again and can’t get a gap but then Lutsenko goes and Amezawa cracks.
Stüssi bring back Lutsenko and with 8.0k to go the chase group is back together. Up front Fabbro has started the climb. He has 32 seconds over Squire, who has dropped the other two. 1’04 over the next two and 1’42 over the chase group.
Under the 5k banner Fabbro still has 32 seconds on Squire while the chase group has dropped back a bit as the attacks ease off. This final climb is 5.6k at 6.7% with the steepest sections at the top.
Under 5k to go for the peloton and Padun attacks.
Padun’s attack brings back Bouchard, and Bayly and with 3.5k to go he and Formolo get a gap. They are only 16 seconds behind Squire so it doesn’t look for the remaining breakaway riders.
3km to go as Buchmann closes down the attack and catches Squire. Fabbro leads by 43 seconds. The chase group is still 28-riders strong with no significant additional riders dropped.
1.8k to go and Fabbro is caught. Still a 28-rider group but it looks on the verge of splitting. Lopez near the front now.
1k banner, still all together. The hybrids generally to the front.
600 meters and Lopez goes for it. Kwiatkowski and Beltran chase.
300 meters, Beltran closest to Lopez. At the back of the group Errazkin has been the first of the top of the contenders to be dropped.
100 meters and it is between these two.
It is very close but the home crowd are disappointed. Lopez get the stage and GC win. His two stage wins have come by a combined total of about 6 centimeters.
They get a 10 second gap moving Beltran into 2nd on the GC. Lopez also wins the points jersey.
Buchmann takes 3rd ahead of Kwiatkowski and Formolo.
Vasyliv, Ponzi, Lutsenko, Sagan, and Teuns complete the top 10. All of them finish on 18 seconds, some minor shuffling in the GC positions, Teuns the big winner moving from 13th to 9th.
Aranburu and Kinoshita lose 34 seconds and finish in 11th and 12th and the Voyagin rider drops 2 spots in GC. Errazkin loses 1’41 which drops him from 8th to 13th on GC but he stays close enough to Padun to win the Young Rider competition.
Jensen adds the KOM jersey to his stage win. UBS dominates the last stage and takes the team jersey.
